Listening Post - US newspaper industry - 19 Sep 08 - Part 2

09:33
The Listening Post's Robin Armstrong reports on the ailing US newspaper industry. This is a chronic affliction - both advertising revenue and readership are shrinking, and newspapers across the country are performing something of a disappearing act. Moreover, US newspapers have seen their share value drop more than any other sector in the media industry, papers are haemorrhaging staff. They are faced with a choice: either migrate to the internet, or die. The Listening Post goes to California, home of one of America's oldest and best-known titles, the San Francisco Chronicle, to see if the US newspaper industry is about to publish its own obituary. In Newsbytes, we look at a cartoon saga in South Africa; an inflammatory DVD about Islamic extremism; media coverage of the forthcoming Belarusian parliamentary elections; a tightening of the grip on the media in China and Russian PM, Vladimir Putin, who is said to be fuming that an exclusive interview with CNN was heavily edited. Closing our show with this week's Video of the Week is a quirky viral showing North Korea's Dear Leader Kim Jong Il as an animated video game character. Created by a German entertainment show, the video puts Jong Il through a Super Mario-like sequence, complete with hostile enemy countries and nuclear bombs. AMG Newspaper Evangelism

00:56
Newspaper Evangelism - Newspaper ads are an effective means to reach many with the Gospel message One of the most effective methods that AMG uses to spread the Gospel is newspaper evangelism. This method is particularly effective in predominantly Muslim, Hindu, and Buddhist countries. A newspaper enters many homes where Christians might never be allowed to enter.By placing gospel messages as paid advertisements in local newspapers around the world, we are able to give the good news of the gospel to hundreds of thousands of people who may have no other opportunity to learn about Christ. In some countries, we are able to boldly present the gospel and ask readers to respond if they want to know more. In other countries, where such ads would not be allowed, we often place a more general message such as: "Would you like to know real peace?" or "Are you lonely? Let us tell you about a friend who will never leave you." We send those who respond to these ads a Bible and Bible correspondence courses. We encourage respondents to begin attending church and to continue to study the Bible. It is our desire to make contact with people through the gospel ads, to develop a personal relationship through correspondence, then to win them to Christ through Bible study and one-on-one evangelism. Newspaper evangelism is a ministry approach which God has richly blessed. AMG has been using ads in Greek language newspapers and magazines since the 1950s. And since the mid-1970s, men and women of many nationalities have been learning the good news of Jesus Christ by reading about it in their own newspaper. Not only is this ministry far-reaching, it is also cost effective. Most newspapers and magazines are read thoroughly, enjoy wide distribution, and each issue is read by many. A single ad in a large newspaper or magazine can be read by thousands of people. People are the same everywhere. They all occasionally suffer from loneliness, anger, fear, and grief. In countries where the love of Christ is not known, these hurting people need a friend who will guide them to Christ and comfort them and give eternal hope. This is the goal of newspaper evangelism and the follow-up ministry. The cost of placing an ad in a newspaper or magazine varies from country to country. Any donation given to this ministry will reach lost people with the gospel message. For more information, visit amginternational.org

TEN DAYS IN BRITAIN - Oct 26th - Nov 4th

05:26
You only have to open the newspapers each day to see that what was once a great country is now a haven for third worlders and left wing nutters. True Brits are forgotten in today's Britain and are now second class citizens. Each week I will be creating a week in pictures. This video is the first and covers the main events of the past 10 days. The main aim is for my overseas friends. I would like to say I hope you all enjoy it but I know it will depress you as much as it depresses me. There is only one option for us in the UK and that is to support the British National Party, the only party that will put the people of Great Britain first. For those of you in other countries I urge you to look to your nationalist parties because this is by no means a British problem. What is happening here is happening to you also, especially our European neighbours. http://derbypatriot.blogspot.com/2009/11/ten-days-in-britain.html

South China Sea | China and North Korea Warn Japan as It Conducts Military Drills

05:02
✅ Top Stories Today - China and North Korea have warned their mutual rival Japan against disrupting regional stability as it conducted two historic military exercises seen as provocative by the two countries. The Japanese Defense Ministry confirmed Monday that its Oyashio-class attack submarine Kuroshio participated alongside Izumo-class helicopter carrier Kaga, Murasame-class destroyer Inazuma and Akizuki-class destroyer Suzutsuki, as well as five aircraft, Thursday in the country's debut drills in the South China Sea, much of which China claims as its own territory. The release did not offer further details about the training, but Japanese newspaper Asahi Shimbun cited defense officials as saying the moves were aimed at China and took place within the nine-dash line, which is considered by Beijing to be the extent of its sovereign maritime borders. Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson Geng Shuang replied to a reporter's question about the exercises that same day. He first touted the "stabilized" situation in the South China Sea, where China remains in talks with a number of Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) that dispute its region claims. Geng then issued a warning without mentioning Japan by name. ✅ Video/Thumbnail Picture just For Illustration ✅ What do you think of this video? English Vocabulary: How to talk about the economy

09:40
http://www.engvid.com Let's talk business! Today you'll learn vocabulary that will help you to read and speak about the economy. We will look at common words used to discuss economic matters, such as GDP, stagnation, fiscal, and more. These words and expressions will help you read financial news articles and follow economic reports on television and online. After the lesson, take the quiz and try to practice these words by discussing economic matters in English with your co-workers and friends. Feel free to ask me questions in the comments section on engVid. http://www.engvid.com/english-vocabulary-how-to-talk-about-the-economy/ TRANSCRIPT Hi. Welcome back to www.engvid.com. I'm Adam. Today's lesson, we're going to look at business English. We're going to talk about the economy. Now, we're not going to get into too much detail. We're not going to get into economic theories, etc. What we're going to look at is some vocabulary that will help you read financial articles and newspapers, or online, or watch financial broadcasts on TV; CNN, Money Matters, etc., things like that. So, we're going to look at all these words. We're going to start with "GDP" because everything somehow relates to "GDP - gross domestic product". What is this? This is the total value, the total monetary value of goods and services produced within a country. So everything that the country produces from toilet paper to airplanes, and services from massage to heart surgery, all the money that's made from these goods and services together adds up to the GDP. So, when we're talking about GDP, we're going to refer back to this expression when we're talking about some of these other words. So, first, let's look at "fiscal". "Fiscal" basically means anything to do with money, anything to do with financial matters, especially when we're talking about taxes. Okay? So, when... The most common thing you'll hear is "fiscal year". So when we're talking about a company's fiscal year, we're talking about it's the beginning of its tax year to the end of its tax year. In some countries, everybody matches this to January to December; in other countries, you're allowed... Your fiscal year starts when you start your business, and then one year later is the end of your fiscal year. It's easier to match it to the calendar year, but... A "quarter". Now, you're going to always hear about prices, and stocks, and values going up or down over the last quarter or over the last two quarters. What is a "quarter"? It's basically three months. So if you're talking about the first quarter of the year, you're talking about January, February, March. That's your first quarter. Your next three months, second quarter. Four quarters makes one year. "Currency". I think everybody knows this word, but just in case, this is the money that is used in a country or a region. This is the monetary value that is used for exchanges, trades, investments, etc. In Canada, we use the Canadian dollar. In the U.S., they use the American dollar. Euro in Europe, etc. A "budget". A "budget" or "to budget", it can be a noun or a verb, means to make a plan on how to spend a certain amount of money. So, for example, a government has this much money that they need to spend, or they have a plan that they want to spend this much money. Now, they want to spend a million dollars. I'm being very simple, here; I'm not going to get into big numbers. They need to spend a million dollars to provide all the services that they need and to buy all the materials that they need to import, etc. If they are running on a deficit, that means that they need to spend more money than they have. They have to spend on things to bring in or to run the country, but they don't have. So if I need to spend a million dollars but I only make the revenues of the country are only $900,000, then they will run on $100,000 deficit. Okay? "Surplus" is the opposite. "Surplus" is when the government or any company, you don't have to apply this to a government, when you have more money than you need for the budget. So if I need to spend a million dollars over the next year, but I have a million and a half, then I have half a million dollar surplus, which is always a good thing. "Inflation/deflation". "Inflation" is when prices of goods and services go up, but wages stay the same. So, basically, the purchase power of the individual goes down. You have the same amount of money, but you can buy fewer things or you can hire fewer people to do to have services for you. "Deflation" is the opposite. That's when prices go down, and the value of your dollar or your currency goes up. Both situations are not good.

Dirty Truth of Indian News Channels EXPOSED by Abhishek Mishra

"We use to laugh at comedians and listen to politicians. Now we laugh at politicians and listen to comedians. The same goes with our Great Indian Media." Watch and share for others. In this video I explained how our great Indian Media Channels like Aaj Tak, India TV, News 24, ABP News, Times now, NDTV, Zee News have relationship with political parties. They take money from parties and show biased news. I recommends common peoples to watch DD news and to unsubscribe newspapers like Times of India which only sell ads not news. ________________ About Abhishek, Abhishek Mishra is an Indian social activist, YouTuber and a common man who wants a better country. Asia Rising: The Story of China and India 2

09:56
The print, electronic and broadcast media in Asia are doing better than ever before. More and more newspapers and magazines are sprouting in countries such as India, China and Malaysia. Also TV channels are broadcasting to viewers from around the world, plus radio stations have been flourishing for the past few years. This is in dramatic contrast to developments in the West -- particularly the United States -- where the twinned phenomenon of media mergers and a migration of readers to the Web has resulted in a decline of media empires. Newspapers seem to be shutting down almost weekly; advertisers and sponsors are favoring high-traffic Web sites. Which English-language newspaper has the largest circulation in the world? The Times of India. Which non-English language newspaper sells millions of copies daily? Japans Asahi Shimbun, and Manorama Malayalam in Kerala, followed closely by the Chinese-language edition of the Worker's Daily. Which magazine has mushroomed into one of the worlds largest media conglomerates? India Today. These and other media outlets are also paying more attention to the Middle East, particularly to the Gulf countries that supply oil to satisfy the seemingly limitless thirst of China and India in their drive toward accelerated economic growth. Topics: •What kind of media -- print, electronic, TV, radio -- haves grown in recent years in China and India? •What explains this growth? What drives demand? •Beyond literacy, what are the factors that explain the deepening craving for media products? A thirst for news? Education? Entertainment? Analysis? •While Asia's two big emerging economies -- India and China -- have had varying degrees of Western colonial experience, how are they able to culturally sustain the presence of Western media input in their economies? •What about the regional media in Asian countries? We ordinarily tend to look at English-language media, but regional-language media are growing rapidly. What explains this? •Are some Asian societies more receptive to media scrutiny than others? Why? I have written over 2,000 articles on medical research for the Swedish medical journal Läkartidningen and several other newspapers, as well as two books that have been sold in 12 countries. My latest bestselling book “The real happy pill”, due to be published in the US, China and several other countries during 2017, concerns how physical activity affects the brain. India’s purchase of S-400 could be a mistake British Media

07:09
If you had picked up a British newspaper on 5 September you would have found two faces staring at you. One was Alexander Petrov, according to his Russian passport, the other Ruslan Boshirov. Both are believed to be false names, as British intelligence has linked them to the GRU, Russia’s secretive military intelligence organisation. Both are believed to have been trained in assassination and espionage. British police and intelligence services claim to have sufficient evidence to charge Petrov and Boshirov with the attempted murder of the former Russian spy, Sergei Skripal and his daughter Yulia, using Novichok. Appearing in a comically unbelievable interview on Russian Television this week, Petrov and Boshirov claimed that they were civilians and simply visitors to Salisbury, but did not explain why their visit took them close to Skripal’s house just hours before they were found unconscious. President Vladimir Putin also denied any involvement by Russia, but perhaps forgot an earlier interview when he said darkly that being a traitor was “bad for your health”. It certainly was for the Skripals. How should the free world respond to a country which acts in such a gung-ho manner, tossing aside well-established conventions? Initially, more than two dozen countries were persuaded by Britain’s compelling evidence and expelled a total of 150 Russian spies working under diplomatic cover. Then America and the EU added to the list of sanctions against Russia on the basis that it had “used chemical weapons in violation of international law”. Sanctions against Russia have become the weapon of choice by the West, but they are a blunt instrument with complex side-effects for third parties. None more so than India. For example, in August 2017 a reluctant President Donald Trump signed into law the Countering America’s Adversaries Through Sanctions Act (CAATSA), as a result of Russia’s “unacceptable behaviour in the use of chemical weapons, the annexation of Crimea and its interference in the 2016 US presidential elections”. In effect, this law makes it extremely difficult for India to contract with both Russia and America for arms purchases, unless America issues a “waiver” from CAATSA. There’s another effect of US sanctions, which is unique to India. As Defence Minister Nirmala Sitharaman reminded Washington recently, India has an enduring relationship with Russia going back decades. Historically, India’s trade with Russia has flourished when Russia’s relationships with China have soured. Trade increased six-fold in the 1960s and 70s during Russia/Sino tensions, a great example of the ancient proverb “the enemy of my enemy is my friend”. Nowadays, the aggressive sanctions by the West against Russia are pushing President Putin towards China, a move which is changing the geopolitical dynamics in Asia. If you don’t believe me, look no further than Vostok 2018, the major military exercise currently taking place on Russia’s eastern border. Unprecedentedly, Beijing is contributing 3,200 soldiers, 900 tanks and 30 jets to Vostok 2018, a move which must have created a severe headache in New Delhi. Russia has also delivered to China its first batch of the impressive S-400 mobile surface-to-air (SAM) system. India has been negotiating with Russia over several years for exactly this system. So, in the light of both the dramatic geopolitical change in Asia and the possible sanctions against Russia, should contracts be signed for the S-400, rumoured to take place next month during the summit between Prime Minister Narendra Modi and President Putin? I believe that there is now a strong argument for India to change direction and build up its arms purchases from the US. The announcement in 2017 that the US would sell India 22 predator Guardian drones, a contract worth $2-3 billion, is a great example. A delighted President Trump declared India to be a “major defence partner”. This year the US announced that the armed version of the drone would be authorised for India, a first for any country outside NATO. It gets better. Why I escaped from my brainwashed country | Hyeonseo Lee | TEDxKyoto

13:58
North Korean defector, Hyeonseo Lee opens her own life and losses to the world in order to illuminate a human rights tragedy that has for too long rested in the shadows. Great or small, our losses stay with us, unshakeable even as we grow beyond them. Hyeonseo Lee knows about loss. A North Korean defector, Hyeonseo once thought her country the best on earth. In 1995 her beliefs and life were shattered as the truths of famine, death and brutality crashed upon her. Her survival depended on her ability to escape North Korea to restart her life, but at a high price̶the loss of her family, home and country. Since escaping North Korea, Hyeonseo has risen to be a powerful voice for human rights, speaking in front of the UN Security Council and sharing her story and the plight of North Korean refugees across the world through speaking engagements and written articles featured in major newspapers, magazines and journals. By opening her own life and losses to the world, Hyeonseo Lee has helped illuminate a human rights tragedy that has for too long rested in the shadows, and along the way, has transformed loss into the promise of hope. A Simple Question - British revolution

24:48
The 5th of November is Guy Fawkes Night, the night on which Fawkes guarded the explosives beneath the House of Lords, ready for an assassination of the King. It was a missed revolution in a country that has been involved in starting revolutions in other countries. British historians, and recently newspapers, have long reported the country's dispatches of secret weapons consignments to foreign anti-government militants and terrorists, including anti-tank missiles and rocket-propelled grenade launchers. Some reports concluded that some consignments in Syria for example were large enough to arm over 1,000 terrorists and that they are accessible within hours. Britain is renowned for its history of divide and conquer policies, but how would it react if the same happened on its own streets?

The British Royal Family: Everything you need to know

28:52
Interested in the UK and the British Royal Family? Don't know who all these dukes and duchesses are? In this lesson, I'll explain how the British monarchy works. You'll learn about the members and titles of the royal family, the history of monarchy in the UK, and how our constitutional monarchy works. I'll answer questions like: What is the queen's job? Why is there no king right now, even though Queen Elizabeth II has a husband? Who will inherit the throne?... and more. Watch this lesson to understand the royal family and the culture of monarchy in the UK. TAKE THIS QUIZ TO TEST YOUR KNOWLEDGE: https://www.engvid.com/british-royal-family/ TRANSCRIPT Hello. I'm Gill at engVid, and today's lesson is all about the British Royal Family. Okay, so if you probably see items in the news about our royal family, you'll have seen the queen, Queen Elizabeth; maybe her husband, Prince Philip; but they're a big family, and also not all countries have a royal family so I've just put this lesson together with a bit of information to tell you a little bit more about them. Okay, right, so the British Royal Family are also known as the House of Windsor, because Windsor is their name, which comes from Windsor. This place here, Windsor Castle is one of their homes. So years ago they decided to use the name Windsor. So, some people like the royal family, admire them. They think of them as kind of celebrities, just like film stars, and sports celebrities. They're reported in the newspapers in a similar way. You get gossip about them. In some newspapers who like to write a lot of gossip, if they've heard something, it may not be accurate, but they've heard a story about some member of the royal family, and they print the story. They might have a photograph to go with it. So they're always in the news, the royal family, for one reason or another, either a good reason or a bad reason. Pretty much every day you can hear something about the royal family or read something in the newspaper. So, some people do like them, and even, you know, think of them as celebrities, and maybe give too much time and thought to them. But then at the other extreme, some people dislike them because they're thinking of the fact that they spend a lot of money, they have all these buildings which are expensive to look after, people say: "What work do they do?" They don't seem to do any work, so why should they live such rich lives if they don't do anything? But, of course, a lot of the royal family do things all the time. They're not working for money always, sometimes they do that as well, they have jobs some of them with a salary, but some of them, they may not be working and being paid for it, but they're doing kind of diplomatic work, they're meeting visitors from other countries, they're being kind of ambassadors, that sort of thing. So they keep busy, and they're patrons of charities and they go to events, and they give their support to things and so on. So, a lot of the royal family do keep quite busy trying to live useful lives, and so I think if they didn't do that there would be a lot more sort of criticism of them. But because you can't see that they're doing things, working hard, that stops a lot of people from criticizing and saying we shouldn't have a royal family. Some people are called Republicans, and they say we should have a president instead of a queen or a king. We should have a president and a prime minister instead of a queen and a prime minister. So there are Republicans around and have been for more than a hundred years, people who wanted to get rid of the royal family, but it hasn't happened yet. Okay, so the kind of system we have in the UK, it's called a constitutional monarchy. The "monarchy" part is to do with the royal family, with the queen. The monarch, so the word "monarch" means king or queen. The "constitutional" part is to do with politics, and the government, and parliament. So what happens, really, is the government, the MPs, the ministers in parliament, they make the decisions. The government makes the decisions. And if they have a new piece of, an act of parliament, a new law, for example, the queen just has to sign it. If it's been democratically decided already by the politicians that this will become law, the queen can't just say: "No, I don't like that. I'm not going to sign it." She just has to sign it because it's gone through a democratic process. So that's why it's a constitutional monarchy. It's the monarch or king or queen governed by the parliament, by the politicians. Okay. So, let's have a look at some of the vocabulary which is fairly simple most of it. So a king or queen is the monarch, the head of state if you like. Usually any children they have will be prince or princess, so prince for male, princess of female. There are some other titles used as well, which are sort of high aristocratic titles. Duke for the male, duchess for the female.
Christopher Hitchens: American Intervention in the Middle East - Foreign Policy, Economy (1998)

01:20:06
Afghanistan and Pakistan, though situated in Asia, are considered part of the Greater Middle East. U.S. intervention in both Afghanistan and Pakistan started with the Carter Administration after the Soviet invasion of Afghanistan. Hitchens' books: https://www.amazon.com/gp/search?ie=UTF8&tag=tra0c7-20&linkCode=ur2&linkId=7d003f18a0506229f225ec2f864ae762&camp=1789&creative=9325&index=books&keywords=hitchens The relations of the U.S. with Afghanistan and Pakistan have been closely tied to the War on terrorism that has happened there. American policy has been instrumental in coordinating the ongoing conflicts in Afghanistan and northwestern Pakistan. In recent times, political situations of both countries have been bracketed under a single theater of operations, denoted by the newly coined American term "AfPak." http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/American_intervention_in_the_Middle_East Sudan -- United States relations are extremely complicated, both politically and economically. China is critical of Sudan's human rights record and has sent a strong UN Peacekeeping force to Darfur. Many Sudanese, both civilians and Government officials say that the interference of the U.S. and other Western nations in Darfur and against leader Omar al-Bashir is part of a covert plot to throw their country in economic (since business relations between the two have been defunct since 1997), governmental, and territorial unrest. U.S. relations with Sudan were further strained in the 1990s. Sudan backed Iraq in its invasion of Kuwait and provided sanctuary and assistance to Islamic terrorist groups. In the early and mid-1990s, Carlos the Jackal, Osama bin Laden, Abu Nidal, and other terrorist leaders resided in Khartoum. Sudan's role in the radical Pan-Arab Islamic Conference represented a matter of great concern to the security of American officials and dependents in Khartoum, resulting in several drawdowns and/or evacuations of U.S. personnel from Khartoum in the early-mid 1990s. Sudan's Islamist links with international terrorist organizations represented a special matter of concern for the U.S. Government, leading to Sudan's 1993 designation as a state sponsor of terrorism and a suspension of U.S. Embassy operations in Khartoum in 1996. In October 1997, the U.S. imposed comprehensive economic, trade, and financial sanctions against the Sudan. In August 1998, in the wake of the East Africa embassy bombings, the U.S. launched cruise missile strikes against Khartoum. The last U.S. Ambassador to the Sudan, Ambassador Tim Carney, departed post prior to this event and no new ambassador has been designated since. The U.S. Embassy is headed by a charge d'affaires. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sudan%E2%80%93United_States_relations Cyprus -- United States relations are bilateral relations between Cyprus and the United States. Cyprus has an embassy in Washington, D.C. and a consulate general in New York City. The United States has an embassy in Nicosia. Relations between the two countries can be described as being excellent, both sharing membership in the United Nations, International Monetary Fund, the Organization for Security and Co-operation in Europe, the World Bank and the World Trade Organisation. Cyprus has been an observer to the Organization of American States.[1] According to the 2012 U.S. Global Leadership Report, 26% of Cypriots approve of U.S. leadership, with 35% disapproving and 39% uncertain. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cyprus%E2%80%93United_States_relations Image By Artur Andrychowski (originally posted to Flickr as 3B) [CC-BY-SA-2.0 (http://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/2.0)], via Wikimedia Commons

🇳🇮 Nicaragua's Great Divide - TechKnow

23:44
Nicaragua is the second poorest country in the Americas, second only to Haiti. Poverty is rampant and easily witnessed on its streets. The dream of building a trans-Nicaragua canal connecting the Atlantic and the Pacific has been around for centuries, but despite prospects for economic growth, the latest China-backed canal project in Nicaragua is dividing the nation. The proposed Nicaragua Canal Project presents a classic trade-off between economic development and the protection of natural resources to the country. In this case, it is Lake Cocibolca (also known as Lake Nicaragua), the largest lake in Central America and a source of drinking water to thousands of Nicaraguans, that is in danger. In my legal opinion, it is completely evident that the canal law is against the constitution. Monica Lopez Baltodano, environmental attorney, Popol Na On the Pacific side, the coastal town of Gigante relies on the sea for its basic needs. This is set to change if the canal project goes through, as Gigante will serve as the Pacific port entrance. However, the less fortunate - in spite of the lack of information available to them - continue to embrace the project as a potential means to escape poverty. They have been promised a change and more opportunities as a result - but this is without knowing the consequences. Monica Lopez Baltodano, who is an environmental attorney and director of the Popol Na Foundation, an organisation which looks after local civil rights, sees the canal project as one of the biggest threats to local communities. She warns of the dangers of how the fallout for local resources will affect Nicaraguans. "They sell people dreams, that a huge investment like this is going to change completely the economical system in Nicaragua, and the poverty in Nicaragua ... it's completely unreal. It doesn't work that way," says Baltodano about the way in which President Daniel Ortega's government has sold the project to the desperate public. With most of the mainstream media consumed by everyday Nicaraguans completely controlled by Ortega's government too, the legal battle ahead for Baltodano and Popol Na is long and uncertain. Salvador Montenegro-Guillen is one of Nicaragua's leading scientists, a professor of ecology and limnology who was once the director of the Center for Research in Water Resources of Nicaragua. He echoes Baltodano's sentiments and voices his own concerns about the importance of the lake. "Lake Cocibolca is actually the jewel of the crown for this country because no other body of water has the quality and quantity of this lake," he says. As scientists continue their research to try to rescue the lake, one thing has become apparent - the technical and, in due effect, environmental effects of digging the canal will bring irreparable damage to Lake Cocibolca. Local newspaper Confidencial even took a depth finder through the proposed course of the canal to find that most of the distance across the lake was just too shallow for the purposes of the project. "That means that they would have to dig up 20 metres, almost. How are they going to get the sediments out [of the water], where are they going to put it? What does that mean for the lake? There needs to be more studies done," says Katherine Vammen, a microbiologist and research scientist at the University of Central America. When it comes down to a pros and cons debate, Monica Lopez Baltodano fears the worst. "To risk all of our most valuable resources, affecting more than 119,000 people, just to get 25,000 jobs for a small period of time ... it doesn't make any sense at all. And I worry that we are putting all of our future at risk by destroying Nicaragua's lake," she says. Could the project change the fortunes of Nicaragua or ruin the country's most environmentally sensitive areas? TechKnow went to Nicaragua to look at Nicaragua's canal project and the potential fallout. - Subscribe to our channel: http://aje.io/AJSubscribe - Follow us on Twitter: https://twitter.com/AJEnglish - Find us on Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/aljazeera - Check our website: http://www.aljazeera.com/

Why Journalism Is Important: Christopher Hitchens on Media (1998)

01:12:52
Edward S. Herman and Noam Chomsky proposed a concrete model for the filtering processes (biases) of mainstream media, especially in the United States, called the propaganda model. More Hitchens: https://www.amazon.com/gp/search?ie=UTF8&tag=tra0c7-20&linkCode=ur2&linkId=2cbca0f69ec03773fbee6daea2c13341&camp=1789&creative=9325&index=books&keywords=hitchens They tested this empirically and presented extensive quantified evidence supporting the model. Communication scholar Robert W. McChesney, inspired in part by the work of Chomsky and Herman, has linked the failures of the mainstream press primarily to corporate ownership, pro-corporate public policy, and the myth of "professional journalism." He has published extensively on the failures of the mainstream press, and advocates scholarship in the study of the political economy of the media, the growth of alternative media, and comprehensive media policy reforms. Ben Bagdikian has also written about the takeover of biased media, with particular attention to the giant conglomerates that own them. He argues that because five large conglomerates own the majority of American media, politics and general media influence in America are in jeopardy. Whereas some alternative media theorists (e.g., Chris Atton) propose broad definitions of media alterity, parecon theorist and Z Magazine cofounder Michael Albert incorporates the politico-economic critique of mainstream media into his definition of alternative media. In answering the question "What makes alternative media alternative?" he suggests that alternative media institutions should feature an anti-corporate structure, not just alternative media content. Along these lines, Albert has criticized publications such as The Nation and the Village Voice for replicating corporate hierarchies and divisions of labor.[12] While the Propaganda Model resonates in productive ways with the way in which media systems have developed in the United States context, this theory might fall short in describing the situation in nations outside of the American context. The Propaganda Model would have a hard time explaining nations with a weak communications infrastructure (somewhere like Zimbabwe), heavily funded and state sponsored public broadcasting television stations (such as Australia), or with a strong tradition of partisan print and televised journalism. The alternative press consists of printed publications that provide a different or dissident viewpoint than that provided by major mainstream and corporate newspapers, magazines, and other print media. Factsheet Five publisher Mike Gunderloy described the alternative press as "sort of the 'grown-up' underground press. Whole Earth, the Boston Phoenix, and Mother Jones are the sorts of things that fall in this classification." In contrast, Gunderloy described the underground press as "the real thing, before it gets slick, co-opted, and profitable. The underground press comes out in small quantities, is often illegible, treads on the thin ice of unmentionable subjects, and never carries ads for designer jeans." An example of alternative media is tactical media, which uses 'hit-and-run' tactics to bring attention to an emerging problem. Often tactical media attempts to expose large corporations that control sources of mainstream media. One prominent NGO dedicated to tactical media practices and info-activism is the Tactical Technology Collective which assists human rights advocates in using technology. They have released several toolkits freely to the global community, including NGO In A Box South Asia, which assists in the setting up the framework of a self-sustaining NGO, Security-In-A-Box, a collection of software to keep data secure and safe for NGOs operating in potentially hostile political climates, and their new short form toolkit 10 Tactics, which "... provides original and artful ways for rights advocates to capture attention and communicate a cause". In many countries around the world, specific categories of radio stations are licensed to provided targeted broadcasts to specific communities, including community radio and low-power FM (LPFM). Such stations typically broadcast with less wattage than commercial or public/state-run broadcasters, and are often non-commercial and non-profit in nature. In the United States, a special class of stations known as low-power FM (LPFM) stations were first authorized by the U.S. Federal Communications Commission (FCC) in January 2000. These stations are authorized to provide non-commercial, educational broadcasting and cannot operate with an effective radiated power of more than 100 watts. LPFM services were authorized to meet the increasing demand which existed in the United States for the creation of new, hyper-local radio outlets that would be grounded in their respective communities. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Alternative_media

SOUNDBITE: (Farsi) Idin Mehralizadeh, Tehran resident: "When somebody offers talks the other side should accept it. The American government is like a snake and it might hurt Iran at anytime." 14. Street scene with American flag painted on wall STORYLINE: There were varying reactions in Tehran on Thursday to the Bush administration's announcement that it is willing to join other countries for face-to-face talks with Iran offering economic incentives if it suspends nuclear activities that could produce a bomb. Alongside the economic incentives is the threat of economic penalties if Iran fails to comply. Several newspaper headlines in Tehran focused on the issue on Thursday. One Tehran resident said, "I think it was a positive move (by Americans) to start talks with Iran although they have not offered any ideas to be discussed during the possible negotiations." Another Tehran resident had a contrasting opinion; "our government should not trust the Americans because a wise man will not be beaten from the same snake twice. The American government is like a snake and it might hurt Iran at anytime." The latest US shift came with pressure growing on the Bush administration from European allies and others to talk directly to Iran. It also came on the eve of a six-nation meeting in Vienna, Austria, focused on ending months of disagreement between the United States and Russia on how to persuade Iran to stop uranium enrichment, which can make fuel for nuclear power reactors or the fissile core of warheads. The US offer is conditioned on Iran suspending its enrichment of uranium and related activities and allowing inspections to prove it. European nations and the Security Council have demanded the same thing, but Iran has refused to comply. The foreign ministers or their equivalents of the United States, China, Russia, France and Britain, the permanent Security Council nations, plus Germany hope to approve the incentives Thursday in Vienna. They also will consider tough council penalties, including possible sanctions, if Iran remains defiant. Indian Street Food, Masala dosa, Paper Masala Dosa, South Indian Food, Dosa, Street food in Vietnam

09:57
INDIAN STREET FOOD, MASALA DOSA, PAPER DOSA, INDIAN CUISINE, INDIAN FOOD, Asian Street Food, Dosa or Masale Dose is a variant of the popular South Indian Food, dosa. It is made from rice, lentils, potato, methi, curry leaves and served with chutneys and sambar. Though it was only popular in South India,[2] it can be found in all other parts of the country[3] and overseas. In South India preparation of masala dosa varies from city to city.[ Masala dosa was ranked number 4 on the list of '10 foods to try before you die', compiled by US newspaper The Huffington Post.Masala dosa is stuffed dosa. There are two parts: the dosa and the stuffing. The dosa is made in the usual way by soaking rice and lentils overnight in water and then grinding it to a batter. The fermented batter is used to make dosa. The stuffing is made from boiled potatoes with a seasoning of mustard seeds and garnishing of grated coconut, coriander, and lemon juice. Ingredients[ Rice, husked black gram, mustard seeds, fenugreek seeds, salt, vegetable oil, potatoes, onion, green chillies, curry leaves, turmeric. Dosa is a fermented crepe made from rice batter and black lentils. It is a staple dish in South Indian states of Tamil nadu, Andhra Pradesh, Karnataka, Kerala and Telangana. It is also popular in other parts of India, and other countries like Sri Lanka, Mauritius, Myanmar, Nepal, Bangladesh, Malaysia and Singapore. History Dosa is indigenous to South India; its exact birthplace in that region is a matter of conjecture.According to food historian K. T. Achaya, dosa (as dosai) was already in use in ancient Tamil country around the 1st century AD, as per references in the Sangam literature.[2] According to P. Thankappan Nair, dosa originated in the Udupi town of present-day Karnataka. In popular tradition, the origin of dosa is linked to Udupi, probably because of the dish's association with the Udupi restaurants.[1] Also, the original Tamil dosa was softer and thicker. The thinner and crispier version of dosa, which became popular all over India, was first made in present-day Karnataka.[ A recipe for dosa (as dosaka) can be found in Manasollasa, a 12th century Sanskrit encyclopedia compiled by Someshvara III, who ruled from present-day Karnatak Dosa making A mixture of rice and urad dal (ulundu) that has been soaked in water is ground finely to form a batter. The proportion of rice to lentils is basically 4:1 or 5:1. The batter is allowed to ferment overnight. After the overnight fermentation, batter is mixed with water to get the desired thickness. the batter is then ladled onto a hot tava (griddle) greased with oil or ghee (clarified butter). It is spread out evenly with the base of a ladle or bowl to form a pancake. A dosa is served hot, either folded in half or rolled like a wrap. It is also served usually with chutney and sambar. The mixture of urad dal and rice can be replaced with highly refined wheat flour or semolina. Dosa can be stuffed with fillings of vegetables and sauces to make a quick meal. They are typically served with a vegetarian side dish which varies according to regional and personal preferences. Common side items are: Sambar Wet chutney: examples include coconut chutney (a semisolid paste made up of coconut, dal (lentils), green chilli and mint or coriander) Dry chutney (podi): a powder of spices and desiccated coconut Indian pickles. 1 1/2 cups rice 1/2 cup urad dal salt to taste Oil Masala Filling: 2 large potatoes 1 medium onion (chopped) 1/2 teaspoon yellow split peas 1/2 teaspoon mustard seed 1/2 teaspoon turmeric 1-2 green chili 1 tablespoon oil salt to taste Preparation: Dosa shell Separately soak rice and urad dal at least 6 hour or overnight in water. Grind to paste. Mix together, add salt with water to make batter. Leave in room temperature overnight. Mix onion and chilies to the thin batter. Heat pan or griddle with little ghee or oil. Spread the mix on pan in circular motion to make thin Dosa. Cook on both the sides, if desired. Masala Filling (Spicy Filling): Heat oil. Add mustard seed, peas, onions and spice. Fry for about 5 minut. Indian Street Food, Masala dosa, Paper Masala Dosa, Asian Street Food. भारतीय व्यंजनों, भारतीय खाद्य

While in school, Zell managed a 15 unit apartment building in return for free room-and-board. Joined by his fraternity brother Robert H. Lurie, he won a contract with a large apartment development owner in Ann Arbor. He and Lurie were managing over 4,000 apartments and owned 100-200 units outright. After school, he sold his interest in the management company to Lurie and moved to Chicago. After graduation, he worked as a lawyer for one week before deciding that the profession was not for him. In 1968, Zell founded the predecessor of Equity Group Investments and was joined a year later by his former partner, Robert Lurie. Equity Group Investments was the genesis for three of the largest public real estate companies in history. Zell has created a number of public and private companies in various other industries. In January 2008, Zell bought a controlling share in the Tribune Company, owner of the Chicago Tribune, among other newspapers. ✔ SOURCES ✔ [Brad Keywell] - Building Businesses and Carving Your Own Path - https://youtu.be/gMyjQW_hJAU [IDC Herzliya] - Bar Mitzvah event - https://youtu.be/y94KmH8r36s [Investors Archive] - Real Estate Investment Philosophy - https://youtu.be/gMB-FHnlKKI [Bloomberg] The 1% Work Harder and Should Be Emulated - https://youtu.be/I96LY6x3FKw Zell Discusses Tribune's Emergence From Bankruptcy - https://youtu.be/ZpqBJIR4I5A [Edward Padgett] - Sam Zell Visits the Los Angeles Times - https://youtu.be/yxZRq2hiS-w [Entrepreneur] - Brazen Career Choices - https://youtu.be/S8ZsYMHRBvk [UCLA] - Sam Zell & Judy Olian, Hammer Conversations - https://youtu.be/xH3LxFnEVXo ♛ BUY MY BOOK, CHANGE YOUR LIFE ♛ Some used the ideas in this book to build multi-billion-dollar businesses. Best medical collage in the world

Best medical collage in the world.Every year, colleges and universities are ranked by U.S. News and World Report. For medical schools, the magazine has two categories: research schools, which focus on training medical professionals to work on creating cures and understanding diseases and conditions, and primary care schools, those attached to large hospitals where students are trained for direct interactions with patients. The top ten research schools are generally considered the best in the world. In 2010, no schools outside of the United States were ranked in the top ten.College and university rankings are rankings of institutions in higher education ordered by various combinations of various factors. Rankings have most often been conducted by magazines, newspapers, websites, governments, or academics. In addition to ranking entire institutions, organizations perform rankings of specific programs, departments, and schools. Various rankings consider combinations of measures of wealth, research excellence and/or influence, selectivity, student options, eventual success, demographics, and other criteria. There are no known college rankings of student academic quality. Some rankings evaluate institutions within a single country, while others assess institutions worldwide. The subject has produced much debate about rankings' usefulness and accuracy. The expanding diversity in rating methodologies and accompanying criticisms of each indicate the lack of consensus in the field. 1 Harvard University United States 2 University of Oxford United Kingdom 3 University of Cambridge United Kingdom 4 Stanford University United States 5 Johns Hopkins University United States 6 University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA) United States 7 University of California, San Francisco (UCSF) United States 8 Yale University United States 9 UCL (University College London) United Kingdom 10 Karolinska Institute Sweden

That’s the day 17.4 million people in the United Kingdom voted to become the first country to leave the European Union. This is the story of Brexit. We begin 60 years ago. After World Wars I and II had brought unprecedented death and destruction to the continent, a simple theory gained traction: if countries form stronger economic ties, they’ll be much less likely to fight each other. So, in 1957, Belgium, France, Italy, Luxembourg, Netherlands, and West Germany signed the Treaty of Rome and formed the European Economic Community. The UK wasn’t included. It tried to join in 1963 and ‘67, but was blocked by French President Charles de Gaulle. De Gaulle didn’t trust the British and their close allies, the United States, although de Gaulle’s official reason was that the UK’s economy wasn’t compatible with Europe’s. A few years later, once de Gaulle was out of power, the UK became a member of the EEC in 1973. But not everyone was sold on the idea. So, just two years after joining, the UK held its first ever national referendum to decide whether it should turn around and leave. The vote wasn’t close, 67% of the electorate chose to stay. In the years since, the EEC has become known as the European Union, expanded to 28 member states, and enacted countless laws and reforms that have created a thriving political and economic zone with 500 million citizens. In many ways it was designed to mirror the world’s most successful federal republic: the United States. Just like the American colonies had done two centuries earlier, the individual countries of Europe decided they’d be better off - economically, geopolitically - if they formed a unified group. It was a good decision. For proof, look no further than the year-by-year, per-person GDP rate, which has skyrocketed across the entire euro-zone. Germany, the UK, and France, the EU’s biggest economies and the 4th, 5th, and 6th largest individual economies in the world, have seen their growth track right along with each other at roughly the rate of the United States. A look at the emerging economies of Brazil, China, and South Africa gives you a better sense of just how closely the Europeans have tracked together. Look at Turkey — who wants desperately to join the union — compared to Portugal, Italy, Greece, and Spain the four EU countries most affected by the global downturn at the end of the previous decade, and you see more evidence of the power of the EU in driving growth. As it has became more and more integrated — as its members chose to give up more and more of their sovereignty — the UK kept negotiating ways to stay independent from key aspects of the union. It didn’t join the open border that the rest of the EU created in 1995 to create completely free movement within the union, and it chose to keep the British pound as its currency instead of adopting the Euro. But the development that made the UK’s eventual exit most likely was the adoption of the Lisbon Treaty in 2009. Not only did it make the EU’s central institutions more efficient and more powerful, but — for the first time — it gave its members an official mechanism to leave, called Article 50. At around the same time, the world was hit by a severe recession. Greece, whose public debt was far higher than most other EU members, was worse off. Its fellow union members forced it to implement severe spending cutbacks in exchange for money it needed to stabilize its economy. This was followed by a migrant crisis, as millions of refugees fled war-torn countries across the Middle East and North Africa. As immigration rates rose across Europe, the preferred destination was one of the big three economies: Germany, the UK, or France...

It is no secret that the Obama administration has pushed for more drone strikes abroad, and during the Obama presidency the battle tactic has been on the rise. But one thing that has been kept secret for the last two years is a key US drone base in Saudi Arabia. According to reports, several key media outlets were aware of the base but refused to report on it per the government's request. Russ Baker, editor-in-chief for WhoWhatWhy.com, gives us his take on the agreement between the mainstream media and the Obama administration to keep the base a secret. 7 Secrets of the Millionaire Mind (T. Harv Eker Interview)

53:29
T Harv Eker is a new york times best selling author of the secrets of the millionaire mind and the founder of millionaire mindset intensive. Using the principles he teaches, T. Harv Eker went from zero to millionaire in only 2 1/2 years! He combines a unique brand of ‘street-smarts with heart'. Eker's high-energy, ‘cut-to-the-chase' style keeps his audience spellbound. T. Harv Eker's motto is "talk is cheap" and his unique ability is getting people to take "action" in the real world to produce real success. Eker is the author of the best-selling books, Secrets of the Millionaire Mind and SpeedWealth. He has also developed several highly-acclaimed courses such as The Millionaire Mind Intensive, Life Directions, Wizard Training and Train the Trainer. He is also the producer and trainer of the world-famous Enlightened Warrior Training. T. Harv Eker is the son of European immigrants who came to North America with only thirty dollars to their name. He grew up in Toronto, but spent most of his adult years in the United States. Money was scarce throughout his childhood, so at thirteen, Eker began his work career. As a teen he delivered newspapers, scooped ice cream, sold novelties at fairs, and suntan lotions at the beach. After a year at York University, he decided to take time off to pursue his dream of becoming a millionaire. During his early adult years, he lived in five different cities, including Lake Tahoe and Ft. Lauderdale. He had a variety of jobs and started more than a dozen different businesses, but regardless of what he did, or how hard he worked, he just couldn't achieve success. Finally after many years of frustration, Eker hit the jackpot. He opened one of the first retail fitness stores in North America and grew the business to ten stores in only two and a half years. He then sold part of the company to a Fortune 500 corporation. With the sale, Eker reached his dream. He was finally a millionaire; however, in less than two years, the money was gone. Through a combination of poor investments and unchecked spending, Eker was back at his original net worth … again. It was at that point that Eker began developing his theories about people's mental and emotional relationship to money. He realized that his "inner-money thermostat" was set for a specific amount of financial success, and that everyone else had a financial set point too. His most profound discovery was that this money blueprint could be changed. Using the principles and practices found in his book, Secrets of the Millionaire Mind, Eker reset his own blueprint to not only create success, but to keep it and grow it, and become a multi-millionaire. During his years of struggle, Eker vowed that should he ever get rich, he would help others do the same. He has kept his promise. He has already touched the lives of over 1.5 million people, helping them move closer to their goal of true financial freedom.
