Tencent are Challenging Valve with NEW Steam Alternative

1459 ratings | 31780 views
WeGame is basically the Chinese equivalent to Steam. Operated by giant Cyberpunk-level megacorp Tencent, it currently only has 220 games. But then it did only launch in September. And, the service is leaving China for the first time. Does Valve and its dominant Steam platform have anything to worry about? No matter how good the platform might be, I refuse to give more money to a company that is already way too big.
StarGaming (8 hours ago)
I will only use another platform if said platform let me carry over my games instead of charging me to buy the same fucking games again. Otherwise the primary platform will always be Steam as everything is just right there in one place ready to access. Its bad enough having to have Origin and Uplay accounts on top of MMO accounts and the like as nothing seamlessly integrates together like it should.
TheChangNetwork (8 hours ago)
tencent is taking this. valve is basically a mom a pop shop going against walmart. people may say they will avoid a chinese company, but at the end of the day, when certain games become wegame exclusives, they will abandon their loyalties quickly.
Pham Thien Phuc (11 hours ago)
by the Gaben, what treachery
Gunzlover SSA (20 hours ago)
go steam go steam GOG GOOD TOO BTW
Badmagic Account (1 day ago)
Great, probably pay for exclusives like the shitty consoles do.
Likante (1 day ago)
Miss me with Tencet. They can go fuck themselves. It's hard enough that there's a lot of games I want to play are under them.
tearharvester (1 day ago)
So you think a alternative to steam is to instead give your money to a massive company controlled by a communist country , for the sole porpous of undermining first world's company's market share ? I better stock up on some fire wood and ammo for my hidden cabin in the wood's ;)

This is not a challenge to steam. I would never install a known Chinese software on my computer. Not a chance.

Loved the way how Mike said ACTIVISION FUC*ING BLIZZARD.

Tencent = Hydra? ;) I don't think Valve has much to sweat because I'm like you, I don't want to have a bunch of different launchers. One and done.
idonotmakevidsyet (3 days ago)
You don't need to worry about the chinese having your data... because they already do through the games you play. And for years now.
Tingjun Cai (3 days ago)
As much as I know competition is a good thing, as a Chinese I sincerely hope Tencent fail, do not let that demon corrupt your souls my western friends, Tencent is way more evil than valve, they will make you screaming while dumping your wallet into their revenue. Don’t let those devil win, DEUS VULT (I won’t tell you Tencent is planning to sell same games cheaper than listed on stream, for example they plan to sell MHO 2/3 the price than on steam)

I can see it now, the first digital distribution platform to give you lead poisoning. ;)
tencent is a virus.
Biomechannibal (3 days ago)
I've spent hundreds on my Steam account. Any company who wants to "challenge" Valve will have to offer me free vouchers for each and every game I own on Steam through their platform instead. If my collection don't travel, then neither will I.
Velin Nedelchev (3 days ago)
You'll be amazed how many PC gamers don't have Steam.
First Name Surname (3 days ago)
They want to bring Chinese games to the global market? So like all the shitty bootlegs? We don't want that either way.
7O7-ZOZ (3 days ago)
Origin or EA has now been selling other games. No longer are the games on their store restricted to EA published games. UPLAY is still restricted to Ubisoft published games only.
7O7-ZOZ (3 days ago)
Chinese gamers have always asked for Chinese language translation. I guess since most AAA publishers ignore this need, a space had been created for another distributor. I'm not Chinese BTW.

I'm happy Steam might be getting a competitior with deep pockets.

GoG is the one people should be looking at. No DRM? Hell yea
Grimah (4 days ago)
This is great! Maybe now valve will stop turning steam into a clunky mess. It's starting to feel like the MySpace of gaming libraries.
JBD (4 days ago)
GoG the platforn that actually lets you own the games you buy not just get a permit to play that can be taken away at anytime like on steam. Oh and the more games you buy the more cash u get to use in future purchases. Ohh and the games are cheaper cause they price after your countries currency and its lovely <3

Didn't Ubisoft get kind of sucked up by Tencent too. I swear I remember the vevindi/ubisoft thing being shelved because of Tencent.
FantasticA (4 days ago)
Steam is not only loved in the West, but in the entire world except China where they have no other option than Tencent's WeGames. And I'll happily allow Valve to stalk my personal data when compared to Tencent who I personally don't give a damn fuck about... as it's a Chinese company, and tbh I really don't have much faith in it. No thanks, I'm happy with Valve.
Cheddulous D (4 days ago)
It’ll only be competitive if their prices are competitive.
Eddie Quist (4 days ago)
They will never get any money from me pay to win bastards.
Ginto Sama (4 days ago)
I want the pretty good gaming launcher..
Isaac Karayoff (4 days ago)
It might be getting big but to rival steam would be pretty difficult. Steam has built a community for over a decade and thats something no other game distributor has managed to do.

*Yikes* the amount of sinophobia in this comment section is through the roof.
Morph Verse (2 days ago)
There's no such thing as free market in China, otherwise Chinese would have been playing all the western we've had in the last 2 decades.. You Chinese are missing out big time.. All companies over the world have to apply to strict Chinese policies and censorship to sell anything into that country.. And again, i don't want any Tencent based software on my PC, (in other words intruding malware) There's a reason why the anti China sentiment is sound in the comment section..
Edwin Xu (2 days ago)
JanitorScruffy puppet companies? What are you on about man? Untrustworthy how? Like Apple with the FBI? Or like Facebook selling personal data to Cambridge Analityca? And China quite literally has freer market and more capitalistic than USA at this moment, but at least Trump is fixing it. You're just proving my point for me.
JanitorScruffy (3 days ago)
It's almost like the CCP and their puppet companies are untrustworthy in a way that makes even the US government look honest and most people know it. But hey, if calling people racist or xenophobic or whatever because they don't trust a communist dictatorship is how you operate, go ahead, you can do it because the CCP doesn't control the internet you're on.
TheNegronomicon (4 days ago)
Remember Yahoo? Remember Blockbuster? PUBG? Massive companies lose out to new competitors from time to time. Steam better watch out because there's various minor things working against them and a competitor that takes advantage of all that could steal their customers away. When businesses have competition, consumers always win.
miguel (4 days ago)
lol chinese sponsored bloatware they cant succeed in a real free market without any govt babysitting

Chinese games and companies are toxic shit though.

I'd rather not have a steam account, because I prefer GOG's policy. But though I bought a box-version of Skyrim, I needed to have a steam-account in order to play it. That sucks. What happens if Valve decide to shut down Steam? Will my Skyrim be gone for good? Maybe this is a topic for a podcast.
Bainks (4 days ago)
Yeah I am not touching a chinese version of steam were they can just sell my info. No thank you.

Between PS+, Xbox live, and Twitch Prime, and f2p I almost never buy games anymore. Great time to be a cheap gamer. A great era that we live in that we can enjoy such pleasures.
J P (4 days ago)
Twitch Prime will rival Steam if Amazon continues it's path of giving away awesome games every month. Got/will get Battle Chef Brigade, Pillars of Eternity Definitive Edition, Brutal Legend, Up Next Hero, and Tyranny just in this month alone!

No thank you, my personal data in Chinese company? Nope, gfy Chinese Communist party, you're not getting my money. Yes, they have ties with CCP, like every bigger company in China. I prefer steam and GoG, than better deal with biggest human rights fucker on this planet.

AlgaeEater09 you most likely own multiple products made from China.

I really don't feel comfortable with what Tencent is doing. They've gained so much power so quietly and are not accountable to the same anti-monopoly laws everyone else is because they operate out of China, where the laws are built around whoever makes the most money. I don't really care how hands-off they are, I really don't want to support them if I can help it.

You abandon Steam and you are guilty of High Cuckery and anti-American activities. You should be flogged in the street.
TheNzFox (4 days ago)
sorry, steam has MANY flaws, but its better than a megacorporation that is right out of a dystopian novel. I don't want to be anywhere near a system that gives me a "society productivity score" based on what games I play, who with, and how often

China #1 :*(
malbhet (4 days ago)
If you think Valve has a shit ton of shit games being uploaded everyday, thus making it impossible to find good games, just wait until Wegame start doing the same along with releasing cheaply made knock-off copies of the same shitty cash grabs that already plague Steam. You will get twice as many shitty cash grabs as steam on WEGAME because the chinese gaming market love their copy and paste knockoffs.
JNPollard (4 days ago)
Umm nothing can beat Steam
Azure Vizor (4 days ago)
We all know that everything China makes is a cheap imitation. Plus, with their frequently changing laws of what's not banned and what is, why would I bother dealing with them as opposed to Steam?

Steam Sucks
Cooking Vacation (4 days ago)
I would never, ever download any games from any platform that's owned by a Chinese company that's based in China. You just know that all of your data is going to the Chinese government and you're basically supporting a tyrranical government.

"I like all my games in one place". he says. So do I, on my PC, with no damn launcher needed, his is why I have over 300 games from GOG, and around 100, mostly Steam,l use launcher's. As a modder, I much prefer DRM free, but no launcher is a must have. Steam Workshop requires the games owned on Steam. mods brimmed a Valve pay wall. and forces updates on games, and mods. I go as far as re-buying games released on GOG, and temove them elsewhere, but most gamers, "like games in one place", and stick with Steam, no matter how bad it is. GOG is Valve's biggest competitor, because of it's policies, not it's bank balance. Size of thei wad of cash, won't make Stream users switch. or EA's Origin would be much bigger, than it is now.
