Jake the Playstation Gamer micro transactions and loot boxes pushed the video game industry into a billion dollar business. Simple math: back then games only costed $60. If a company sold 10 million copies, which is A LOT, that’s still only $600m in profits. The amount of money they make is so high that it’s mostly kept a secret within every company. Just because you don’t have any money doesn’t mean your neighbors or whomever doesn’t either. Investors know video games better than you and I combined
robbytherob I don't think they do! Because if they did, they would know that microtransactions and loot boxes in a video game that your already paying $60 for is a terrible idea. Some gamers have this thing called a budget.

Jake the Playstation Gamer of course they do. Only a dummy would invest in an industry they know nothing about.

Has anybody considered starting a petition to get Disney to stop licencing to a company that promotes gambling to children? Make a real big PR stink about it.
Fiery Nugget (1 month ago)
Well, people weren't convinced to get the 2nd since battlefront 1 lacked content and the second was even worse. Imo, the 1st is better because no microtransactions and an amazing vr mission for ps4 which had potential for more. If EA still has the licence and announces battlefront 3, they will sell way less because 2 games aren't convincing for a 3rd, the updates in battlefront 2 keep screwing up.

7 million idiots.
oneandy2 (3 months ago)
As much as you don't like micro transactions, you're really not going to like government sticking it's nose further into the video game industry. If you don't like micro transactions then don't use them. Don't buy games that use them, don't support companies that use them. You don't need government to protect you from them... and you definitely aren't going to like the result when it tries. Politicians don't know shit about video games. They won't understand the problem they're trying to legislate against. And they'll write some overbroad piece of shit law that will wind up having all kinds of unintended negative consequences. It happens every time.
Aaron Skinner (6 months ago)
Regarding star wars battlefront 2: since EA was leaning so heavily on Microtra - I mean "Live Services" for their projected revenue, does that mean they don't have nearly the amount of money they thought they would make? I would like to know how all this affects future "free dlc" and content for the game. Would this limit the amount of dlc they can make for battlefront 2 in the future? I'm one of those who bought the game (yeah, I know. sorry), and I want to know what to expect from these people.

What I want to know is how EA is considered AAA? Their games are mediocre at best. ME:Andromeda was the last straw with EA as far as I am concerned. Never again will I fall for anything put out by EA. I wouldn't even take a free game from EA.
TheNizoubizou (7 months ago)
when fifa kids wake up and says enough is enough, EA will be doomed
Fiery Nugget (7 months ago)
I don’t understand why people even spend real money for loot boxes when they don’t know what they’ll get, Ive seen a couple of you tubers spending lots of money on loot crates to see how random it is and they all got terrible things. Micro transactions shouldn’t even be in games, they should only be in mobile games

Cod ww2’s resistance event is pay to win because the new assault rifle is only acquired by paying for it rather than earning it like the other weapons and it outperforms all the guns in the game

Never have I been so disturbed and disgusted in my whole life as a gamer. This whole controversy reached the gaming community in mass and even those not a part of it and EA still has the balls to put Loot Boxes back into the game that caused it all. I am absolutely appalled. It's an absolute insult to the gaming community as a whole and it hurts because EA has made awesome games before (MIrror's Edge, Dead Space, Titanfall 2) but none of that matters anymore. EA is fucking dead to me now. I will NEVER buy any of their games again and no one else should either. Let them rot in hell.

Like an Xbone CEO once said- *I could shit in a box and sell it. And people would still buy it.*
Clemmmy (8 months ago)
I just want to feel appreciated (being rewarded in-game, or free DLCs, or having enough content in the base game, etc) when I give $60 to a developer. Yes, it is the base game but it's still $60! More often than not, I don't feel like a game company appreciates me for buying the base game at all, and instead made me feel inferior and "not good enough" by shoving all these payable extra content in my face. That's the part I'm mainly frustrated with. If I felt appreciated and overall enjoyed my experience with the game, I will absolutely buy any DLCs that they put out, because very importantly, I enjoyed the base game and now I want more. My main point is: Make gamers feel appreciated regardless of what version of the game they buy.
WushuKnight19 (8 months ago)
At this point, I have to question EA's budget management, and spendings. With all that controversy, they should be proud that they even sold 2 million copies. How does a $200 - $300 million dollar game with almost 1k devs working on it ended up only being a boring generic trash bag compared to Nier Automata, Persona 5, Resident Evil 7, Nioh, Yakuza, Horizon, Wolfenstein, Evil Within 2, Gravity Rush 2, Monster Hunter World, DOKI DOKI LITERATURE CLUB (REALLY EA?) that not only had 1/4 of the budget, but had less dev teams. HOW, HOW DO YOU NOT FEEL EMBARRASSED? Think how much EA could've saves without spending a ship load on marketing, unless gimmicks, and tacked on multiplayer and just did a single player focused linear STAR WARS game with tons of extra content like Bayonetta. Oh, wait, they don't, they need money FAST, so they'll put EVERY MONETIZE PRACTICE at the start, because a game like STAR WARS doesn't sell on it's own amirite?
Constantino Tzavaras (8 months ago)
If you buy EA, go away.
Tojo Rakoto Ramanantsoa (8 months ago)
I wish Disney would cut them at the source, no more Star Wars for EA (and I'm not a Star Wars fan). Same for BioWare, or Bungie please get the hell out of there... EA and Activision will make you release shitty games (hum hum... Andromeda, Destiny,  Anthem?) And last but not least, for all my fellow gamers out there, please boycott all their products, no matter how excited you are about the new Madden, FIFA, Battlefield, or whatever... just don't buy it. Don't enable their bad practice, don't let them milk you the way they are right now. If we let them, it'll just get worse and worse, and even (relatively) good companies will have no choice but to do the same, and we, gamers,  are the ones that will be screwed.
ColdOneK (8 months ago)
Government has absolutely no business getting involved w/ games - they'll only make it worse - as they have w/ every single thing they've become involved with. Creating laws and legislation under the whims of two parties pushing and pulling like children competing for attention - isn't conducive to success. I don't care how predatory these ass hat companies get - or how buyer beware the market becomes - it will still be better than government involvement. The morons who fall for those anti-consumer business practices - deserve it. The crap EA ceo is correct though - micro-transactions/DLC or so-called "Live Services" - are an important part for games moving forward. Games are hilariously expensive + crazy risky endeavors. Such things not only help to off-set that cost, but if used by a non-hostile company - legitimately add a lot of value to those games. Look at Dark Souls 3, while it did not have micro-transactions, it had DLC in the form of expansions. That many people purchased and enjoyed. That extended the life of a phenomenal game even further. Look at Overwatch - a game (I personally have absolutely no interest in) that still receives a bunch of content updates and support from Blizzard w/ a healthy cosmetic micro-transaction system in place - that funds that development. Point is, these things can be positive - for both consumer + game developer. But not if people feed anti-consumer companies - or if government gets involved.

EA have ALWAYS been about greed and NEVER about quality of game and their fans. They buy out other studios and other intellectual properties and if they cannot subvert them properties to their own greed machine, the destroy them and make sure they are never heard from again. They are game mafia.
krzychu777xD (8 months ago)
I think there needs to be some kind of Union of Players so it can stand against these types of stupid business strategies. It needs to be supported by some biggest gaming faces on youtube so they boycot their game and not do any materials from it, while giving it a bad reputation. Any bigger game would be rated by them simillar to PEGA ratings so it meets players' standarts. (sorry, just dreaming)

Battlefront 2 was And is a failure dude. It looks great but plays below average. There’s still not enough people in the galactic assault maps. You are the worst kind of person. All you do is try to tear apart video game companies based on...what? Nothing? You act as if the microtransactions within BF2 were predatory or malicious in intent. Have you actually played the game? There was NOTHING pay2win in the game. Nothing at all, even if they kept microtransactions on at release. It's fine to call out companies on their bullshit, and I could see it for some of their mobile Star Wars games, but for BF2? You're insane dude. I won't even finish watching your video. Not only does it give me a headache for constant stupidity, but I'd never support you.

PeterTheRock3 (8 months ago)
No... that's just incorrect. EA announced that they were going to reintroduce microtransactions at some point right when they removed them. The smartest thing us consumers couldve done (but didnt) was avoid this game like the plague. Have it be such a flop financially that EA would view lootbox microtransactions as a gamble not worth betting on. Those who still bought the game basically expressed that they're ok with this "Sorry, not sorry" attitude EA has shown.
MRWHITE3535 (8 months ago)
Two words... FUCK EA.
mm ltn (8 months ago)
I have to agree EA has no intentions of giving up such a lucrative business model, I definitely see a continued trend on all their gaming titles. Only the upcoming legislations Will Be the Anchor to slow down such a massive ship at which time the investors will see that that profitable margin has deteriorated and no longer continue to heavily invest in such companies. By such time a company like Microsoft which is just speculation at this point in time would be the company to sweep in buy EA with all of its AAA titles and give us the Golden Era of gaming that we all hope for, and I say this because just like its widespread news now in YouTube and internet that possible Microsoft purchase of EA would be the push that it needs in order to get the Xbox One platform on the top where it needs to be, although I am a PC guy at heart I'd rather see Microsoft and the Xbox platform in control of all the AAA title instead of enduring all the hardships that EA is now putting all that care gaming community through.
Willian Guizzo (8 months ago)
EA are still going to profit a whole lot of money from FIFA and sports games’ players, who spend quite some money on those cards and lootboxes and don’t really care a lot about the gaming community lol
jay jayson (8 months ago)
I think you guys need to seriously learn how capitalism works, why would a business abandon these "live service" stuff when they post numbers like 787 million is one quarter alone? Of course they will look to enhance that and keep in mind when posting nonsense like "I hope EA dies" that thousands upon thousands will lose their jobs if that were to happen. Also government regulation isnt the saving grace to loot boxes, that's the last thing you want and if you want ineptitude in gaming, I think you don't know how goverment works either.
Christopher Scott (8 months ago)
It only sold 7 million copies due to EA's greed. And also let's be honest here. Battlefront II really isn't all that great to begin with. The story is a crock of stupid shit and far fetched. (A lie from the Clinton's is more believable) and the multiplayer still to this day is an unbalanced mess. I hadn't played this game for over a month until last night. I shortly recalled why I stopped playing it after playing multiplayer for an hour after I kept getting sniped by a player from a very long distance using a pistol. Yeah, a pistol apparently trumped my sniper rifle, after I shot the player numerous times, then killed almost instantly...by a pistol. Bullshit. They did finally do something with the nearly unkillable wookie hero though that had jacked up health and weapon. This game's progression system and perks are truly a mess thats going to be hard to fix, while its player base is dying off little by little. Fuck this game.

That’s fine, bring your micro transactions back. People are gong to stop buying your game. How sad that a game with HUGE potential is soiled by greed. Instead of giving your customers what they want and setting yourself up for more sales in sequels, you want to displease your paying customers, disrespect and ignore them and then ask for more money after purchasing the game. Fuck off. Never buying an EA game again. Someone else needs to take the Star Wars license.
Devonly (8 months ago)
The bottom line is Andrew and the executive are incentived by financial performance. The stock market is lapping up the "news" and stock prices have gone even higher. One game with a month of MTX disabled will be like a pin drop. What needs to happen is to speak to group like FiFa and the other sporting agencies to revoke EA's license for sports games or a long shot but raise hundreds of millions and outbid EA when the license terms expires and its up for renewal. But their sports titles, their bread and butter. That will make them listen. Having said you GUYS who are forking hand over fist with your credits card and buying any microtransactions. Stop It! It's as much your fault, they wouldn't be harpooning you whales if you didn't keep falling for the same old money grabbing tricks.

The thing that really makes MT feels wrong is the randomness of it. Clearly designed to encurage a ”just one more” kind of thinking among players and driving people into compulsive/addictive behaviour. If they had a store where they released new skins, weapons etc. on a regular basis and you - as a player - could preview the item and know that if you pay 5$ you are guaranteed that item, then I don’t think as many ppl would be upset.
The Smeef (8 months ago)
You all sitting here moaning about the people who brought the game, how about you mind you own buisness. People love StarWars and altho EA Fucked up at the start well trust me if you have actually been reading what the devs said then you will clearly see this game has loads to come and even Microtransactions wont be tied to progression instead cosmetics or other items and thats confirmed.

EA doesn’t care bc they still sold 7million. While we know that is not a main source of income for games now-a-days (MTX are) this still shows the people don’t care (unfortunately) and they see these numbers and say, “well we still sold that many..we will implement MTX again when this blows over...” we almost won except ppl still bought :(
