It makes unwrapping a snap! In addition, I show how to create UVs even more quickly using Maya 2015's BONUS TOOLS! UV Mapping is necessary to convert a 3D object - like our character model - into a 2D shape, so that we can paint on it. In a way, the UV unwrapping process is akin to disassembling the character model. This same workflow should work for the new Maya LT 2016 release - Autodesk has added the Unfold 3D toolset to the program! Learn how we make characters move in isometric games! We look at both the foundations and the code in Godot. It's not exactly the same we use for isometric drawing, e.g. in industrial design. You'll see why we use a 2:1 ratio for the size of our base cells in the video. The function to convert cartesian coordinates to isometric ones takes only 2 lines of code: func cartesian_to_isometric(vector): return Vector2(vector.x - vector.y, (vector.x + vector.y) / 2) But it's not that easy to understand without some visual pointers. When a character moves in one direction in the isometric system, he always moves both on the X and Y axis in the game. That's where the complexity of isometric games come from: you have to manage the game data as if you were creating a top-down title, and you must then convert all the positions and motion vectors to render the characters and the levels properly. Compressing those images well improves streaming performance, video, dramatically reduces the size and download times of apps. It can give you more realistic virtual reality experiences, more apps that can run on a small mobile device, a better digital map of our world, it can reduce our impact on climate change through storage savings, and so much more. In the past few years, because of the rapid development in GPUs and innovations in algorithms, the way we approach texture compression has changed. Binomial is developing Basis, a supercompressed texture solution that will also provide an open file format standard in the graphics industry through The Khronos Group that's free for anyone to target. Basis is also written entirely in C++. All of the generation one PSP games shown here were run with 5x graphic and 4x texture up-scaling, and Full Screen Anti-Aliasing on PPSSPP, the Sony PSP emulator, on my PC. The video is not a game-play skill demo; it's more of a technical video showing what I view to be the 10 PSP games which look the best when played in Full HD. This is not my top 10 PSP games list, it's purely visual. The original resolution of the PSP was only 480x272, with some games rendered lower than that. Also, depending on the PSP model, the PSP 3000 for example, video can be interlaced vs progressive, which made many games look very grainy. Playing these games again on the PlayStation Vita, PPSSPP, or in the case of the PS3 "God of War: HD Collection" and PS3 "Metal Gear Solid: Peace Walker HD" versions is, in most cases, the nicest way to see these games at their very best. If there is a series, such as Tekken or Burnout, I picked the version which looked the best to me. I played Final Fantasy Crisis Core, Kingdom Hearts, Soul Calibur Broken Destiny, the entire PSP Need for Speed collection, Resistance Retribution and many others, and in most cases, when viewed objectively, the final games I chose held up the best overall to me. For example, in my upcoming Part 2 video, I choose Square Enix's "The 3rd Birthday" over "Crisis Core: Final Fantasy VII", because it has not only more impressive character models and lighting, but also more consistently detailed backgrounds overall. To avoid compromising any of my choices, when picking MotorStorm Arctic Edge, I found that as of now, on the latest PPSSPP builds, there are currently allot of speed issues, as well as a lack of in game sound effects once you get past all of the selection menus. I actually customized the PPSSPP source code just to get the sound and speed working properly enough to include it in my list. There is a PS2 version which runs in Full HD on PCSX2, the PlayStation 2 emulator, however even though it was a direct PSP port, it featured better lighting, added reflections and textures. As a result, it wouldn't have accurately portrayed what the PSP version looked like. Despite all of the PS2's visual additions though, the PSP had more bright and colorful stages and the game itself had more actual features like PSN friends list, etc. Lastly, all of the games are playable via an X-Box 360 or an X-Box One pad. I legally own, and have backed up all of the games to my PC. Royalty free YouTube music was used for any games with licensed soundtracks. Math - Sorting and Classifying Objects Game Kids Sorting and classifying are basic skills taught to children as part of preschool and kindergarten math programs. These activities require children to organize items into groups based on a common characteristic such as size, color, shape, texture, or flavor and also explain why they grouped the items as they did. Sorting and classifying are skills that a child will use in all areas of his life at home and in school as he puts away toys, organizes clothes, arranges a locker or empties the dishwasher, for example. Children first learn how to sort items. For example, a young child can likely separate a group of plastic figurines into two groups (vehicles and animals, perhaps) before he is able to state the distinction that cars have wheels and animals are living things. As children gain comfort sorting, they are encouraged to explain their thought process in sorting by identifying and naming the characteristic that determines the groups. Recognizing groups of objects requires logical thinking, an ability that will be important as your child makes other decisions. Also, understanding the relationship between the different groups and being able to discuss that relationship hones analytical skills. Unified Texture Management for Arbitrary Meshes

by Sylvain Lefebvre, Jérome Darbon and Fabrice Neyret (May 2004) Video games and simulators commonly use very detailed textures, whose cumulative size is often larger than the GPU memory. Textures may be loaded progressively, but dynamically loading and transferring this large amount of data in GPU memory results in loading delays and poor performance. Therefore, managing texture memory has become an important issue. While this problem has been (partly) addressed early for the specific case of terrain rendering, there is no generic texture management system for arbitrary meshes. We propose such a system, implemented on today's GPUs, which unifies classical solutions aimed at reducing memory transfer: progressive loading, texture compression, and caching strategies. For this, we introduce a new algorithm -- running on GPU -- to solve the major difficulty of detecting which parts of the texture are required for rendering. Our system is based on three components manipulating a tile pool which stores texture data in GPU memory. First, the Texture Load Map determines at every frame the appropriate list of texture tiles (i.e. location and MIP-map level) to render from the current viewpoint. Second, the Texture Cache manages the tile pool. Finally, the Texture Producer loads and decodes required texture tiles asynchronously in the tile pool. Decoding of compressed texture data is implemented on GPU to minimize texture transfer. The Texture Producer can also generate procedural textures. Our system is transparent to the user, and the only parameter that must be supplied at runtime is the current viewpoint. No modifications of the mesh are required. We demonstrate our system on large scenes displayed in real time. We show that it achieves interactive frame rates even in low-memory low-bandwidth situations. I've only recently started playing EVE Online and found myself being fascinated by those enormous spaceships. Thanks to a great piece of software called TriExporter, I was able to import these models into Maya and decided to render some Amarr ships as "miniatures" ;) For those not familiar with the metric system: 1 meter equals about 1 yard. 1 km equals about 0.6 miles. I may not have gotten all the colors right since I'm just beginning to play (and loving it btw) and won't encounter most of these ships until a few months in. Sadly, some of the textures that come with the game are a little low in terms of resolution (especially for the avatar) but I did my best to cover that up... Some of the shaders could use improvement but since this is just a quick set-up, and apart from the occasional flickering, it looks good enough for now.
