The Evolution of We Happy Few & Compulsion Games

1186 ratings | 27667 views
We Happy Few has changed dramatically, transformed almost completely from a simple open-world, indie survival sandbox into a fully-fledged story-based AAA game. Developer Compulsion Games has a publishing deal with Gearbox and has shaken hands with its new owner Microsoft over console exclusivity. Here’s who and why We Happy Few changed so much. The development of We Happy Few is actually an interesting story. The game is releasing soon so we thought you might be interested in hearing it. What are you hoping for from the game? let us know below - after you've appropriately groped the like button obviously...
Broken Games (5 days ago)
"The development of We Happy Few is actually an interesting story." for the sake of consumer/gamer, lets hope actual game story is interesting... or is just another AAA scam?

watch your back danny o'dwyer... PGG is coming for you
TheWtfnonamez (5 days ago)
I need to look into this more but tbh this looks a bit like the VR kickstarter scandal. Effectively the kickstarter backers invested in the project like an shareholders IPO. Then the company got bought out, people got rich, and the backers got a quick "thanks" and a big bag of fuck-all.

Just remember, gearbox made Battleborn...

The only reason I'm thinking about getting this game full price is because I think Compulsion Games will work on the next Fable game. I know their are rumours going around that Playground Games are working on the title but I don't think that they are. We Happy Few looks and feels similar to the Fable games so it would make more sense for them to make the next installment of the franchise instead of Playground Games imo.
Krazzy Singh (1 day ago)
if they take an open world indie game that already looks amazing and has thousands of fans and they change it into a limiting story based linear game with the asking price of any other AAA title are they really doing any good. No lie if they can make a good balance between the survival that will be released post launch and integrate the story in well enough and make it gta-esque like open world survival and story on the side , it will be amazing
Tara Michele (1 day ago)
As a original backer, I feel like they listened to a lot of what we asked for. Many of these features were brought up by people playing the beta often! More story makes me happy! I can’t wait to learn the dark side of Wellington wells

yeayyyyyyy!!!
SacredSecrecy (2 days ago)
I totally welcome all those changes this game has undergone. A unique and highly creative setting like that absolutely needs a decent lore, interesting characters and a well written story to back it all up. All these improvements give this game life and a solid purpose. The initial idea solely focused on survival wouldn't have been nearly enough to draw attention of the public, the gameplay would've become stale and repetitive pretty quickly and just gone under the mass market's radar, which would've been such a shame given the huge potential this IP has. So I'm really glad that the devs now have a publisher backing this project up and making it going AAA so that it can unfold its whole potential. I can't wait for the release. This game is going to be on my birthday wishlist same month :)
calv1nXh0bbes (2 days ago)
I was day one early access, and this game has evolved splendidly over all this time. I've definitely been excited to finally get to dig into the full story, to experience the new characters, and to see see where the final product lands. I feel like it has already attained a kind of cult status in its early access phase, and feel like that will only grow with release
Aryvandaar (2 days ago)
That dude on the left in the cumpulsion games interview is just staring. It's freaking me out.
TC Crowder (3 days ago)
I'm kinda excited for the game to finally get out of early access i bought it a while back and honestly this has the most potential out of the other former early access titles like conan exiles and ark
Mr. Drobot (3 days ago)
Did it start off as an Indie Game?🤪
Anthony Bentivegna (3 days ago)
I'm happy about this because i really did expect a crazy story based on the first trailer they showed so i was a bit disappointed when i found out what the game actually was
Zero .Karma (4 days ago)
I got the game in kick starter and am happy that it has evolved. I only spent a short time in the game due to it being repetitive and just another open world, procedurally generated survival game with no real depth. The thing that is making me sad is I live in Oz and our governments lack of understanding of things like context and nuance means that I will probably lose access to my copy and I will have to pirate the game.
Ergo Sumthing (4 days ago)
What... So the procedural world turns the game into a lootbox for whether or not you get to play certain sidequests? Fuck that shit, that sounds dumb. I was totally planning to get this on release, but I don't have time to replay the game more than once, nor am I going to pay full price to not be able to play the whole thing. I guess this'll be a discount buy next year. Shrug.
ninjaruss (4 days ago)
the don't starve survival/permadeath is what i liked the most about it though ;~;... will still be happy to get it though and i can't wait for the survival part to release
Andy GK (4 days ago)
i was quite happy with the idea of an indie game with a few hours of gameplay and id probably replay it a few times, then they go and make it a big deal, they dont even know if anyones gonna like it, they should have stuck with what it was, and then if it was good, build on it by doing a sequel
jz35 (4 days ago)
i forgot u guys were still about , i used to watch u all the time , up your game to beat the aussie brothers their my go to now
Joe-Francis Kiaga (4 days ago)
Why’d you guys repeat that a survival standalone mode was coming post launch twice?

Dont Starve 3D then.
Marc Rudgley (4 days ago)
Well I'll need to relocate to play as the nappy state that is Australia wishes to protect me from drug.. Just say no.. It worked from America in the 20's with prohibition.. oh wait.. no it didn't
Koffin Kat (4 days ago)
I own the game, won it a looong time ago in a giveaway and personally I'm quite pleased to hear that they are dumbing down the survival elements. I'm not a fan of that "always hungry, always thirsty, always tired" stuff, so if they switched the focus towards the story, it should be an interesting experience (for me, at least) :) I still disagree with what the devs did to get funds, though. You **either** ask for money on Kickstarter **or** you partner with a big company to fund you. You don't do both.
cikame (5 days ago)
I can't see them pulling it together, the reveal and the intro to the game really set up a hell of a storied experience, and like a brick it suddenly turns into a different game, an unpolished and tedious survival affair, that needs to go. The reactions of everyone playing the Early Access version were the same, lots of excitement at the beginning, and extreme deflation once they realised what the game actually was. The devs are capable of making the game people want, the intro is proof of that, but it will take an extraordinary amount of work to design an entirely new game.
gIfEnK22 (5 days ago)
I don’t like the new thumbnails and have found myself watching les since they were changed.
ArtMasterFrylock (5 days ago)
I haven't heard of this game for quite awhile. Interesting to hear how it turned out, but I really like survival games tbh. Shame it sorta changed that.

Same dev. time like Death Stranding. Olollol^^. They want 60 dollars for this pos?
Darko Illic (5 days ago)
A studio which is own now by Microsoft and has a game named "We happy few". Thats funny^^. For me: Another wannabe Bioshock without 1% of the BS class. The studio is piss poor. I dont know why MS bought it but well...marketing^^.
Kokoro Wish (5 days ago)
People were expecting a BioShock-like experience, but were disappointed to find it was a terrible survival game. They're now giving people what they were expecting.
MrPeterGoldman (5 days ago)
I played the Early Access. It was actually a very unique and refreshing game to play. Was definitely not worth anything over $15 at the time though so I'm skeptical about the $60 price. They'll need to add a lot.
The Boy Wonder (5 days ago)
This game was originally like 30$ now its up to 53 dollars after this "fully flesh" version im sure it will be 60 dollars never seen a game go backwards in price ussually game become cheaper over time

Please cover Guild Wars dev being fired over attacking polite fan.
Release the fucking game already.
softt (5 days ago)
When I saw the reveal trailer for We Happy Few I was so excited for it. Easily my number one pick for favorite game that year but I've lost all faith in them after what they released for people to play. They release a trailer full of story and character and then wonder why people are upset over a basic barebones survival game? Or wonder why people expected different? They basically wasted one of the best settings and aesthetic I've ever seen on a generic survival game. It's disappointing. So yeah, I don't care much for what they say it is now, my hype is completely dead and I really don't believe it'll change much from what we already got.
James R. (4 days ago)
I don't know why you expected there to be any story in the early access. I was always under the impression that was soley for testing gameplay.

S-clone (5 days ago)
You shouldn't have mentioned "No Mans Sky" mike! You jinxed it!!! I am looking forward to a proper Bioshock esque game as i miss it terribly but i'm still trying to wrap my head around how microsoft wanted this as a timed exclusive for Xbox but then it shows up on the PlayStation store. Now that i think about it why wasn't "We Happy Few" shown at E3?
Geeking Out (5 days ago)
i fucking hate gearbox this is why i am worried about the game. i bought the game on its early access release then when gearbox took over it worried me especially after aliens and duke nukem gearbox make the odd good game sure but they also fund a lot of utter shit. and now they have removed a bunch of the survival tactics like the new buff system its just lame and ruins the original intention of the game, i know they said the original mode will be "included" but how long will that take and is it going to be anything like the original intentions as mentioned before.
Ron Burgundy (5 days ago)
So this pretty hard game is turning into a cakewalk
ShinySilvery (5 days ago)
I have questions.... Do the original backers get anything from their investment? What were the dealings that allowed MS to wrest this away from Gearbox? Is this game still releasing on the multiple formats as promised? Or has MS canned those, having acquired Compulsion for its Xbox (and Windows 10) Console “exclusives” ?
CarimboHanky (5 days ago)
i have this game on my list... ill eventually buy it, when it goes on sale or something, i dont see myself paying $60 for this game.
puressenceuk35 (5 days ago)
Love the way almost everyone on this thread says it will be terrible, when no one has played the finished article yet, which will be nothing like the Beta. Get the feeling a large percentage of those people would be saying it looks awesome if Sony had bought Compulsion games. Judge it when it's out - if it's crap, fine, if not, who cares who owns the studio?
Geeking Out (5 days ago)
i would say the same if sony owned it i dont see how microsoft buying it has anything to do with peoples complaints in fact people are more pissed that gearbox is involved not microsoft
biglevian (5 days ago)
Sounds great. The setting and art style were great, the survival aspect was meh at best and I am no fan of permadeath if it's just game over.
Required Particular (5 days ago)
I prefer good story. Wish they didn’t need a AAA partnership to do that, but I guess with few people and lack of experience, they needed that....

GeniX_DK (5 days ago)
Gearbox no thanks.
Lord Kuraba (5 days ago)
I'm glad they've taken out many of the survival aspects of the game myself. When I first saw We Happy Few I was instantly excited for it but was then disappointed when I found out it was another survival game, a genre I don't like. I'll wait and see how the procedural generation affects the game though since I'm not a huge fan of that either. A good hand crafted world is always better imo.
Derek Marshall (5 days ago)
Just gotta say guys this is definitely one of if not the best video game news source. Keep up the hard work guys

TDC (5 days ago)
The world is handcrafted and has polished areas, those areas are just spread out randomly. It's not completely one-dimensional with its world design.
Randall Cromer (5 days ago)
I would like a movie to be made from this game.I think the story would be very interesting. I'm sure there would be a good chance that it would be worth watching given the storyline. I know I'm only dreaming but why not, the story is better then most stuff that's being told now a day's.
FBI Agent (4 days ago)
They announced a movie adaption of this game last year. Look it up and you’ll see articles about it.
Dean R. Abyss (5 days ago)
Hopefully it will still be the same amount of fun, the horror story is what attracts me to this. Reminds me that book, Brave New World.

Jesse Smiley (5 days ago)
Game is pretty trash, if I'm being honest. They took a brilliant concept and turned it into, basically, Dead Island with survival mechanics, which made the entire game so slow that it's not worth messing with. Literally everything sucks in the game except the writing. Considering Gearbox is publishing it, it's all downhill from here.
IrkMcSpamtroll (4 days ago)
And they are owned by M$. I have no hope for them.

same people seem to forget aliens colonial marines and fucking duke nukem forever lol

I'm not a backer, nor do I ever back any project. If this game is good, then I'll try it, otherwise I won't shed any tears.
Anti-Noob Crew (5 days ago)
I hope they get rid of the randomly generated stuff. I feel like that would weaken the game.
TDC (5 days ago)
Anti-Noob Crew I. The final version doesn't keep much of it. The landscapes are dynamic and every building has the polish and a purpose. Its just the random layout

except the original game isnt what people wanted. well at least i didnt. i think since its completely possible they should have a legacy edition that is jsut a survival game. but it presented it self as a story game and a lot of people seemed disappointed by the fact that it was just a survival game at the start.
saltboi666 end me (5 days ago)
So glad I bought early access it's probaly gonna update to the full game but the idea is brilliant it's story and the gameplay is good.
Christoph (5 days ago)
I’m unusually hyped for this game. A 1960s dystopian drug-fuelled Britain is just my cup of tea. Especially if it has a story paired with it. I don’t like survival games , so I’m happy they changed it. Thanks for the news PGG!
Hanniffy Dinn (5 days ago)
Christoph I kinda expected a full on story like bioshock, so this is great news. The retro British 60s just looked prefect for a game setting.

chocolate thunder (5 days ago)
Signed a deal with a devil to push out a poorly executed concept. No one wanted a procedurally generated babysitting sim, they wanted a bioshock-esque game with a unique and engaging story like it was originally kinda marketed to be. I got this game in early access but im going in with low expectations. The combat is sloppy and boring, the game is clunky, it runs like absolute crap (even on fairly strong hardware), the story seems kinda thrown together, and gearbox has already got their greedy paws on it with the season pass and other bullshit.
EvaUnit02 (3 days ago)
chocolate thunder Go back and watch the Kickstarter pitch video, it had ALWAYS intended to be a survival game. The perception that it'd be cinematic story-driven Bioshock-esque experience was one imagined up by dumb ass console gamers who saw the Xbox E3 2016 trailer.
chocolate thunder (4 days ago)
Balk X91 it's totally their fault for falling for deceptive marketing. It wasn't marketed as a survival sim. I don't even know how you can tell me otherwise
Balk X91 (4 days ago)
chocolate thunder Because a game has similar art style and atmosphere doesn't mean it's gonna be the same type of game like if people think that it's their fault for assuming and their spend their money because of their assumption.
chocolate thunder (5 days ago)
Thou Sand they put an emphasis on the art style and atmosphere. Like bioshock. And there's no way you expect me to believe they wouldn't think people would think that the experience was story driven and not survival driven.

MrRhysStocks, shareholders can't show love.
MrRhysStocks (4 days ago)
Jonathan Soko with love you are what would be called a cheap skate hahahaha. Personally if someone toils hours and hours to create art there is no price on that. 60 is fair imo for AAA games that have taken years of development, care, attention and love.
Jonathan Soko (4 days ago)
I will not pay more than 25-30$ for any game. I personally do not feel anything is worth more than that. This is a personal choice and belief. This also means i dont play many games, untill they go on sale. In my mind 60$ is insane for a game, especially in this age where DLC is out on day one quite often. I do not support that. Many people complain about it, yet continue supporting by buying. If you whine, then buy it, the dev wins and doesnt care that you whine'd about it.
Broken Games (5 days ago)
is not worth $60 or 60€.... WHF is a scam. like all AAA. I see they dumb it down. CONgratulation Compulsion Games, you deserve your sub-standard plaque.
Sideshow Bob (5 days ago)
Have they had time to write a good story...
TheStonedApe (5 days ago)
So what's this about console exclusive because I've already paid for this on Steam and I better be getting the full game.
Yaldabaoth (5 days ago)
To be honest, the more I hear about this, the less I am interested. Random layout? Random side-quests? So in the end, whether you have a good experience or a bad experience with the game is down to a random number generator. That's not game design, that's gamebling.
Brupcat (4 days ago)
You barely watched the video then! The game was completely randomized and now that it's less randomized, you're NOT getting excited? And repeating missions was not mentioned. Random side quests are a thing of the past now since the game is more linear and structured while the levels are still handcrafted, but sometimes the layouts are slightly different. Do you really want this to be spelled out for you?
Ergo Sumthing (4 days ago)
I was kind of hyped for this game until watching this video. I don't appreciate games wasting my time with forced replay or needless fluff. Love Metal Gear, but stopped playing V once they asked me to repeat missions. No fucking way. Watched the ending on Youtube, deleted that shit. Which was too bad because it was fun up til then. (I know WHY that happened, but still, I got no patience for that shit)
Ergo Sumthing (4 days ago)
Sam Heske: So lootbox sidequests, plus sidequests might double up between the different characters? This keeps getting worse and worse. I figured each character was a completely different experience, overlapping/repeating sidequests? really? Lootbox sidequests? What were they thinking?
Ergo Sumthing (4 days ago)
Lootbox sidequests, a horrible idea.
Brupcat (4 days ago)
Did you watch it? It isn't completely random layout, or random side quests.

I was one of those original backers and honesly I fell I got my money's worth with the early access. I am happy that it's going to be released with a full story mode. Yes it has evolved a lot to where it really is not the original game but as long as uncle Jack is around it will still feel the same. So happy day every one and rember to take your joy cause nobody likes a downer.
CyberClu (5 days ago)
I don't know how this game will fare. But I really did like Contrast. That was a fun and unique game.
asian love forever (5 days ago)
The game kind of has it opposite . Post WW2 banned hallucinagens because it was popular somewhat in the political protestors and users claimed it woke you up and made you think from different perspectives and question things more. If anything alcohol sports and hollywood is whats keeping people cooperating and being comfortably numb to political corruption. I know this game was probably inspired by brave new world and a psychedelic drug was chosen for the art design and to match the 60's era but still.
MrMazza4321 (5 days ago)

If the game has all the hallmarks of the EMERGENT GAME PLAY that was incorporated into BIOSHOCK 1/2. Then YES, I believe it will be a great game. If not, I'm sure it will be just as GENERIC as most other story driven AAA games of today!!!!!! But I'm sure it'll more interesting than your average Online MP title by far!
Tom Owen (5 days ago)
Just rattling some cages but saw you get mentioned on The Know, any future plans for collab with Roosterteeth?
Pretty Good Gaming (5 days ago)
Yeah, they mentioned us in a video on Cyberpunk recently. That was very cool of them.
KaiserAfini (5 days ago)
While the AAA standard fare they added for a while after signing the partnership was not cool, they did go back on it, And I feel this also gave them the resources they needed to be ambitious. The procedural generation lacked polish, now they are able to double down on storytelling, which was their main draw, hopefully they deliver.
AzureRathalos 97 (5 days ago)
I was so hyped from the announcement which oozed character whilst the Early Access videos were highly disappointing. It would be nice to have the story the game deserves

This game is going to be a huge flop
EvaUnit02 (3 days ago)
Idiotic Tirades The game launches in August, a month that's looking pretty dry for people who mostly only play AAA big publisher titles like most console gamers. If it gets good reviews I'd wager that it would sell decently from word of mouth.
Geeking Out (5 days ago)
people said the same about no mans sky and mighty no 9
Pretty Good Gaming (5 days ago)
I would stake a fair wager against that young Sir
Master Erakius (5 days ago)
Liked the idea when it first launched, and like the concept still. The only then that worries me is, Gearbox. Everything they touch, is just awful. So, still hopeful. But I am waiting for lots of reviews on this one first.
