Tencent are Challenging Valve with NEW Steam Alternative

And, the service is leaving China for the first time. Does Valve and its dominant Steam platform have anything to worry about? It will be good for someone to do better than Steam, they have had a good run. Time for someone else to have a go! Im not much of a fan of Steam and id like to see my favorite games available on another platform.

Perfect World.... One of the trashiest, scummiest, filthiest vermin in the game industry. Nothing but crooks in that sesspool.

No one in the west likes the fucking Chinese, so it will never take off here. Unlike GoG.
Matthew J Canty-Barnes (1 month ago)
Fuck. China.
code_dredd (1 month ago)
Erhmm... yeah, definitely _not_ looking forward to the Chinese govt getting spyware to become hidden components of their games when targeting players, particularly western ones.

I don't want to sound racist but Hells, I don't want my money and game library to be in controlled by China. Let's face it, Money is their thing over the happiness of their people, don't shit me. We all know their government censoring every shit game that gives people ideas. Hey, Steam ain't perfect, but at least I can buy games that I want and I know won't be blacklisted because its genre isn't what the government wants. In conclusion GoG is our answer. LOL BTW EA's online store Origin and Ubisoft's Uplay are both shit on a stick.

Hmm... Tencent or Steam... Oooh, what a tough choice that is. On one hand we have a publisher of plenty of games, who actually release their games, and on the other hand we have a game company who stabbed their fans in the back through killing off a main character and then promising a game that they never released for, well, so far decades... Hmmm.... Tough choice who to trust here...
Imdor (2 months ago)
No matter how good the platform might be, I refuse to give more money to a company that is already way too big.
StarGaming (2 months ago)
I will only use another platform if said platform let me carry over my games instead of charging me to buy the same fucking games again. Otherwise the primary platform will always be Steam as everything is just right there in one place ready to access. Its bad enough having to have Origin and Uplay accounts on top of MMO accounts and the like as nothing seamlessly integrates together like it should.
TheChangNetwork (2 months ago)
tencent is taking this. valve is basically a mom a pop shop going against walmart. people may say they will avoid a chinese company, but at the end of the day, when certain games become wegame exclusives, they will abandon their loyalties quickly.
Pham Thien Phuc (2 months ago)
by the Gaben, what treachery

go steam go steam GOG GOOD TOO BTW
Badmagic Account (2 months ago)
Great, probably pay for exclusives like the shitty consoles do.
Likante (2 months ago)
Miss me with Tencet. They can go fuck themselves. It's hard enough that there's a lot of games I want to play are under them.
tearharvester (2 months ago)
So you think a alternative to steam is to instead give your money to a massive company controlled by a communist country , for the sole porpous of undermining first world's company's market share ? I better stock up on some fire wood and ammo for my hidden cabin in the wood's ;)

Tencent = Hydra? ;) I don't think Valve has much to sweat because I'm like you, I don't want to have a bunch of different launchers. One and done.
idonotmakevidsyet (2 months ago)
You don't need to worry about the chinese having your data... because they already do through the games you play. And for years now.
Tingjun Cai (2 months ago)
As much as I know competition is a good thing, as a Chinese I sincerely hope Tencent fail, do not let that demon corrupt your souls my western friends, Tencent is way more evil than valve, they will make you screaming while dumping your wallet into their revenue. Don’t let those devil win, DEUS VULT (I won’t tell you Tencent is planning to sell same games cheaper than listed on stream, for example they plan to sell MHO 2/3 the price than on steam)

Biomechannibal (2 months ago)
I've spent hundreds on my Steam account. Any company who wants to "challenge" Valve will have to offer me free vouchers for each and every game I own on Steam through their platform instead. If my collection don't travel, then neither will I.
Velin Nedelchev (2 months ago)
You'll be amazed how many PC gamers don't have Steam.
First Name Surname (2 months ago)
They want to bring Chinese games to the global market? So like all the shitty bootlegs? We don't want that either way.
7O7-ZOZ (2 months ago)
Origin or EA has now been selling other games. No longer are the games on their store restricted to EA published games. UPLAY is still restricted to Ubisoft published games only.
7O7-ZOZ (2 months ago)
Chinese gamers have always asked for Chinese language translation. I guess since most AAA publishers ignore this need, a space had been created for another distributor. I'm not Chinese BTW.

GoG is the one people should be looking at. No DRM? Hell yea
Grimah (2 months ago)
This is great! Maybe now valve will stop turning steam into a clunky mess. It's starting to feel like the MySpace of gaming libraries.
JBD (2 months ago)
GoG the platforn that actually lets you own the games you buy not just get a permit to play that can be taken away at anytime like on steam. Oh and the more games you buy the more cash u get to use in future purchases. Ohh and the games are cheaper cause they price after your countries currency and its lovely <3

Didn't Ubisoft get kind of sucked up by Tencent too. I swear I remember the vevindi/ubisoft thing being shelved because of Tencent.
FantasticA (2 months ago)
Steam is not only loved in the West, but in the entire world except China where they have no other option than Tencent's WeGames. And I'll happily allow Valve to stalk my personal data when compared to Tencent who I personally don't give a damn fuck about... as it's a Chinese company, and tbh I really don't have much faith in it. No thanks, I'm happy with Valve.
Cheddulous D (2 months ago)
It’ll only be competitive if their prices are competitive.

It might be getting big but to rival steam would be pretty difficult. Steam has built a community for over a decade and thats something no other game distributor has managed to do.

*Yikes* the amount of sinophobia in this comment section is through the roof.
Morph Verse (1 month ago)
There's no such thing as free market in China, otherwise Chinese would have been playing all the western games we've had in the last 2 decades.. You Chinese are missing out big time.. All companies over the world have to apply to strict Chinese policies and censorship to sell anything into that country.. And again, i don't want any Tencent based software on my PC, (in other words intruding malware) There's a reason why the anti China sentiment is sound in the comment section..
Edwin Xu (2 months ago)
JanitorScruffy puppet companies? What are you on about man? Untrustworthy how? Like Apple with the FBI? Or like Facebook selling personal data to Cambridge Analityca? And China quite literally has freer market and more capitalistic than USA at this moment, but at least Trump is fixing it. You're just proving my point for me.
JanitorScruffy (2 months ago)
It's almost like the CCP and their puppet companies are untrustworthy in a way that makes even the US government look honest and most people know it. But hey, if calling people racist or xenophobic or whatever because they don't trust a communist dictatorship is how you operate, go ahead, you can do it because the CCP doesn't control the internet you're on.
TheNegronomicon (2 months ago)
Remember Yahoo? Remember Blockbuster? PUBG? Massive companies lose out to new competitors from time to time. Steam better watch out because there's various minor things working against them and a competitor that takes advantage of all that could steal their customers away. When businesses have competition, consumers always win.
miguel (2 months ago)
lol chinese sponsored bloatware they cant succeed in a real free market without any govt babysitting

I'd rather not have a steam account, because I prefer GOG's policy. But though I bought a box-version of Skyrim, I needed to have a steam-account in order to play it. That sucks. What happens if Valve decide to shut down Steam? Will my Skyrim be gone for good? Maybe this is a topic for a podcast.
Bainks (2 months ago)
Yeah I am not touching a chinese version of steam were they can just sell my info. No thank you.

Between PS+, Xbox live, and Twitch Prime, and f2p I almost never buy games anymore. Great time to be a cheap gamer. A great era that we live in that we can enjoy such pleasures.
J P (2 months ago)
Twitch Prime will rival Steam if Amazon continues it's path of giving away awesome games every month. Got/will get Battle Chef Brigade, Pillars of Eternity Definitive Edition, Brutal Legend, Up Next Hero, and Tyranny just in this month alone!

I really don't feel comfortable with what Tencent is doing. They've gained so much power so quietly and are not accountable to the same anti-monopoly laws everyone else is because they operate out of China, where the laws are built around whoever makes the most money. I don't really care how hands-off they are, I really don't want to support them if I can help it.
