Korea encourages Russians to compete at PyeongChang 2018 as neutrals
한국, 러시아가 평창 올림픽에서 중립국으로서 참여 기대 The International Olympic Committee banned Russia from the upcoming Winter Olympics due to a widespread doping scandal. Moscow is open to its athleses competing in the global games individually under a neutral flag. And according to our Won Jung-hwan, Korea, too, is encouraging them to come to Pyeongchang. The International Olympic Committee said on Tuesday that evidence had emerged of what it called an unprecedented systematic manipulation of the anti-doping system. The committee suspended the Russian national team with "immediate effect", but they have allowed Russian athletes to compete as neutrals if they satisfy strict conditions that show they are clean. Korean-born Russian short track speed skater Victor An is one of those athletes. The first Russian Olympic short track gold medalist said on Wednesday that if Russia doesn't boycott PyeongChang 2018, he'll compete as a neutral at next year's Winter Olympics. Although there have been calls within Russia to declare a boycott, An's appearance on the ice of his native country seems likely after Russian President Vladimir Putin announced on Wednesday that Moscow will not stop Russians from participating in the 2018 PyeongChang Winter Games as neutral athletes competing under the Olympic flag. A Blue House official said Seoul welcomes the decision by Putin to allow Russians to compete as neutral athletes under the Olympic flag, and said that Korea is willing to work with the IOC to allow Russian athletes' participation. Korea's Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism also issued an official statement on the IOC decision, saying that it "feels regretful" over the Russia ban. Korea is trying to avoid a situation where the 2018 PyeongChang Winter Olympics, which starts on February 9th, takes place without the athletes from one of the powerhouses of winter sport. Russian athletes return home after taking part in Winter Olympics
(26 Feb 2018) Russian athletes who participated in the Winter Games in Pyeongchang were on Monday welcomed by cheering supporters upon their return to Moscow. A group of cheering fans waved flowers and flags and cheered on the athletes as they arrived for a short briefing at the airport. Russian athletes were competing under a neutral flag, and won 17 medals in South Korea - two gold, six silver and nine bronze. The gold medals went to Russian figure skater Alina Zagitova and the men's ice hockey team. The ice hockey team defied International Olympic Committee rules by belting out the anthem at their medal ceremony following Sunday's 4-3 overtime win against Germany in the gold medal game.   The IOC said on Monday it wouldn't derail Russia's imminent return from a doping suspension. Olympic Flame Arrives In Moscow
The Olympic flame arrived in Moscow on Sunday (October 6), carried in a lantern aboard an Aeroflot plane specially-decorated in the colours and logos of the Sochi 2014 Olympic Games. A Russian honour guard, consisting of all of the branches of the Russian armed services greeted the flame that travelled from Greece, on its eventual way to the Games in February. Russian Deputy Prime Minister Dmitry Kozak, who emerged from the plane carrying the flame in a lantern with six-time Olympic champion speed skater Lydia Skoblikova and Sochi 2014 Olympics Organising Committee President Dmitry Chernyshenko in tow, said Russia's Olympics planning had unified the country. "Today is a symbolic day for all of us which quite possibly may turn out to become a historic date. After 30 years, Russia is again meeting the Olympic flame which was lit in the homeland of the Olympic Games, in the ancient Olympia," Kozak said. Chernyshenko said Russian citizens everywhere would be touched by the impressive relay. "Russia, for the first time in its history, receives one of the most important, well-known symbols in the world - the Olympic flame, and we are proud that our Russian torch relay will be unique: 123 days, 65,000 kilometres. The flame will be carried by 14,000 torch bearers. We will do everything to make sure that the relay is carried out at the very highest level. We will make it so that the flame sparks a fire in the hearts of millions of citizens. Wait for it, and soon the relay will be in your city," he said. After the brief airport ceremony, the flame headed to Red Square where President Vladimir Putin will use it to light the Olympic relay torch. According to the organising committee, Olympic flame will not only travel by torch bearers, but also by car, train, plane, on a Russian troika, reindeer and dog sleds, bicycle and snow cat, as well as sleighs, carts and snowmobiles, a combine harvester, carriage, and camel.

Sochi Olympics: Olympic ring fails to open at opening ceremony
Subscribe to ITN News: http://bit.ly/1bmWO8h A technical hitch during the opening ceremony for the Winter Olympics in Sochi meant that the last of the five rings making up the Olympic symbol failed to open. Russian television broadcasted a pre-taped version of the Games' symbol from rehearsals, which millions of people in Russia saw. The apparent failure meant the ring could not be illuminated by fireworks as had happened during rehearsals. Five giant snowflake-shaped structures suspended from the roof of the Fisht Stadium on the shores of the Black Sea in Sochi were supposed to open into circles and then light up with pyrotechnics. Only four opened, and that particular feature, near the very start of the 2-1/2-hour opening ceremony, was abandoned. Ceremony producer Konstantin Ernst was philosophical about the mishap. "Among five rings, one of them didn't open. And you know, Zen Buddhists have an idea: if you have an ideally polished ball, you have to leave a scratch, to get an idea of how ideally it was polished," he said. Report by Andrea Lilly. Opening Ceremony - Sochi 2014 Paralympic Winter Games
The Sochi 2014 Paralympic Winter Games began with a stunning Opening Ceremony on Friday evening (7 March) at Fisht Stadium with a volunteer cast of more than 2,500 people from the Krasnodar region of Russia taking centre stage, and two-time Paralympic champion swimmer Olesya Vladykina and six-time Paralympic champion cross-country skier Sergey Shilov lighting the Paralympic cauldron. With a theme of "Breaking The Ice," the Opening Ceremony evoked the spirit of Russia and the importance of breaking down barriers and stereotypes faced by people around the world every day. During his Opening Ceremony speech, IPC President Sir Philip Craven said: "Thirty-four years ago when the old Soviet Union declined the opportunity to stage the 1980 Paralympic Games in Moscow, the prospect of Russia staging its first Paralympic Games was nothing but a dream. "But dreams do come true, and since winning the Games seven years ago, this part of Russia has undergone a monumental transformation. However, the biggest transformation for this country is still yet to come. "In the same way that the city of Sochi has built a barrier free environment for athletes and officials to enjoy, I call upon all those who experience these Games to have barrier free minds, too." The Opening Ceremony began with 126 performers -- dressed in red, white and blue -- marching in perfectly synchronised formations to create dazzling patterns on the field of play and create a human wave of the Russian national flag. The actual flag was then carried into the centre of the stadium by eight people who have been instrumental in improving the lives of people with an impairment in Russia. The Pan-Russian Choir sang a captivating a cappella version of the Russian national anthem. Andree-Anne Gingras-Roy then played a glass organ that rose from underneath the stadium before 504 young ballerinas grace the stage to create patterns of snowflakes before forming the Paralympic Torch. Athletes competing paraded through the central ramp of the stadium, with woodland magic creatures and spirit birds guiding them to their seating area. Over the next nine days, these 547 athletes will compete for 72 sets of medals across five sports in what will be the first ever Paralympic Winter Games held in Russia. With 55 countries broadcast the Sochi 2014 Paralympics and Paralympic.org live streaming more than 300 hours of HD coverage, the Games are expected to break all viewing records and top athletes will become household names around the world. Sir Philip addressed the athletes, saying: "You have here superb sporting venues to express your amazing talents and live up to the Paralympic values of determination and courage, inspiration and equality. "Together you are the catalysts for change. United as one, you have the ability to change perceptions and alter attitudes like no other. "You arrive here as the best prepared athletes ever to attend a Paralympic Winter Games. "You will leave as role models, heroes, pioneers and most of all, Proud Paralympians." Dmitriy Chernyshenko, President and CEO of the Sochi 2014 Organising Committee, said: "Thanks to the Paralympic Games, a new era in the history of Russia has begun, one without barriers and stereotypes. The Paralympic Games have changed us; they have changed our attitude to those close to us and ourselves. Together, we are learning to be more considerate and attentive to each other." After the Paralympic Flag entered the stadium and the Paralympic Agitos was created by 126 performers, the Athletes' Oath was taken by Russian world champion alpine skier Valeriy Redkozubov, the Officials' Oath by skiing judge Elena Mokerova and the Coaches' Oath by Russian alpine skiing head coach Alexander Nazarov. Pop singer Yulia Samoylova entertained the crowd with their stunning vocals later on in the evening, as 300 ice fisherman painted patterns across the stage. IPC Honorary Board member and opera singer Maria Guleghina sang to the audience on a giant ship as passed through the entire stadium, signifying breaking down barriers and tracing new paths for mankind. The Ceremony culminated with a cast of more than 1,000 torchbearers celebrating the arrival of the Paralympic Torch in the stadium before it was lit by Vladykina and Shilov, and a spectacular fireworks display erupted across the Olympic Park.

Russia: Winter Olympic team unveil ‘neutral’ uniform
Russian Winter Olympic athletes’ new 'neutral' uniform for the upcoming PyeonChang Winter Games was presented to the press in Moscow, Tuesday. Designed by Russian outfit company ZASPORT, the colour scheme of the neutral outfit consists of grey, red and white, bearing no national symbols apart from a logo reading “Olympic Athlete of Russia," which has been printed on parkas, jackets, warm-up suits, sweatshirts and t-shirts. The athletes will receive two sets of equipment: a neutral uniform with the Olympic logo and a second uniform with the Russian national symbols in case the Russian athletes will be permitted to wear it at the final ceremony of the Games. Russian curler Anastasia Bryzgalova said she would prefer to wear the uniform with the national symbols, but that “overall, both of the uniforms are very comfortable." Sochi 2014 Winter Olympics - Trailer
The 2014 Olympic Winter Games will be the first time that the Russian Federation will have hosted the Winter Games; the Soviet Union hosted the 1980 Summer Games in Moscow. The host city Sochi has a population of 400,000 people and is situated in Krasnodar, which is the third largest region in Russia. The Games will be organised in two clusters: a coastal cluster for ice events in Sochi, and a mountain cluster located in the Krasnaya Polyana Mountains. This will make it one of the most compact Games ever, with around 30 minutes travel time from the coastal to mountain cluster. The Sochi Olympic Park will be built along the Black Sea coast in the Imeretinskaya Valley, where all the ice venues such as the Bolshoi Ice Palace, the Maly Ice Palace, the Olympic Oval, the Sochi Olympic Skating Centre, the Olympic Curling Centre, the Central Stadium, the Main Olympic Village and the International Broadcast Centre and Main Press Centre, will be built anew for the 2014 Games. The Park will ensure a very compact concept with an average distance of 6km between the Olympic Village and the other coastal venues. The mountain cluster in Krasnaya Polyana will be home to all the skiing and sliding sports. The mountain concept is again a very compact one with only an average distance of 4km between the mountain sub-village and the venues. There will also be a sub-media centre in the mountain cluster.
