The Evolution of We Happy Few & Compulsion Games

We Happy Few has changed dramatically, transformed almost completely from a simple open-world, indie survival sandbox into a fully-fledged story-based AAA game. Developer Compulsion Games has a publishing deal with Gearbox and has shaken hands with its new owner Microsoft over console exclusivity. Here’s who and why We Happy Few changed so much. The development of We Happy Few is actually an interesting story. The game is releasing soon so we thought you might be interested in hearing it. What are you hoping for from the game? let us know below - after you've appropriately groped the like button obviously...
Lorenzo Herreros (1 month ago)
the story is awesome and we aonly know abotu half of arthur story, so do not worry, the game wasnt even an AAA in the beginning.

"The development of We Happy Few is actually an interesting story." for the sake of consumer/gamer, lets hope actual game story is interesting... or is just another AAA scam?

Non creators don’t give a shit about indie titles because most are fucking hipsters.

Great vid! Just subscribed. I've been eyeballing this game for a couple of years but didn't really know what Early Access was, and all it entails. Really wish I would have jumped on the game when it was cheaper; I'm still debating the $60 price tag, but for the amount of work they put in, it seems like a fair price? I've never been interested in a survival game before so it would be my first. Thanks for this video explaining it only adds to my interest and the lore. 👍👍

I ended up paying $80 pretty much for the deluxe edition which includes the season pass for all future DLC and a unquie wepon , only a few days to realease I have high hopes for this game
BewilderedToad (1 month ago)
Did these changes happen before or after the demo was released? Because the engine I played in the Xbox One demo did not scream “$60 game” to me.
DangerousNub (1 month ago)
I wanted to buy the game until I found out that the price was increased to $60! Yay!👍☺️👏
Destructus 86 (1 month ago)
Sooo glad they changed. Sounds great now
Marine Corps Infantry (1 month ago)
The game is $60 but you get $10 off if you preorder it so $50 Isn’t bad. The deluxe is $70 if you preorder. Plus you can put some money down so it even less when you buy it on release(;

Thank god I hated the preview version but enjoyed the world and story

When a game is PROCEDURALLY GENERATED.. Does that mean you MUST have an internet connection to play it? Am i correct in assuming that or is the "procedure" contained in the disc? The whole procedural thing confuses me..(never played one)
Carum Sarene (1 month ago)
So it's like the old Rush Hour game. Different set up of pieces and how you move them around for the solve, but in the end you're still accomplishing the same goal, getting the one special piece out. I love the idea of a story focused game with survival elements. It means you don't have to actually worry about grinding or farming (even though I love to) or even leveling. Basically all enemies are the same, you're not going to get wiped out because you aren't the right level and you're never going to be stuck in the same place for eons. At the same time, the debuffing gives you the opportunity to explore and to discover areas. Who knows, if you're struggling to find the next story quest maybe going hungry will lead you right to it.

Devs: Here have a slice of pie. Me: Oh this is a delicious pie i would like a whole pie please, here is my money. Devs: Ok i know you said you wanted a pie but we made you this cake! That costs twice as much. Me: but i wanted pie. D: Devs: You'll like this cake much more it has all these layers and is so delicious. Me: No i'm not paying for a cake i wanted a god damn pie.
RossenX (1 month ago)
I find it so ironic that a game that's about not following conformity and corporations, did so themselves and dramatically changed their entire view on games and the game itself. Just keep taking them pills Devs, you'll be eating rats when this game comes out, since the original hype for it was for a totally different product than the one you are selling now.
Quinten McLaughlin (1 month ago)
I'd rather buy a single player story than a survival game. So many opportunities of world building and narrative... All gone.

id of paid for this game on kickstarter but am i going to play there AAA asking price and make the publisher money whilst the people who really brought this game to live the patrons get dicked no sorry ill get this game when its on sale or if its on console ill grab it out a bargain bin
Sarge (1 month ago)
this points out what i hate about kickstarter everyone bands together and funds a game they want a game AAA publishers couldnt give 2 shits about we just get a copy of the game (totally fine if thats all that happens) but t hen a AA publisher catches wind of the game they pay money and get proffits off the game and we get fucked
Chase H. (1 month ago)
I really wanted this game to just be a linear story type game like half-life or bioshock. The world is so cool but the survival part makes it uninteresting to me

I haven’t really been following the development, but... I’m kinda proud of how it’s come along I mean, it started off as a simple indie game, funded by Kickstarter And now they’re working with a Triple A company, and have been able to legalize it in Australia We Happy Few, has definitely come a long way
Waxweazle NL (1 month ago)
From nice indy idea to cash grabber, nah not my game...
KokahZ777 (1 month ago)
glad the game took this direction. It's biggest strength was its universe. It's not because a game is randomly generated and have no goal that it has infinite lifespan, in fact it's quite the opposite because these games tend to be boring very quickly.
FrostWarp (1 month ago)
I really REALLY hope the story is good.

I may get this because I'm curious about the alternate history they're building for the WHF world, but I'll wait until it's on sale ($60 is a bit high of an ask for this, imho).
Stone S (1 month ago)
I won't pay $60 for this garbage. Most games that come out now are half a game. And then they expect you to Fork over all this money for the DLC. It's going to come to a point where people are going to realize there's a whole world out there and they're going to say Fuck games.

Not being rude or anything but why do you guys have to be dicks about this game sm like it’s still survival just with other forms, it still has only 40 people Making the game but gearbox is publishing it, I don’t see why that’s so wrong it’s becoming triple a and I’m happy by that because I love this game and have played it since day 1

Rayman1701 (2 months ago)
Another kickstarter getting carried away again & moving the goalposts. Build the best and most complete game you can afford to do so based on pledges you made and the backing you got. If you got way more than you needed, either ask backers what else they would like, or use it to make an expansion after you've released the main game.
Rayman1701 (1 month ago)
You're definitely more amusing for having a totally pointless reply.

dsb1763 (2 months ago)
No Happy Ending here. Compulsion Games sold their soul to Gearbox and Microsoft and now we will end up with an over hyped, over priced pile of you know what. Although not the self inflicted death like No Man Sky, but worth of comparison no the less.
john bennit (2 months ago)
People saying its not worth 60 dollars but i spent 80 dollars on the deluxe edition. Lol

GodTvRadio (1 month ago)
Just remember, Gearbox is only publishing the game, it's made by compulsion. :)
Jake Brooks (2 months ago)
The only reason I'm thinking about getting this game full price is because I think Compulsion Games will work on the next Fable game. I know their are rumours going around that Playground Games are working on the title but I don't think that they are. We Happy Few looks and feels similar to the Fable games so it would make more sense for them to make the next installment of the franchise instead of Playground Games imo.
Krazzy Singh (2 months ago)
if they take an open world indie game that already looks amazing and has thousands of fans and they change it into a limiting story based linear game with the asking price of any other AAA title are they really doing any good. No lie if they can make a good balance between the survival that will be released post launch and integrate the story in well enough and make it gta-esque like open world survival and story on the side , it will be amazing
Tara Michele (2 months ago)
As a original backer, I feel like they listened to a lot of what we asked for. Many of these features were brought up by people playing the beta often! More story makes me happy! I can’t wait to learn the dark side of Wellington wells

SacredSecrecy (2 months ago)
I totally welcome all those changes this game has undergone. A unique and highly creative setting like that absolutely needs a decent lore, interesting characters and a well written story to back it all up. All these improvements give this game life and a solid purpose. The initial idea solely focused on survival wouldn't have been nearly enough to draw attention of the public, the gameplay would've become stale and repetitive pretty quickly and just gone under the mass market's radar, which would've been such a shame given the huge potential this IP has. So I'm really glad that the devs now have a publisher backing this project up and making it going AAA so that it can unfold its whole potential. I can't wait for the release. This game is going to be on my birthday wishlist same month :)
calv1nXh0bbes (2 months ago)
I was day one early access, and this game has evolved splendidly over all this time. I've definitely been excited to finally get to dig into the full story, to experience the new characters, and to see see where the final product lands. I feel like it has already attained a kind of cult status in its early access phase, and feel like that will only grow with release

I'm kinda excited for the game to finally get out of early access i bought it a while back and honestly this has the most potential out of the other former early access titles like conan exiles and ark
Mr. Drobot (2 months ago)
Did it start off as an Indie Game?🤪
Anthony Bentivegna (2 months ago)
I'm happy about this because i really did expect a crazy story based on the first trailer they showed so i was a bit disappointed when i found out what the game actually was
Zero .Karma (2 months ago)
I got the game in kick starter and am happy that it has evolved. I only spent a short time in the game due to it being repetitive and just another open world, procedurally generated survival game with no real depth. The thing that is making me sad is I live in Oz and our governments lack of understanding of things like context and nuance means that I will probably lose access to my copy and I will have to pirate the game.
Ergo Sumthing (2 months ago)
What... So the procedural world turns the game into a lootbox for whether or not you get to play certain sidequests? Fuck that shit, that sounds dumb. I was totally planning to get this on release, but I don't have time to replay the game more than once, nor am I going to pay full price to not be able to play the whole thing. I guess this'll be a discount buy next year. Shrug.
ninjaruss (2 months ago)
the don't starve survival/permadeath is what i liked the most about it though ;~;... will still be happy to get it though and i can't wait for the survival part to release
Andy GK (2 months ago)
i was quite happy with the idea of an indie game with a few hours of gameplay and id probably replay it a few times, then they go and make it a big deal, they dont even know if anyones gonna like it, they should have stuck with what it was, and then if it was good, build on it by doing a sequel
jz35 (2 months ago)

Koffin Kat (2 months ago)
I own the game, won it a looong time ago in a giveaway and personally I'm quite pleased to hear that they are dumbing down the survival elements. I'm not a fan of that "always hungry, always thirsty, always tired" stuff, so if they switched the focus towards the story, it should be an interesting experience (for me, at least) :) I still disagree with what the devs did to get funds, though. You **either** ask for money on Kickstarter **or** you partner with a big company to fund you. You don't do both.
GodTvRadio (1 month ago)
Koffin Kat The funding basicly got them noticed showing that people wanted this game and that they were competent enough to deliver it. All the money is going towards the game to deliver the epic story everyone is looking for.
Lord Alkair (1 month ago)
Well think about it like this: They needed the original backing from Kickstarter to get their project off the ground, and once they attained enough to show how strongly the audience supported this game, they could move on to getting more funding and assistance from a large-scale producer to make a full, complete product.
cikame (2 months ago)
I can't see them pulling it together, the reveal and the intro to the game really set up a hell of a storied experience, and like a brick it suddenly turns into a different game, an unpolished and tedious survival affair, that needs to go. The reactions of everyone playing the Early Access version were the same, lots of excitement at the beginning, and extreme deflation once they realised what the game actually was. The devs are capable of making the game people want, the intro is proof of that, but it will take an extraordinary amount of work to design an entirely new game.

A studio which is own now by Microsoft and has a game named "We happy few". Thats funny^^. For me: Another wannabe Bioshock without 1% of the BS class. The studio is piss poor. I dont know why MS bought it but well...marketing^^.
Kokoro Wish (2 months ago)
People were expecting a BioShock-like experience, but were disappointed to find it was a terrible survival game. They're now giving people what they were expecting.
MrPeterGoldman (2 months ago)
I played the Early Access. It was actually a very unique and refreshing game to play. Was definitely not worth anything over $15 at the time though so I'm skeptical about the $60 price. They'll need to add a lot.
Lord Alkair (1 month ago)
Trust me man, the game is much better now. Early Access had a lot of bugs, a lot of issues with it, but now that they're fixing everything up, it's going to be much much better.

When I saw the reveal trailer for We Happy Few I was so excited for it. Easily my number one pick for favorite game that year but I've lost all faith in them after what they released for people to play. They release a trailer full of story and character and then wonder why people are upset over a basic barebones survival game? Or wonder why people expected different? They basically wasted one of the best settings and aesthetic I've ever seen on a generic survival game. It's disappointing. So yeah, I don't care much for what they say it is now, my hype is completely dead and I really don't believe it'll change much from what we already got.

Now that i think about it why wasn't "We Happy Few" shown at E3?
Geeking Out (2 months ago)
i fucking hate gearbox this is why i am worried about the game. i bought the game on its early access release then when gearbox took over it worried me especially after aliens and duke nukem gearbox make the odd good game sure but they also fund a lot of utter shit. and now they have removed a bunch of the survival tactics like the new buff system its just lame and ruins the original intention of the game, i know they said the original mode will be "included" but how long will that take and is it going to be anything like the original intentions as mentioned before.
