A Video Game That Teaches You How To Code

03:44
"Everybody in this country should learn how to program a computer because it teaches you how to think,” Steve Jobs said in 1995. But for a beginner, learning to code can be intimidating. Enter CodeSpells. UC San Diego's Sarah Guthals has developed this video game to teach people how to code. The story line is simple: you’re a wizard that uses spells (i.e. code) to navigate through the world, fight off foes, and solve problems. While experienced coders can delve deep into the programming to create some truly devastating spells, newbies can easily experiment with the simple drag-and-drop coding interface. The research highlighted in this video has been supported in part by the National Science Foundation I-Corps grant. http://codespells.org — To get updates and information about CodeSpells http://learntomod.com — A similar software developed by us to teach coding through Minecraft http://thoughtstem.com — Getting CS education into your classroom/school FEATURING: Sarah Guthals, alum of the Jacobs School of Engineering at UC San Diego --- Why Science Needs Art: https://youtu.be/-junNCPl3Zs Subscribe! http://bit.ly/1fUWHyY Fig. 1 explores new ideas and research out of the University of California — ranging from science, technology, art and humanities. Web 3D Games Setting Up a Timer on the Right Hand Side of the Screen Using Blend4web & JavaScript

06:01
This tutorial shows how to setup a timer that can used in 3D Internet games. The example is a very simple game made using Blender. The timer uses a JavaScript method setInterval() and the game logic is implemented using the Blend4web API (application programming interface). Because the 3D scene loads in a web browser you can also use JavaScript to control CSS box model elements that will overlay the scene. In this tutorial, two CSS container boxes are used to place the score on the left and the time on the right. The files used in the tutorial can be downloaded from my website - http://blender.freemovies.co.uk/paintball-games/ Download blend4web from - https://www.blend4web.com/en/

What is JavaScript - JavaScript Tutorial for Beginners

08:39
JavaScript Tutorial for Beginners with Examples: Java-Script is a dynamic programming language that can be used to write websites, web apps, and even HTML5 games. Contrary to what non-programmers might tell you, JavaScript has nothing to do with, and is very different from the Java language. Most browsers today have very powerful JavaScript engines that can execute your code very fast and efficiently. Some of the more used virtual machines include Google's V8, Mozilla's Rhino, SpiderMonkey, and Microsoft's Chakra, which powers Internet Explorer 9. Programming Challenge: Tic Tac Toe Tutorial 4: Javascript Algorithm 1

This tutorial goes over the algorithm to check if a player has won the game of tic tac toe. Due to the nature of the project, I just used a brute force algorithm to check every possibility. I could have used some short cuts, such as not checking a row, column, or diagonal that the last click didn't belong to, but since the game is so, so simple, it didn't hurt to check everything possible. ---------------------------------- Complete Source Code ---------------------------------- The complete source code for the computer programming challenge: tic tac toe edition is found at https://github.com/formigone/tictactoe-challenge -------------------------------- Other links of interest -------------------------------- -- http://www.easylearntutorial.com Our official websites. Component-base games - Nintendo Game Development

28:59
Let's begin developing our game for the Nintendo Wii U console system. Since the Nintendo Web Framework is all about developing in straight HTML5 and JavaScript for a WebKit environment, we'll write the entire game using Google Chrome to test and iterate. Once we have the game complete, and you have an indie game developer or studio license with Nintendo, we'll just need to compile the final code base so it can be sent to Nintendo. From there, the games will be available from the eStore either for free, or at some cost if you would like to make money from Nintendo games you program. Component based game development is a way to write games in a very plug-and-play manner. Instead of gaming a very thick base class that everything in the game inherits from, and a super [poorly designed] object-oriented beast that does everything, we'll write very small and loose modules (components) that the various game entities can use freely. The idea is that a game entity object represents something within the game world, such as a player (the hero) or an enemy. Entities are composed of zero or more components, and each component is designed to do one thing, and one thing only. For example, an entity object can contain a render component that renders it to the screen, a movement component so we can move the entity around the game world, and a physics component so the entity follows the physics laws (logic) imposed by the component. The key point about components is that entities should be able to add and remove components at run time (as opposed to at compile time). This approach makes code easier to write, maintain, and test, since a component is isolated from everything else in the system.

Feeling overwhelmed yet before you even began your journey as a software developer? If so, good! The point of this video is to discuss all of that in a simple way and clarify common misconceptions among beginning coders when they are about to start. We discuss different programming languages and suggest which language you should perhaps start off with first. You can always switch over later! The important thing is to understand the concepts in a computer programming language especially as a beginner. Do not try to deal with both conceptual difficulty and syntactical difficulty at the same time. Imagine if you never knew any human language and you tried to start off by learning Japanese as an adult, that would be really tough. Start simple, learn the concepts, then transition to another language. We will talk about which languages to avoid as a beginner! ★☆★ MY PROJECT AGILE DIRECTIONS: ★☆★ https://goo.gl/rYFyR8 I worked on this project with my friend. Never knew ANY Javascript but picked it up within one day and built this whole thing together with my friend in about 1-2 days. The idea behind the app is to be able to download commonly visited locations on an excel sheet and print them so when your GPS dies on you... You are still good to go. I did a lot of private chess lessons and I depended on my GPS for the job. However, sometimes it died on me in very critical situations and that almost got me fired from my job. This app was made for people who can use this in order to not have to rely on GPS solely to get to their destination. ------------------------------------ Clever Programmer Website ► http://cleverprogrammer.com Facebook ► http://cleverprogrammer.to/facebook Twitter ► http://cleverprogrammer.to/twitter Instagram ► http://cleverprogrammer.to/instagram YouTube ► https://www.youtube.com/c/CleverProgrammer Snapchat ► Rafeh1 ... Animated Sliding Image Gallery with jQuery and Javascript Part 2

11:06
In this short video series we make from start to finish a animated sliding image gallery using HTML,CSS,jQuery, Javascript and a little PHP. You dont need to know any server side programming for this tutorial, I simply used it to loop through all of the images in one folder. This could be hard coded with just HTML. Enjoy watching the videos, it less than 45 minutes in length and by the end of the 3 videos you should have a better understanding of how to make a sliding image gallery. This gallery can be extended so much further, my aim was just to give you enough knowledge of how to do it, so as you can then extend it yourself.

Barfight Gameplay - WebGL

03:26
Barfight was the first to be made for the web-based game library that my father and I started, called TuBaGames.net which stands for (Tu)rn (Ba)sed Games. It was meant to be a lobby/chat room for players who came to the site to play other games. They could play poker using money they won in the other games (usually turn based strategy games), or even start fist fights and break some bottles! We thought that this environment is exactly what players would enjoy before and after playing games competitively or cooperatively. It was written by my father in JavaScript and used WebSockets and WebGL. The art was created by myself using Blender3d and GIMP. There were many challenges, including fighting frame-rate on lower-end devices and limitations on the complexity and quality of the models and textures.

Machine Learning for Flappy Bird using Neural Network & Genetic Algorithm

03:04
Read the complete tutorial about how to implement a machine learning algorithm for the Flappy Bird video game here: http://www.askforgametask.com/tutorial/machine-learning-algorithm-flappy-bird This video shows a creation of an artificial intelligence controller for the Flappy Bird game using neural networks and a genetic algorithm. The program is written in HTML5 using Phaser framework (http://phaser.io/). There is also used Synaptic Neural Network library (https://synaptic.juancazala.com/) to implement entire artificial neural network instead of making a new one from the scratch. Download source code here: https://github.com/ssusnic/Machine-Learning-Flappy-Bird ----------------------------------------------------------------- According to Arthur Samuel, machine learning is the science of getting computers to act without being explicitly programmed. It is a fine tuning process of learning that incrementally improves an initial random system. The form of machine learning implemented in this program uses a genetic algorithm to train artificial neural networks. The birds are learning how to flap optimally in order to fly safely through barriers as long as possible. The main concept is based on these 3 steps: 1. creating the initial population of 10 birds randomly 2. learning as the game is being played 3. applying natural evolution to form the next improved population ----------------------------------------------------------------- To play the game, each bird has its own neural network consisted of the next 3 layers: 1. an input layer with 2 neurons representing what a bird sees: - horizontal distance to the closest gap - height difference to the closest gap 2. a hidden layer with 6 neurons 3. an output layer with 1 neuron to perform flap if its value is greater than 0.5 ----------------------------------------------------------------- To measure the quality of birds and select the best ones, for each bird is calculated its fitness function in this way: - reward a bird by its total traveled distance - penalize a bird by its current distance to the closest gap When the entire population is dead, the fittest four birds are selected to breed a new population by using genetic algorithm operators: selection, crossover and mutation. ----------------------------------------------------------------- Visit us: http://www.askforgametask.com Like us: https://www.facebook.com/askforgametask Follow us: https://twitter.com/ssusnic Music: "Bedtime Tune" by Jay Man http://www.ourmusicbox.com

"Making Games for 1920s Hardware" by Mike Lazer-Walker

32:22
"Hello, Operator!" is a game played on a vintage Western Electric telephone switchboard from 1927. Players sit down at the physical switchboard and learn how to use it as they actually would have in the 1920s. Under the hood, the game is a blend of old and new technology, with a JavaScript-based game engine running on a modern computer wired directly to 90-year-old electronics. This talk will dive into the development and design process of "Hello, Operator!". As someone used to working purely in software, how do you approach sitting down with 90-year-old hardware and actually figuring out what's going on? How do you make sense of something that has no documentation or source code, where "legacy code" and "tech debt" mean not a pile of spaghetti code but a literal tangle of wires, and the equivalent of "console.log" is a multimeter? More than just dealing with hardware, making a fun game is all about having a tight feedback loop between prototyping and putting things in front of actual users. That sort of iterative design is tricky when it involves 200 pounds of vintage hardware! We'll talk about the cross-platform game engine powering "Hello, Operator" that can run anywhere from the physical hardware to a Unix CLI to an iPad with a custom touch-based interface, and engineering considerations and design patterns that can allow you to seamlessly transition between prototyping in code and in silicon. Google Closure Tools - Nintendo Game Development

11:09
You can write 2D games for the Nintendo Wii U using their Web Framework with whatever tools you like. As long as your codebase ends up being valid WebKit HTML5 and JavaScript, your game will run and play just fine. However, in order to be more efficient and agile both in terms of development, testing, debugging, and compiling my games, I'll be using Google Closure tools in my projects, including this JavaScript gaming tutorial series. Introduction to Programming : Computer: Computer is an electronic device; it takes data as an input, processes it and gives information as an output. It is used to solve real world problems quickly and efficiently. Computer has no self intelligence. We need to tell computer what to do step by step in a specific order. Program: a set of instructions/commands written in a specific order. Programming: a process of writing programs. a way of telling a computer what to do To help programmers to communicate with machines over the years many programming languages have been developed. Programming Language: a way of communication between programmers and machines Ex: Types of Programming Languages: LLPL (MLPL, ALPL), HLPL (GPPL, SPPL) We can compare programming languages with human languages! Human Language: is a way of communication between humans Ex: English, Hindi, Japanese, etc. How we learn any language: Grammar of a language: (Syntax and Semantics) Character set: Alphabets, digits, special symbols Word: meaningful, group of characters Sentence: meaningful, group of words Paragraph / Lessons: meaningful, group of sentences Book: meaningful, group of lessons. Library: collection of books. Comparison: Human languages Vs. Programming Challenge: Tic Tac Toe Tutorial 3: Javascript Structure & Classes

16:01
This is the second part of my coding tutorial where I walk through the source code and explain how I programmed my tic tac toe game in 33 minutes. This tutorial covers the Javascript used to provide the logic of the game. We first create a reference to all the DOM objects (type buttons), create a few flag variables to keep track of the game state, then loop through the array of buttons, and register an event listener for each. Inside the event handler that captures a click event for each button, we perform the operations of our main game loop. This involves checking for a win, a draw, or whether the game just continues to play. We then toggle the current player's turn. Here we talk about different ways to do this, which includes using if() statements (conditionals), using the modulus (mod) operator, or doing a boolean XOR operation. Finally, we implement the function that checks for invalid moves (checking a box already checked). In the next tutorial, we implement the remaining functions and finish up this awesome Javascript game.
