Why Exactly did Cyberpunk 2077 Go With First Person Perspective?

2212 ratings | 63195 views
Cyberpunk 2077 details have been basically, non-existent. Now there’s too damn many. We’re drowning in deets. CD Projekt RED have been talking up a storm at E3 2018 this week, and they’ve shown off a 50-minute demo. Here’s what we’ve learnt, AND what they have to say about the game being a first person RPG. So much character customization but first person, how does it make sense? They should do third person and make it just like The Division...

Woahh theree roach !! No 3rd person not getting this !!

I love fp games but third person games can be incredible if done correctly for example gow, tlou, gta ect.
MHW (2 months ago)
It would be cooler if it was in 3rd person
Fissiz Isz (2 months ago)
People need to realize this isn't the Witcher 4, which is a third person melee game. Cyberpunk 2077, which is a shooter, will play far better in first person, and this applies to other shooters. Third person shooting combat has always been clunky in my opinion, and way less immersive.

Anybody know if its going to be true first person?

Why first person?

The part of being an FPS that bothers me is i love to see the small changes made during game play and in a cyberpunk game there is a lot of it.

I keep hearing about everybody's BS reasoning for why cyberpunk 2077 is a first-person. Justifying the first person shooter or FPP is not a valid reason. First off, someone like me spends more than an hour creating a character when the creator character option is available in a video game. So what's the point of creating a character if most of the time you're going to play him or her in first person. Just seeing your character in a cutscene is not a valid reason. Seeing your character in third person in the cutscene which I stated before is not long enough. And we get to have a 3rd person option when you're driving the vehicles. We're not going to see the character we created in a vehicle because they're in a vehicle. So the only real time you get to see the character that you spent hours creating is in a cutscene. I would say about 90% of the game is you playing your character in first person and you can't see the person you created. The other reason why people are justifying the first person is because they say you can see your ammo count better in first person. I don't know if people noticed but in the GTA series and The Division, you get to see your ammo count. Another reason people say we could see the interactions and the choices we make better in first person. I don't know if people played Detroit become human but you can see your choices very clear and that game is in third person. Just like The Division you could also see your interaction on the screen in third person. Nobody could justify the fact that CD projekt Red only wanted to make cyberpunk 2077 in first-person where you could do all the things in third person just like first person. The only difference is that you are seeing through the eyes of the character instead of third person. And the thing is, most of the media that people consume is in third person movies, TV shows Etc. I am not bashing people that just like first person shooters. If that is your things that's cool but when you had a game called The Witcher III that was in third person, you would expect cyberpunk 2077 to have the option to switch from 3rd to 1st. GTA V did that back in 2014, how come CD projekt Red couldn't do the same? People say the CD projekt Red listens to the community, well I hope someone passes this on to them but there's going to be a lot of people that are not going to play that game because of that reason. Some people would say it's more "immersive" in first person. Then give me the option if I want to see something up close. If I don't, I can just switch back. If CD projekt Red does not put this in third person, then they know where they can stick their game at.

I know this is a bit reductive of me, but I was half heartedly wishing it was The Witcher 3, in the future, with a bigger world, more diverse gameplay, etc. With it being first person it gives me the idea that it will be like Deus Ex plus Prey.
Asholemc (3 months ago)
Basically its a deus ex open world I'll wait when it goes on sale i dont enjoy first person at all which is why i couldnt get into deus ex at all because of it.
Voidq (3 months ago)
All these edgy 9-year-olds addicted to their 3rd person camera because it's the only thing that allows them to get cheap kills in all the stupid BR games out there :D Suddenly every edgelord acts like 1st person camera is a game's doom or something.... this is CDPR, they know what they're doing, you don't. But then again CP2077 is intended for mature audiences so you can stay in your 3rd person safe space in Fortnite...
Warfighter 31 (3 months ago)
I don’t see why being first person is so horrible. CDPR hasn’t let us down so far, and if they want this game to be different than the Witcher than so be it! Just because it’s won’t be what we originally expected doesn’t mean that it’s automatically bad and should be bashed
Adamthegamer66 (3 months ago)
I don’t like that it’s first person mainly because when I create my character I wanna see my character but I won’t be able to see the character I’ve created in first person but still excited for this game can’t wait to see some gameplay soon.

I am happy I want more Cyberpunk games to play and to be in that world in the shoes is my dream come true.
Konrad Pietkiewicz (3 months ago)
In CP u will be playing as yourself and it will be your story (or so they want it to be) so FPP has more sense, in TW u play as Geralt and it was his story "told" be u so TPP was perfect for such an experience. One more point, "this game is/will be FPP/RPG, not FPS/RPG" that's one point ppl forget
Jeffrey Richards (3 months ago)
1st person will work the best to demonstrate the combat style from Table top to video game in the table top version you can aim for specific body parts and if you do enough damage it gets blown off and you can sell organs and limbs on the black market if they are not to badly damaged that is and we still do not know how much we can augment our Character with cybernetics they have so many awesome choices in that field just need to be worried about going cyber crazy with to much cybernetics you lose your humanity and then you get the Special police force we saw in the first trailer come out and put you down.
Socomnick (3 months ago)
Moving to a first person RPG is a good move. Hopefully in the future CD project red moves in and tries to take Bethesda's marketshare and makes a fallout clone.
Silvio Rodriguez (3 months ago)
all i can say is - thank god this game is a first person shooter. CDPR has shown us that 3rd person melee combat is beyond their abilities.

I love borderlands but like its gunplay is already pretty slow
The Athenian (3 months ago)
my question is how challenging the game play will be, i dont want to be fighting sponges but at the same time i dont want to kill everything instantly. in the witcher you had to dodge and use magic to trap, CC, avoid damage but since this is FP im just wondering if it will be a more run and gun style thing.
Léo MARTIN (3 months ago)
3rd person is the cancer of immersion in gaming, I hope all those crybabies will not make them waste time on stuff they dont intend to do
thegreatODEN1 (3 months ago)
It's almost as if people have forgotten that it was CDPR who said in the past CP 2077 could be played in either first person or third person. Of course some gamers are disappointed. For years they thought they were going to be able to play CDPR's next game in their preferred perspective. Their disappointment is understandable. CDPR brought this on themselves.

To say the least, I am very disappointed with this design choice. I'm willing to give the game a shot of course and I do have faith they'll do it well since we're talking about CDPR, but I still can't help but feel let down.
Inspire the Liars (3 months ago)
Let's see how the first person goes. One of the biggest turn offs for Witcher 3, for me anyways, was how clunky Geralt felt when you're running/walking around. Usually first person games are a lot less clunky in that sense.
S- kazi (3 months ago)
FPS games are cheaper to make.
El'amin mochichi (3 months ago)
1st person is wayy better
RogueEagle (3 months ago)
First Person = immersion Third Person = RPG feeling Its like asking that question to Deus Ex, its cuz just like Deus Ex, this game needs immersion to work, and it will probably have more closed spaces tham open, with houses and apartment complexes, a third person view wouldn't feel right at all, it would be like playing Metro on Third person, you wouldn't feel less tham half of what you would in first person.
Bigaly Boo (3 months ago)
Love how in most third person games they don’t give the option to change to FP, but there is never any outrage. The pure hypocrisy is so funny to watch.
Rudolf H (3 months ago)
Lots of people are just making assumptions, first person will do this, third person will do that. We haven’t even seen the gameplay yet.

Its the best for this game, Cyberpunk is very claustophobic and vertical not horizontal like the witcher

You can create and customize a character..but what's the point if im gonna be able to watch it while i play the game? I mean, i wont be running in a car every second of it and i will just see him/her just in a cutscene? I hope they give us the chance to switch to a third person perspective like Skyrim did, for example.
S- kazi (3 months ago)
I doubt it. Third person perspective is very expensive to make.
Julia Faye (3 months ago)
Well if the main argument for it being first person is because the game is shooter focused, then its not the game for me.

bakersmileyface (3 months ago)
I am so happy that it's first person. I personally hate third person shooters (roleplaying game, but with guns, so a shooter)
Stephanie B (3 months ago)
I am curious, if you all think First Person is so great, than why are all trailers in Third Person? I mean, all of them are. People want to see their character, not just their hands and a gun. Movies that do it, are few and far between and are "niche" Lots of people hate them too. The real reason for this is because of consoles being added. If it was PC only, I bet they could do it. But the level of details they are adding to the game would crash most consoles. Memory is the main issue. it takes a lot more to render 3rd person. I know, because I do 3D rendering.

they went with fp because of time restraints and its less expensive dont believe that it was an artistic choice its all about time and money.

Grizzly (3 months ago)
Ricardo what about skyrim, csgo, halflife, borderlands, farcry, Fallout, unreal, Team Fortress, Arma,? And cyberpunk is very vertical not horizontal like the witcher and the hud is most immersive for fp so first person is the best for this game
Ricardo Luján (3 months ago)
in God of War, Ocarina of Time, The Last of Us, Silent Hill, Resident Evil, SUper Mario...every single game honored as Greatest games of it's generation are third person.

My hype went down when I found out it is an FPP. Yes, it's an RPG with high shooting elements in FPP, not an FPS. But still, I prefer an RPG with high shooting elements in TPP than an RPG with high shooting elements in FPP.

I think it was a press conference in 2013, where they said you could normally switch between first and third person. Something like MGS5, or skyrim. Which is great for a person like me, because I can't play fps games because I get motion sickness.
Grizzly (3 months ago)
And if the game would be third person and firstperson why do you think so many people are upset that the game wont have thirdperson
Grizzly (3 months ago)
What i heard from a dev was that the game it self will be first person only but in cars you got the choice to go third person. Also from others that have seen the gameplay

From a gameplay point...wont TPP be better for sword or close quarters combat...that’s why it worked well for TW3...but when you introduce guns into the equation, wont FPP be a logical choice cause you need the precision...???
Ricardo Luján (3 months ago)
Gta in TPP has a great system for shooting..
Solitary Angel (3 months ago)
It looks very much akin to Ghost in The Shell with cyberized Humans. As long as first person is true, ie you cover behind a wall then all you see is the wall in front of your face. And no X-Ray vision tagging mechanic, let's get a game where you lose sight of a target, you have to see it again to re-acquire it. No more Deus Ex, Farcry, type tagging, then see them when they are hidden behind a building. I hope we don't get a game dumbed down with that. I'm fine with an upgrade system where you can acquire that skill, just not one that is part of the game from the start.

can't they just make a third person mode? i mean the game is probably another 2 3 years away. so there's a lot of development time.
Sanderus (3 months ago)
In games with the possibility of FPP/TPP switch, one of these is typically inferior. Perspective changes gameplay. My guess is that CDPR initially tried to do it but failed to deliver similar experience for FPP/TPP and they didn't want to do that.
cbapiaz (3 months ago)
Oh Well we need to see actual gameplay kinda dissapointed that is first person only but cdpr is a Great company so i guess we'll have to Wait and see

Why not let us choose? I can't play first person, I don't understand where I'm going or what I'm doing, it feels like being disembodied, I just hate it and feel uncomfortable, never managed to play one of those games more than a few minutes before dropping out for good. I think first person makes sense only in VR, personally. I will definitely not buy it if it's only fp. I know there are people who get nausea from it too, so I just hope they will decide to implement third person at some point. Crossed fingers. u.u
P-Jo Art (3 months ago)
Exactly! In RPGs you play your own character, not yourself. Bioware rpgs are all in third person, and I'm sure a lot of people like me came to peer at this game after it's been announced that it has romances and lots of rpg content, while Anthem does not. So they could easily steal a huge lot of Bioware's fanbase if it wasn't for this (imo) unwise fps-only choice. As for me, it's not for the motion problem, but the feeling of being without a body, and that I don't know what my character is doing and how its body and limbs are positioned in space, this literally gives me panic. For example when there is an enemy I just go nuts because I feel unable to control the chara or to know what it is doing, if it's hidden or not, etc... ^^; I think there's also the issue of missing peripheral vision that makes it feel awkward and stiff.
Ricardo Luján (3 months ago)
the issue here is that some developers and players believe that immersion is everything but in a fpshooter you can immerse really deep in a game like CoD... but in a rpg the storytelling and character development is the core of the game. a game where you create a character you need to care about him/her but if you are only just gonna see the hands of that character like in a fpp game you cannot feel any compelling about it. my opinion.

eniPoiivoid (3 months ago)
I think they made the right choice. The only problem I see with their choice is character customization. What is the point of it if you can't look at yourself? Unless you look down and you can see yourself. (For example,Play as a female, looks down and sees boobs)
Sanderus (3 months ago)
The point is that depending on what your character looks like various options for completing missions open.
emanyu26 (3 months ago)
wait wut?!!!!!! FIRST PERSON?!!!!!!!! OH FOR F*ck sake!!!! I'm out...that's just crap....
Daniel W (3 months ago)
Because first person is cheaper to develop in a video game. Which is completely stupid because there are customizable characters that you won't even see 90% of the time. Should have been 3rd person. I'm getting off this hype train. No longer I interested.
Jay Davies (2 months ago)
All we've seen is a trailer and the press who saw the demo of gameplay were impressed. One video I watched was made by someone called YongYea and he was skeptical of the first person but then saw why they made the decision. I was watching the video on the side so don't quote me here but I think he said there were 3rd person segments. The fact the perspective has killed your interest in the game before you have really seen it is just plain idiotic.

riglesiasx7 (3 months ago)
Why they did not make the trailer first person? Because 1st person is boring.
riglesiasx7 (3 months ago)
Just imagine the witcher 3, god of war, uncharted, the last of us in a first person gameplay. There is a reason why they are 3rd person, because you can enjoy the beauty of the word in a 3d prospective.
Andrew Johns (1 month ago)
riglesiasx7 and cyberpunk is massive on scale in terms of verticality which none of those games have. And gun play is just better in first person. CDPR know what they are doing
riglesiasx7 (3 months ago)
I got ex machina and the only reason why I did not finish the beginning of the 1st level was because first persons are boring and you cannot fully enjoy a game if you prospective is limited by a two dimensional view.
Comyuse (3 months ago)
first person is just better, even the best parkour game is first person. first person makes interacting with the world better and now that its been brought up, the very few first person cover systems i'v used are more fun
Comyuse (3 months ago)
you must live in a nice fantasy land. the animations don't matter (although what you can see from the fpp is nicer in mirrors edge) and there is nothing that can be described as interactions in ac (you mean the shitty combat system?)
S- kazi (3 months ago)
I know, but the animations and interactions is much superior than Mirror's Edge.
Comyuse (3 months ago)
AC is a terrible parkour game, you just hold a button and run forward
S- kazi (3 months ago)
The best parkour game is Assassin's Creed, not Mirror's Edge.
Mat Broomfield (3 months ago)
Wow, so many rich futuristic visuals and ideas in this video. Very promising indeed!
Fantasy Redux (3 months ago)
It's a FPRPG, except when combat starts, then it is a straight up FPS.
Uncompetative (3 months ago)
CD Projekt RED must be doing gameplay dialogue through approaching someone and gazing at their face to imitate a conversation and looking away to show you are bored with what they are saying in order to skip over parts of their monologue that are irrelevant to you and most significantly responding to their Yes / No questions by nodding and shaking your head. This then suggests that you enter a quasimode to stand still and be able to Lean and change where your gaze is fixated without affecting your heading, as in _GoldenEye 007’s_ Aim quasimode on the N64. If true, this all sounds great.
Justin Price (3 months ago)
Really disappointing news. This game just went from buy on day one to wait for a Steam Sale. I'll still get it but only for under £10.00
Ghost F (3 months ago)
I don't see the big deal. Like we havent even seen gameplay of it. Because the witcher is 3rd person all their games have to be 3rd person?
Ricardo Luján (3 months ago)
by specialist and fans standards. immersion in fpp? yeah right. if it is not for me i wont buy it.
Ghost F (3 months ago)
Ricardo Luján "overrated" why? I think immersion is pretty important in a game. The more immersive the game is the more ill take it seriously. Greatest games by who's standard? As if the perspective is really going to decide how "great" a game is. It works for Bethesda so it should work for everyone else, but like I said earlier game companies should be encouraged to try different things. They don't need to copy every other developer or their previous game. They had a vision for this game centered around first person and they'll prob stick to that. I see absolutely no reason why third person would make this game better especially since we have not seen any footage of it. To me this sounds like a reaction from people who expected it to be just like the witcher. But like you said yourself if third person is such a big deal to you that's fine. I guess dont buy the game then, there are plenty of games coming out that have third person. For me I dont really care and from what I've heard in interviews the game will probably be better in first person.
Ricardo Luján (3 months ago)
it is a video game not rel life so immersion is an overrated word for a game these days. in a shooting game it would be probably a good thing but in exploration games?. All of the greatest games of all time are in TPP. BUt clearly this game is not aimed to ppl like me. and that's fine. im just saying that it would be nice to put a TPP option, if they do not it's ok. Not buying and save for a game that suits me.
S- kazi (3 months ago)
CDPR originally said that it will be a first person AND third person game. I am just disappointed they could not deliver on that.
Ghost F (3 months ago)
I'd argue exploring the environment in the game is more immersive in first person, it makes you feel like you're actually there rather than spectating someone who is there. maybe so but seeing your character in every moment of the game is a small thing imo. I doubt it since in interviews they said this game was designed around the fact that its in first person. I guess everyone has their own preferences but for me I don't feel like its right to tie down the entire company to 3rd person perspective games just because of the witcher, they had a vision for cyberpunk 2077 that differed from the witcher and I think that is ok. Bethesda has made great first person games like Dishonered and Prey, and although those games are more linear I feel like CD can make a great first person experience. No one complained about those games probably because first person was Bethesda's reputation where CD has really only one series everyone knows about.
DimosZargarda (3 months ago)
I dont understand why they didnt do it like Fallout, and let us chose between first and third person, I was damm hyped for this game, now idk anymore
