PUBG’s loot boxes look a lot like gambling

PlayerUnknown’s Battleground’s loot boxes look a lot like gambling. Developers PUBG Corps have revealed the odds of actually winning the things you want inside the game’s Biker and Desperado loot boxes and they’re terrible. So terrible, it would take 80 years on average to unlock the rarest items. What the hell is going on here? Let’s try and figure it out. The frame rates on this gameplay are nauseating as fuck. What are you playing on? Everything?
Xazur (9 months ago)
What if they put the limit of 6 lootboxes per week as an attempt to get more people to buy PUBG on alt accounts?
_Unknown13_ (9 months ago)
In the end, all you need to do is insta-sell those crates instead of opening them. Sheesh!!!

I got a crate that requires a key to open and it needs to be paid for ($2.50)... Even though I have already earned the crate with BP. WTF....?

Yeah glad I never bought PUBG this along with the cheats no thank you.

I have a friend who is addicted to this clash royale game, we work at the same place and you know what he did with his first pay check? Spent 200 dollars on f*cking ingame currency. I spent 200 paying bills. This sh*t is bad and its getting people addictive. New laws should be set for these loot box system to control this crap, the least I want is my daughter to fall addictive to this type of shite.

Good. More stuff for the masses to lose more money on. They've already practically ruined aaa gaming by allowing loot boxes to infect it. Let them have their little loot boxes. They deserve them.
Lemwhip (10 months ago)
This doesn't exist on the xbox version you cannot purchase loot boxes or in game currency. I think they should keep it this way. Does anyone think they should be able to?
Martin Game (10 months ago)
You can say the same about CS:GO, you can cash out your cosmetics. I have mates who've gotten loots boxes, just to sell the items inside to spend that cash on other games and DLC, some sitting there hoping for those $120 gloves and knives to pop up.
miguel ramirez (10 months ago)
So far its just cosmetics. And you only get to use points that you get from playing to unlock random stuff that u can exchange for chump change or change your look
David (10 months ago)
Are you guys this starved to make a vdo. First the skins having valou does not give them money. Second pubg is not a game for completing. So why would any one need to get all the skins. And to all the ppl that don't play pubg you have now grown to comment when you have no first hand experience with the game. The valou of skins it what the player puts on it. Not one force a valou on it. Look out yourself you are the one setting the price or worth of a skin

microtransactions, loot boxes, multyplayer, any game with any of those things just make me run as far as I can in the other direction. But the rest of gamers are just stupid, putting money into the games blindly.

It's a cosmetic item Why the fuck does anyone care???
CMDR Cmdr (10 months ago)
PUBG is broke as a joke and they spend their time making pretty outfits? The game should be back in early access while they try to get it working properly and program battle eye to function as intended. Between early game lag and frame drops, and just way too many hackers (which is probably due to the loot incentive), this game is a rage quit waiting to happen
Big Boss (10 months ago)
at least it's not star cards

So another reason not to support online multiplayer game....
DigitalVanquish (10 months ago)
I was tempted to buy the game but if the company behind it is like this, I'm not going to support them.

Whats the problem if its just items of clothing?? I have a black tank top, a baseball cap and a pair of brown combats and I literally couldnt care less about having anything different. Although saying that I wouldnt want people to be able to buy a ghillie suit as that would be a game changer, anything bought would need to have no effect on the persons ability to hide like a little turd.

Thing is people act like you need these things. try looking at it as you're just lucky if you get it. Lower your expectations and you won't feel disappointed when you (probably) don't get it. But if you do you will feel pleasantly surprised.

Pubg has never been a great game. Battle royale games have always existed, I don’t know how this game has blown up this much.

The legal definition of gambling is usually related to what is taxable. It's not quite what the common sense definition is.

#Prettygoodgaming what ever happened to just buying the skin you wanted I didn't mind that. I do not enjoy buying a box with no idea what your getting I don't go into fucking Tesco and go round buying random shit with my eyes closed hoping I get the toilet paper I so desperately need !

Yep gaming is dead, mostly, well for those of us who remember the era of the 90's anyways. And they are going to get away with it aswell. I made a moral stance last year that nomatter how good a game is i will neither buy nor play if it has lootboxes in it. Sadly though theres an intire score of people just a few year younger than me that find these tings acceptable because "thats just how it is". Then again i prob. have a backlog of about 80 years of high quality games i havent played yet.

definitely gambling i got a desperado crate and opened it for 3cad$ and in the steam market the item i got is valued at 23$ and going up... now that we know that this is gambling, what can we do about it?

i remember way back when when we didn't have to use real cash to buy our super over priced, completely worthless hats. we had the earn the millions in game and it would actually show how much effort we put into it. just another example of how runescape did it better.
Joshua Tamayo (10 months ago)
The problem with battlefront wasn’t the fact it was gambling, people were freaking out because it was pay2win. Yes the PUBG crates is a problem tho. I’m on Xbox and you can’t trade on there so I don’t really mind, they have no effect. However it absolutely looks like gambling-ish on PC.
Yorkshireborn (10 months ago)
have you done a video on ESO (elder scrolls online) and their crown crates. these are blatant gambling, From what i can work out each crown crate cost around 400 crowns which is roughly about 5 USD of course the crowns are cheaper the more you buy, 3000 crowns will cost about 25USD while 21000 (which they say is their best deal) will cost you 125 USD. The rub here is that things in the crates, while they are only cosmetic, can only be owned by gambling with them and never bought in the crown store, which by the sound of it is having people throw down 200 USD just to get a certain mount. ESO is pay to play and not free to play.. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_HZF7MmqcSk

Holy fucking shit... That's fucking insane! So paying $30 for a broken game, isn't enough? They need $1900 for a fucking hooded coat, that I can't even wear if I got cold? I wouldn't spend $190 on a real hoodie. I spent $49 on a Kryptek hoodie for xmas and very happy. Pubg, fuck yourself with a cactus

Do all the idiots in the comment section not realize that Pokemon cards use the same exact practices?? You can sell Pokemon cards **shocker!!** I made $100 selling a rare Pokemon card... journalists were never up in arms about that! they are making up causes and crying wolf in order to have clickbait content. Pretty Good Gaming just wants to have their audiences feel involved in some sort of “cause” so they keep coming back... its so sillyXD
Adeptus Astartes (10 months ago)
Did some fun math; £1562.50 per individual who buys keys + the limit too using said crates per week equals to roughly £4,687,500,000 if every single said concurrent player (3 million) spends exactly that amount over 5 years for the crates to get the biker jacket and such and all of that is assuming that people stick too buying 6 keys a week for 5 years. Which they wont so that number is actually lower than what they will probably make over the next 5 years with this model unless the player base gets smaller or they backtrack. This is why the drop rates are so low and this is why they are doing this, they want to make that kind of money from this. They know exactly what they are doing and its fucking disgusting. The industry never learns, especially with the stupid crap with EA recently. Hold blueholes feet too the fire please. They need a reality check.

This reminds me of h1z1 I got a rare skin in that game and managed to sell it for 540 dollars bought a dx racer chair, gamer chic. But you have to buy those crates and I think its def gambling.

Nothing will happen to them because it's pubg and they've already established themselves, just like overwatch
Andrei Neda (10 months ago)
while they can't cash in directly on the whales, the whales can still chose to spend their money on their marketplace of which they get a cut, so they're still cashing in indirectly.
Andrea Woodvine (10 months ago)
Does this mean, on the plus side, they promise to keep the servers running for 80 years?
Randios187 (10 months ago)
So, I'm not defending PUBG on this one, but I genuinely do have some questions. 1) They use the phrase "you can instantly cash out several hundred dollars". Just to clarify, is there a way to cash money out of the steam market place? I thought it has to stay in Steam. 2) With the dismal odds displayed clearly, are there really people who think its worth it to buy the crates for that low of a chance to get something worth selling back? You're better off actually gambling at a casino (I live in Las Vegas, so I feel pretty confident about that). 3) Do any of you actually buy the crates in the hopes of getting the items to use? If so, why? Legitimately curious here: is it the rarity/prestige of the item, or do you actually think it looks that much better than the standard outfit? To me all of the items look pretty generic/standard, so I just sell off any lootboxes I get through playing (which has paid for PUBG itself and bought a couple extra games for me when they were $7 a pop)
InFiddle _ (10 months ago)
THIS... THIS RIGHT HERE!.. This shows so perfectly the additude of game makers and publishers today... They don't give a fuck about the player... They just want all the money.. ALL OF IT!.. Not some but all... I mean there's this big uproar over this kind of bullshit right this very moment.. And these cunts literally put an actual gambling system in the game... What in the actual fuck man....
Oldschool Gamer (10 months ago)
Not to defend lootboxes/gambling, but i play a game that recently added skins in game that are tradable on the steam market. However, within days most of them were on sales by the hundreds/thousands at a whopping price of 3 cents, which is the minimum price. (and Steam takes 2 of those cents) Its been a few months now, and the economy has pretty much flatlined, there was more supply then demand, and not just a little. While PUBG takes it a bit far, it is creating a healthy amount of demand, with a supply that, while not great, works. Some things need to be rare, while maybe not this rare, it is at least getting the concept right, I hope the do tweak the numbers a little bit though.
Demian1233 (10 months ago)
I think the real issue is stream market place, these issues look similar to CSgo or even dota 2. Also, yes you can list on the steam market stuff for w/e price, but you should also check if there have been sales of the item and at what price.

Limiting the crates will push those whales onto the item store, that's all.
EmptyNone (10 months ago)
Yes they are. Cosmetics or pay to win, they are both wrong. Pay to win is something that shouldn't exist and comestics are part of the grind, the most exciting part of it. You want your character to look badass and have badass things. It pisses me off to see games getting popular and developers taking this chance to rape more money out of our wallets. I never bothered with this game because its extremely poor optimized and this survival type is just boring.
Alex B (10 months ago)

Mtndewgang (10 months ago)
I don't mind the cool down, but buying a key for your reward is completely ridiculous.
pizza 4breakfast (10 months ago)
I see the limit as a good thing, it would get rid of the want to spend $100 in one week just to get that skin/item you want
Sosa B (10 months ago)
Why are you using $ and not £, isn't this the a British channel ?
Joseph Flannery (10 months ago)
Try playing WOW and grinding for a mount that has a .1% chance drop and you can only do it once a week. This isn't bad.
FUSZION (10 months ago)
I personally don't like loot boxes in my games nor do I buy them EVER! But I do have a hard time attacking loot boxes like this without also attacking card booster packs for games like Magic and Pokemon. What you get in a booster pack is random, and the cards have a monetary value, and sometimes you might strike it rich with a card that is worth $10,000, $20,000 or $50,000. There is a sense of gambling when it come to trading card games that are geared and marketed to children and people with gambling addiction. If you attack this practice, in this game, Battlefront 2, or any video game, then you need to attack all RNG's period within video games and out. I repeat, I don't like RNG's and loot boxes, and I'm not trying to defend them. But I am having trouble being philosophically consistent on the subject since I cant objectively see much of a difference.
JerBearTeo (10 months ago)
I'm ok with it if its just RNG for cosmetic items. A bit more iffy when you can sell them for monetary value. I'm not sure if you can cash out Steam Wallet money, I'm under the impression you can only buy other products on Steam with it. Doesn't make it better though especially with the dev and Steam probably bringing in a decent % with every transaction.
MatthewOmerza (10 months ago)
So 1 in 10,000 chance and you can only open 6 a week. Oh my god that’s fucked.
Doctor Bram (10 months ago)
If you fucking geeks left your parents house for five minutes and went down the bookies, you'd notice loot boxes are not gambling. You virgin bitches know nothing of the real world outside your bedrooms. If lootboxes are gambling then so are football stickers. There is no stake, no loss, you're always guarented an item, no matter how shit they are, therefore lootboxes are not gambling. You'd all know this if you ever fucking went outside. Stop insulting ppl who suffer from actual gambling addictions. Stop being retarded. Stop calling lootboxes gambling, when they so obviously aren't gambling. And most of all, go fucking outside and experience life instead making idiots of yourselves on youtube talking about things you so clearly know nothing about.
SH18 (10 months ago)
Well in this case here, the gambling is limited, you still limited to opening 6 crates per week, so it's not like the guy can drop a ton of money on 10 to 1000 crates and then instantly resell off everything, so here it's more like buying a lottery ticket but the devs limit how much gambling you can do per week which imo is a good thing, another good thing is that this is all purely cosmetic and does not give you an advantage against other players where as in other EA games the more loot you buy the stronger you become and can become stronger than others who have spent tons of more time. We can also look at CS:GO and those people sell cosmetic weapons etc yet nobody brings that up, so I think pubg and cs:go loot box system is similar, so it's up to the governments to define if these types of loot boxes and online reselling marketplaces are gambling.
ShuTDowN (10 months ago)
Why would you be mad becouse someone is willing to spend hundereds of dolars just to get a few pixels on the screen ? If they want to then let them be. Actually I'm ******** happy Lol... you buy PUBG for 30€ and then you can farm and sell these crates and get a free $ for your other games you want to buy.

I remember when GoW3 had crazy gun skins that you could buy outright. I prefer that system. If I want something: I buy it. I'm not going to invest in any gambling system. Companies would have better success if they stuck to that model. Unless they'd appreciate it if there's laws which gambled their earnings. How about that? 0.004% and you can keep everything or you have to give back refunds to the consumer? It's not legally gambling because they can't "cash out."

Did they not learn anything from DIABLO 3 auction house with REAL friggin money!?
chomerly (10 months ago)
Of course they (Bluehole) will get away with it. Why? Because like many other games, especially franchises, that have come before it, people will continue to buy PUBG. Some will justify it by saying "It's only cosmetic." Others will say "It supports the developers." And more will say "I don't buy micro-transactions so it doesn't effect me." In any case, only the game buying public can affect the change needed in the gaming industry. But as long as there are people who continue to support any developer or publisher, regardless of what they do, then nothing will ever change.

Why dont u even mention CsGo once?!? Isnt IT there even worse? Crates only by buying Keys, all the gamble sites to get Skins etc. AS a completionists U are much more fked in CsGo than in Pubg because U have to pay. Feels Like noone ist talking bout that because crates are in CsGo for a long long time. In for honor Things u would get out of boxes had direct influence on gameplay, so not only cosmetic

+P.G.G Yea...new heights of stupidity, IF and only if they did this without knowing how people would interpret it. How ever if they did it full knowing then they are ""gambling"" on the chance that the controversy isn't big enough to make this a "net loss". What I don't understand is why they have implemented a market where people can "cash out" ((is there really an "official way" to sell in-game assets" for "real cash" ??)) If they just took this out then they could argue that this isn't "real gambling" like "every one else"...Odd. I also personally have a hard time when I hear You argue that the "drop rates" on purely cosmetic items are to low BECAUSE it will be hard(impossible) for "completionists" to finish a game (in reasonable time) ???....As if it's some kind of obligation for gamemakers to "not upset the completionists ??? Surely the drop rates on items, cosmetic or functional, are totally up to the gamemakers, and especially as they publish them. And if You don't like them because You think they make the game unbalanced OR if it will make it to hard to "scratch Your completionist itch" then don't play it.....The fact that You (and potentially many more) dislike something in a game doesn't make it a "crime". Best regards

Well... The odds to get a rare item might be utter garbage, but as of now even the common items are quite valuable right now. To test the system I bought a couple of desperado crates for about 2,80€ on the market, along with the keys in game for 2,08€. So about 5€ per loot box. BUT the cheapest item I got (which is as far as I know are the cheapest you can get) sell on the marked for 3-4€. Most of the items I dropped have a marked value of 14€. Considering the market fees I am about to double my investments, once I sell the items
Syngard (10 months ago)
I wonder how many of commentators are PUBG or CSGO players, that heave issue with this. PS. In my xp. that I noticed in csgo community is "must heave high level super cool steam account", that is achieved by selling a lot of csgo keys to the bots. For cheep card for shity games ,that is probably the reason for a lot of shity game and pure asset flips on steam in 2017. And paying designers that make cool steam pages that go deep as modding the steam program itself. That is minimum couple of hundreds of dollars. The big difference for me is "I can resell all the skins I bought for the same price"

you're all high if you think this is gambling. just play the da*n game and don't spend any real money on swag, mmkay? if you're stupid enough to go to the "pubg marketplace" and spend serious real coin for a virtual biker jacket, you deserve to be separated from your money. wtf is the matter with y'all? you're all such whiny pussbags, and you dare hide behind the "we have to save the children" bs. millennials really are the lamest and wimpiest generation ever...you don't get something for nothing, sunshine, the world never worked that way. if you're so disturbed by loot boxes, stop paying for and playing the games instead of childishly demanding that the creators bend to your every whim! let your wallet do the talking, stop giving them your money, and spare the rest of us your incessant b*tching, lol :-)

what do you mean you can't cash out. You open the crate - get the item - sell it on steam or OPskins - boom you have money now. It's gambling in every sense of the word.

The “real world value” isn’t a guarantee. Gambling laws don’t depend upon the availability of a third-party market. And limiting to 6 crates a week stops compulsive buyers from buying 100 boxes a day.

Now I'm disappointed that I spent 30 dollars on this game...
