Web 3D Games Setting Up a Timer on the Right Hand Side of the Screen Using Blend4web & JavaScript

06:01
This tutorial shows how to setup a timer that can used in 3D Internet games. The example is a very simple game made using Blender. The timer uses a JavaScript method setInterval() and the game logic is implemented using the Blend4web API (application programming interface). Because the 3D scene loads in a web browser you can also use JavaScript to control CSS box model elements that will overlay the scene. In this tutorial, two CSS container boxes are used to place the score on the left and the time on the right. The files used in the tutorial can be downloaded from my website - http://blender.freemovies.co.uk/paintball-games/ Download blend4web from - https://www.blend4web.com/en/
How to Make HTML5 Games for iPhone

02:17
Can you explain how to make HTML5 games for iPhone? One of the first things to know is that you cannot make games with Adobe Flash on the iPhone, it doesn’t work. I know Adobe Flash plug-ins do not work on most mobile devices. It doesn’t work on Apple devices at all. And Flash has trouble working on a lot of mobile devices. That’s why HTML5 got rid of it for audiovisual files. How do you make a game, though? You can use JavaScript to create games. However, programming in JavaScript is a little complicated. The fact that it can be used to create web pages and games is answer enough of a start. When you want to run JavaScript in an HTML page, you just use the script tag. Will the script tag reference a particular JavaScript file? Yes, when you reference the script by name like myscript.js, followed by a /script tag. That’s like the end of a parenthesis for calling out a variable. Yeah, you’ll use script in the parenthesis to reference the script you want to run. Or put in between those tags the JavaScript you want to run. Can HTML understand JavaScript code? Yes, it reads everything between the script tags as JavaScript. And one advantage of HTML5 is that it got rid of the text slash javascript you had to include aside from the script tags. I heard HTML5 made tags simpler. I’m glad they made something simpler, since it made HTML modules and CSS and other aspects much more complicated. JavaScript is already used for games, and HTML is standard. I can create games with that combination. And the beauty of the HTML callouts of the script is that you can update the script without having to rewrite the web page. As long as the game runs on any device, sure. It is still your responsibility to make sure the game runs at all.

Larry Wall: 5 Programming Languages Everyone Should Know

06:13
Don't miss new Big Think videos! Subscribe by clicking here: http://goo.gl/CPTsV5 Java is "heavyweight, verbose, and everyone loves to hate it," but Wall still thinks you should know it. Question: What are the five programming languages everyone, even non-programmers, should know about and why? Larry Wall:  Oh, boy, that's a really tough question.  It's kind of like asking what are the five countries you should know about if you're not interested in geology, or geography, or politics, and the answer varies depending on what your actual interests are, or what are the five companies you should know.  And the answer changes over time, too.  Back when I was getting started, lo these many decades ago, the answers would've been Fortran, Cobalt, Basic, Lisp, and maybe APL, and those were very formative languages back then and people learned a lot from those, but these days, it might be more important for you to know JavaScript, even if the only reason you know that is that you know whether or not to click the "enable JavaScript" button in your browser.  But JavaScript is a nice, lightweight, object-oriented language and that's why it can fit in a browser and do these things such as run little programs that help you input your data and then send it off to a web server somewhere. There are heavier-weight object-oriented languages and the elephant in the room is sort of Java, you can't really make a list of modern languages without talking about it.  Java is sort of the Cobalt of the 21st century, I think. It's kind of heavyweight, verbose, and everyone loves to hate it, though not everyone will admit that.  But managers kind of like it because it looks like you're getting a lot done, you know, if 100 lines of Java code accomplish a task, then it looks like you've written 100 lines, even though in a different language, it might only take 5 lines.  You know, it's like, you know, you can eat a 1-pound steak or you can eat, you know, 100 pounds of shoe leather and you feel a greater sense of accomplishment after the shoe leather, but, you know, maybe they're some downsides. But it also, because it is sort of considered an industrial language and programmers are sort of interchangeable parts, managers like it for that reason, and for that reason, a lot of Java jobs have been outsourced from the United States. Oh, what other languages?  I think going in a different direction, coming more from academia, we have a language like Haskell, which we call a functional programming language. That means function in a mathematical sense, not in the sense the other languages are dysfunctional.  But a function mathematically has an input and an output and it maps to, you know, with a great deal of mathematical certainty what those are.  Haskell is one of those languages that mathematician-type-minded people love; it's sort of a language for geniuses, by geniuses.  So you should probably know about it, if only to be able to say, "Well, is this kind of like Haskell?"  And if so, then you know you have to hire some really smart people to program in it.  Haskell is sort of a modern kind of Lisp in that sense. What else?  Well, we can't leave off modern languages without talking about C.  The C language, that's just spelled with the letter C, is actually about 40 years old, but people have tried to replace C with other languages that are like it and have by and large not succeeded because C is a very minimalistic language and very close to the metal, as we say, on a machine, and lets you get down and do very fine grain stuff, very efficiently, but it's a lot of hard work.  But once you've done that work, you can run it pretty much everywhere.  So almost all the other languages that you see, Java, Perl, whatever, actually if you look down underneath, they're actually implemented in C, or in a closely related language.  So that continues to be a very fundamental language, if only because everyone is trying to reinvent it and not succeeding in doing so. And finally, for a fifth language, well, you'd probably want to pick one of the scripting languages.  There's several to choose from, there's Python, there's Ruby, but of course, I am prejudiced in favor of Perl, because I think it has the liveliest community and because we have intentionally been redesigning it lately to leapfrog all the other languages. For the last number of years, we've been redesigning it to out all the warts that we've noticed over time.  And we figured it was just our one chance to break backward compatibility, break the things that need breaking, keep all the things that make Perl, Perl, keep it a joy to use, and with this redesign, make it a language that will be able to be useful and enjoyable for decades.  And so I'd recommend Perl, but I'm known to be prejudiced in the matter.

Simple 3D Bat & Ball Game that Plays in a Web Browser Part 3 Complex Code Version & Sound Effects

08:53
This is the third tutorial in a series on making a bat and ball game. The second tutorial showed how to make simple bat and ball game. This tutorial shows how to make a game using the same 3D scene but with more complicated game logic. It also shows how to add sound effects. In this version the interval between new balls/spheres gets less and less, making the game harder as time goes on. Using code to make games gives great flexibility, the choices you can make in the design are endless. Some designs are easier to code than others, a complex design does not necessarily mean a game will be more fun to play. In the first bat and ball game the objective was to make a game with the minimum amount of code, in this tutorial, the objective was to make the game more interesting to play, even though it meant more code and more complex code. In the original design, spheres drop onto the bat, duplicate spheres were made every two seconds. To make the new game more challenging, the interval between making duplicates is made shorter and shorter. To do this a programming method called recursion is used. The tutorial explains the JavaScript code used for setting up the recursion. To play a sound effect when a ball hits a bat, a collision sensor is used. The tutorial explains the JavaScript code used for setting up a collision sensor and playing a sound effect when it detects a collision. The files used in the tutorial can be downloaded from my website - http://blender.freemovies.co.uk/bat-and-ball-games/ Download blend4web from - https://www.blend4web.com/en/

JavaScript Tutorial for Beginners with Examples: Java-Script is a dynamic programming language that can be used to write websites, web apps, and even HTML5 games. Contrary to what non-programmers might tell you, JavaScript has nothing to do with, and is very different from the Java language. Most browsers today have very powerful JavaScript engines that can execute your code very fast and efficiently. Some of the more used virtual machines include Google's V8, Mozilla's Rhino, SpiderMonkey, and Microsoft's Chakra, which powers Internet Explorer 9. Google Closure Tools - Nintendo Game Development

11:09
You can write 2D games for the Nintendo Wii U using their Web Framework with whatever tools you like. As long as your codebase ends up being valid WebKit HTML5 and JavaScript, your game will run and play just fine. However, in order to be more efficient and agile both in terms of development, testing, debugging, and compiling my games, I'll be using Google Closure tools in my projects, including this JavaScript gaming tutorial series. The main components of Google Closure Tools are: 1. Templating system 2. The compiler 3. General purpose JavaScript library Copyright (c) 2013 Rodrigo Silveira http://www.easylearntutorial.com

JavaScript HTML Game Development Tutorial 9 - Multiple Spritesheet Animation

53:41
Download source code for tutorial series here: http://www.tigrisgames.com/src JavaScript game engine aka HTML5 game engine tutorial series by Dev Tigris (#indiedev #gamedev tutorial channel). This tutorial covers creating single sprite sheet object to be used by multiple or the same instance of the Sprite object. This provides tremendous flexibility. In order to accomplish that we will overload our JavaScript drawing function called "draw" from previous tutorial, which will enable us to call it using different types of parameters. This tutorial adds two new JavaScript components (animation.js and controls.js) to our existing RPG game engine base code. If you have been following the series so far, you should know everything up to this point, but if not let me know by leaving a comment and I'll try to answer. This is the most elegant way I found to deploy this type of functionality. In particular, where a single sprite object can be derived directly from a spritesheet.png file, or from a separate Spritesheet (sprite sheet) object, that is already loaded up with a PNG image as well. The main Sprite object now automatically draws the distinction and calling the draw method will choose the image supplied by either the PNG file or a Spritesheet object. Of course this is all hidden away from the JavaScript interface implementation of this function, so that we simply focus on drawing sprites on the screen by using Sprite.draw(x, y) method. We'll overload this function to fake multiple definitions, similar to C++ function overloading. In order to imitate function overloading in JavaScript, we'll simply check for the type of the arguments passed. If we encounter an animation sequence passed as an array, into a special parameter called "various", then a different thread will be executed within the same function.

Why Do Games Cost $60? Why Hasn't The Price of Video Games Changed?

06:08
Why hasn't the price of video games changed? Why don't the prices ever seem to increase for new games even the game development of indie and triple A (AAA) game has gone up so much? Do we now live in the world of microtransactions where games like Fortnite Battle Royale are offered free but make millions of dollars in selling cosmetic things? Should games for PC be costing the same as games for Xbox and PS4? Will the price shift to match more games without campaigns like PUBG? Game Development for Beginners

02:53
I need to know about game development for beginners. I suggest Khan Academy. I’ve heard of the website by parents relying on it to explain matrix math for their fourth graders’ common core math homework. What does that have to do with game development? Reading, writing and math now includes coding as the modern essentials for the real world. So Khan Academy has lessons on HTML5 and JavaScript. I consider knowing what they are more of a vocabulary lesson than game development lesson. The site teaches the basics of HTML and JS, moving up to creating animations in JavaScript and basic game development. OK, I get it. If they can teach elementary school kids math, I should be able to learn the basics of game development from them. If you do not want to learn coding, you can try game development engines like Stencyl or GameMaker to make games without coding. That may let me make an app to say I’ve made an app, but it is not taken seriously if I want an actual job making games. You could try the Pygame dot org site, which focuses on game development in Python. Python has the added benefit of being used to make serious web apps too. Or at least being known by a lot of hiring managers when you put it on your resume. I do not know though, if I want to invest in Python. If you do not know what language you want to work in, go to GameDevelopment dot TutsPlus dot com. I’ve heard of TutsPlus dot com as a site that has tutorials on software programming. The game development section has articles and tutorials on game development, game monetizing, shaders, game resource management and a lot of other things you may not learn while learning a programming language. Monetizing it is certainly valuable information. Another free resource is GameDev dot net. They have articles on shaders, asset managers, the best graphics software, forums for asking the experts questions and instructions on using things like Adobe Flash to make games. I thought Adobe Flash was going away. Theoretically, Adobe Flash is no longer supported, but in reality, there are a lot of pop up multimedia ads and 2D games made in it, plus a lot of free tutorials from Youtube to other sites on how to make games in it. I cannot think of a faster way to make myself obsolete. If you’re an Apple fanatic, I’d say to start with Developer dot Apple dot com slash game-center for their resources on developing games for the iOS. I’d have to start by getting an Apple device first. So go to Developers dot Google dot com slash games to get the resources to develop games for Android.
