Gaming Culture: Whatever happened to the RTS Genre?

1569 ratings | 169594 views
The RTS genre was the greatest thing possible 20 years ago. But somewhere along the line something was lost. Fewer games were released, fewer games were successful, fewer innovated and even fewer have enough staying power to become part of the culture, just as their predecessors. So, what happened? An RTS game that is fun, and relaxing and competitive all at the same time depending on who you play against, relaxing, you get to build impressive structuress that serve key purposes, also capture key structures that tip the balance of power to break stale mates or but make it balanced enough so that players have to improve their skill level. a game that never gets stale, always has something new to learn, always has another level to play it.
hustler3of4culture3 (2 months ago)
GaminGHD I really enjoyed candc II on Xbox. It was difficult to learn, but some of the levels were brilliant. Sometimes you could only build certain units, or you could only have certain units. It was the limitations on what you could build that made it GREAT.
Dave D (3 months ago)
The fact you say starcraft brought the idea of asymmetry makes me think you actually never played C&C
spd7693 (3 months ago)
GaminGHD Fun fact: my land, Bulgaria, has released three full length games that got international attention and all of them were RTS - King, Celtic Kings and The Dark Legions.

Nothing. They are still popular to our generation of 00's 00s that people were 20's 10's is call of duty gross. Fps I guess Rts is the best and now we are grown up! I still play 90percent rts
Mr. Coldfire (1 month ago)
Galactic Battlegrounds is apparently Star Trek now.
Humam GFE (1 month ago)
Companies killed rts genre and now they will kill the whole gaming world with them stupid ideas because them god is money they dont interested in anything only money and money consoles is sucks now exclusive is everywhere now mobile start to have exclusive really and they fucked everything the only way to make gaming great agian by killing consoles and this shit loot boxes and pay to win games and tgis will make both pc and mobile great and if they cant kill mobile too because 98% of mobile games is pay to win and holy crap gameloft its even worse than ea but fuckkkkkkkk

too much time investment needed, other genres much more casual friendly (moba, fps, battle royale).. death of RTS
Jarin Xeno (1 month ago)
EA killed it. They bought every company that made RTS games and destroyed them. Blizzard still makes Star Craft but it takes them decades to make a game.
Adrian A (1 month ago)
Dune, Warcraft, Dune 2 ... Warcraft 2 .... C&C .... Star Craft1 ahhhh .... good times .
fernarias (1 month ago)
Reasons for decline; great games were followed up by terrible games as they tried to sell you another hit (think how crappy dune 3 is to dune 2 and warcraft III, which I stopped playing really early, compared to I and II, which I played until windows wouldn't let me) with too much crap, 39 dollar games became 69 dollar games in one year, not being able to play the old games once you upgraded your operating system was kind of bs.
Eugene Simakin (1 month ago)
Well I think rts evolved. Now we have games like they are billions or rimworld. Sure it's hard to say that they are rts with in game pause button and no multiplayer ,but gameplay and the heart of the game feels like rts.
Vherstinae (1 month ago)
Much as I love Starcraft, the ultimate RTS to me will always be Command & Conquer Tiberian Sun.
GreyMatter121 (1 month ago)
Personally, I'd like to see a mixture between Stronghold, and an RPG. The game would be exactly like stronghold, but your lord is your RPG character that gains exp and items that you carry with you after skirmish matches.

Man... RTS has always been and always will be my favorite genre. C&C Brings back so many found memories. I've enjoyed so many series of RTS games. What is everyone's fav? …. My only major complaint about RTS games was the lack of improvement in AI. With all the advancements over the years how have there been no major improvements... In most cases AI just gets a boost of some sort instead of playing smarter. Especially when it comes to campaign and diplomacy. hahaha its the worse.
Eru Gi (1 month ago)
18:35 what is the game name starting at this time, can't figure it out from the way narrator says. And as far as time travel in RTS is concerned it was not a new idea - Red Alert did it, Original Wars did it...some more i guess also tried ;)
Eru Gi (1 month ago)
oh...didn't know that was available in grey goo :O
unacomn (1 month ago)
It's Gray Goo. And I didn't mean time travel as a story element, but as a gameplay element, where you fight a battle in time, as well as space, where you can send units back in time to help you win a fight you started before you build them.
Eru Gi (1 month ago)
The HUD in C&C looks unfamiliar to me...am I having an amnesia or is it some kind of mod you're using?

Cant wait for age of empire 4
Leon Allen (2 months ago)
I think the way to rescue it is to make a new FULL Command and Conquer title for console. Release a mouse and keyboard as well. Then the controls arent a problem. Also Commandos was awesome too.

/Talks about RTS games that popularised or defined the genre. /Completely neglects Age of Empires II.
Divergent Droid (2 months ago)
Simple answer, RTS Sucked so it Died. Best examples of good RTS was when it was mixed with First Person with the main focus on First person and RTS used as a tool in the world as in BattleZone Combat Commander and Star Trek New Worlds.
zabarules (2 months ago)
Try Earth 2150 or any other from that series, modular vehicle build. Old game, but still not bad, and lots of you didn't heard of it. https://store.steampowered.com/app/253880/Earth_2150_Trilogy/

Age of Empires, Age of Mythology, Rise of nations, warcraft. It is very supisious why this guy was not talking much about AoE when talking about RTS.
Mr Gunslinger (2 months ago)
Like others said: Total annihilation. Such an underdog, 10 years WAAY ahead of his time. Nothing even came close until starcraft war released 6-7 years later

Waiting for Age of Empires 4 already announced, and eventually a WarCraft 4.
Meme (2 months ago)
Company of heroes(2006) best RTS game ever made the physics engine was ahead of it's time even better than Crysis(2007) with graphics like COD 2(2005) Game was literally saving Private Ryan simulator And then opposing fronts came as dlc with British and German campaign (yes you heard me German campaign in WW2) And that expansion was Call of Duty simulator(for the British) And for Germans it's Hitlers wunderwaffe simulator The main reason why RTS is forgotten genere is because there is no profit in it and it can't work on consoles

i think the people who started playing computer in the old days were automaticly more intrested in the complexity RTS can offer, these days PC gaming is a lot more accesable and the kind of people who play pc games have also changed alot and i think they are more drawn to easy to learn games
Wade Pentz (2 months ago)
No mention of Company of Heroes? That game reinvigorated the genre by introducing a number of unique and fun mechanics.

Really isnt a fan of TA eh? XD despite how bad AOE looks compared to anyone whose played TA.
Tristan T. (2 months ago)
You take some liberties here and just threw in your opinions with out distinguishing them from the facts. Just as a example 12:55 you said a MOBA and RTS was not even close and saying so would mean that GTA and PING PONG wear the same this is a Black and White Fallacy not a logical argument. Gaming isn't 100% One thing or the Other and the differences between MOBAs and RTS can be very blurry. Examples that blur these "lines" are games that would fall into sub categories like "squad based RTS" or Mixed Categorizes like "RTS RPG". You even went further with this Argument 16:53 claiming that Games that weren't apart of your narrow view of RTS wear just corruption in the RTS field.

What happened to them? - Art of War: Red Tides - Starcraft Remastered - Northgard - Halo Wars 2 - Subsiege - Warhammer 40k: Dawn of War 3 - Tooth & Tail - Spellforce 3 Those were just in 2017, when this video was made, and those are just the ones I was interested in... Just because a game doesn't meet YOUR definition of an RTS game doesn't mean the game isn't a good RTS game. You can't make every game a AoE style game. They'll get boring, fast. The RTS genre HAS evolved and it's become less base vs base (starcraft) and more reality-based battlefield environments like "Gates of Hell", which is also out in 2017.
AidanofVT (2 months ago)
Anyone interested should take a look at Planetary Annihilation.

What happened? Here’s what happened. RTS isn’t as profitable as FPS. Why? Consoles. If you make a shooter... It can go on... The PC Xbox One PS4 Switch Etc. An RTS cannot. An RTS requires a mouse and keyboard, period. So if you are a developer, meaning the owner of a software business, the best way to ensure you meet financial goals is to reach out to the majority of the market... That’s right, the console market gives you access to all those players on console and thus improves your revenue stream. An FPS also makes it easier for you to get funding from publishers to make your game. An FPS is also more accessible than an RTS. FPS also makes it easy to implement Crazy Monetization Schemes, aka loot boxes. FPS fans are also more willing to ignore and contribute to these schemes. RTS gamers... Not so much. So there you go... RTS is gone because it’s not as profitable, period. No one in the industry ever makes a game for fun, they make it to generate revenue. Hope this clears everything up. Oh and why were Blizzard’s RTS games at the top of the pile from the rest? Battle.net, period. Battle.net gave you an easy way to talk to, setup, and play the game. Other games used a traditional sever browser, lacked friends lists, etc.

AoE 1 & 2, C&C Tiberium Sun, Red Alert 1 & 2, Dune2000... fuck yeah. Those were the times.

Forgot to mention world in conflict. That remains my fav even though I play sc2. I was stoked for cnc generals on frostbite engine but EA fails at everything so that was miss :(
ApocGuy (2 months ago)
dawn of war 1, earth series, dark reign, total annihilation, c&C, age of empires series, age of mythology (clone of AoE, but fun one), ground control 1/2, mech commander (yeah i know, silly me. but i like that game), supreme commander/add-on, world in conflict...great old times of even greater games. not keen of modern RTS though
Chad Kimsey (2 months ago)
Dude, what about Supreme Commander - Forged Alliance? Air, navy, and ground with 3 tech levels each, 4 different "races", huge OP experimental units unique to each faction, nukes HUGE aoe unlimited range and smaller tactical missles, and never seen before large maps with artillery and high tech units with 10km attach range....epic RTS i transferred to from SC2 due to large scale battle and much more complex strategy & eco balance. Still huge even today, why no coverage of SCFAF ???

The first time I played C&C was on the Sega Saturn. I liked it, but once I played C&C Red Alert Retaliation on the PS1, that game was so fun. I still have the soundtrack to it. Starcraft was good on the N64. I wish they would put part 2 on consoles now. C&C Tiberium Wars on the Xbox 360 actually had good controls, which isn't always the case on consoles.

I loved the unique large scale maps and huge tech available with tach missles, naval cruisers w 5km ranged missle barrage etc., awesome game I still play. Where else can you throw a nuke 30km away on your enemy while sneaking in experimental spider walking fortresses fitted with 6 different wpn systems standing 100ft high???

Empire Earth 1 is the best RTS ever created, nothing compared to that. All we need is a HD re make of Empire Earth 1 with more units on screen at once and a better zoom out (the modding community is doing a great job with EE 1.5 :-p )
Lt. Kettch (2 months ago)
One aspect that I think warrants inclusion is that now, today, we have the ultimate luxury or choice. We can play any of those games right now. So which do you chose to replay? My choices are Command & Conquer Generals Zero hour Sins of a Solar Empire Empire at War Although I haven’t played AoE in a while

An RTS game needs to have an amazing editor to last. I always was a casual player, most people are. Don't have the time to sink into a game to become a hyper-competitive tryharding pro player. So what players like me come back for are custom maps. I still regularly play WC3 custom goodness to this day. After 30 hours or so in Battle for Middleearth 2 it was mostly custom maps that kept me coming back for 100 more (or, not a steam game for me so i am guessing numbers). You can't say Dawn of War without mentioning Ultimate Apocalypse in the same breath, and that was a long time after some of the most amazing custom content had hooked me and stopped me from ever running to far away. A perfectly balanced, and super competitive base game is an amazing thing, having limitless options is even better and i think the RTS genre simply forgot that it has the potential to have the most options. No other genre has spawned as many sub-genres. Also, i get that the background song is a staple of yours at this point, but to me it has gotten rather old. And boring. Just an opinion :D
Mitch D (2 months ago)
I still play Age of Empires 2 everyday on a 1080 :P

Try art of war 3
borderline (2 months ago)
This felt very unfocused and rambly, you need to make your scripts laser focused and better paced, and show more relevant footage while talking. You're talking about Warcraft 3 and MOBA, while showing Age of Empires. You start with Dune 2 and C&C, then just ramble about Starcraft while jumping around different titles. Sorry, but it's reaaaally off-putting and it's hard to follow your point most of the time because it doesn't seem like you have one. I'm half way through and it just feels like this could've been five minutes if you ripped out all of the constant meandering.
Mohamed Farouk Elewa (2 months ago)
quick question why the high "unlike" ratio ?
Vrangsynn (2 months ago)
The reason RTS declined is because, first, it fucking devolved into units with pure rock-scissors-paper mechanics. And second, because it fucking devolved again, for the worse, into tower defense genre.

Did you just say Galactic Battlegrounds was one of the first Star Trek RTS games? Lol seriously though I enjoyed the video.
Jiří Mothejzík (2 months ago)
Personally, what I would like to see are great stories based on multiple choices and optional objectives (something that could be seen in Starcraft 2: Wings of Liberty, but not so much in the expansions), all for the sake of getting really invested in the game and wanting to know how it ends (at least from the single-player perspective), although I admit this is probably much easier to achieve in a "ragtag bunch of misfits" non-rts game like Mass Effect. Still, a compelling story would make a huge difference - all it takes after that is for the core game mechanics to not be a complete rubbish, because as long as the story and emotinal investment can pull you in, you won't even notice it's another starcraft clone (in this sense it could be said that RTS games could work if the focus shifted from multiplayer to singleplayer campaings).
Obliviously Aware (2 months ago)
We need an RTS that allows you to zoom all the way from an entire galaxy to zooming in on a single battlefield. I find being stuck in a 2d battlefield or a 3D maze annoying when the two are not mutually exclusive.

I want updates. Civ is a clasic example. The tech tree has not dev from civ 3 to 6. Yet warfare has. I want to relive wars of the world all over that i read about in history books. Romance of the three kingdoms was my main rts. Played one to 13. But i wanted more wars. 16 kingdoms war example. Mongolua wars. In todays sadia, afgan, iraq and so on. Drones, agent orange, chemical and so on with new tech. I didnt like limitations of viv v or 6. Civ 4 was great.
