Complete install of a shower stall, start to finish, studs to tile. Including information on installing Schluter shower system, glass mosaic ceiling tile, mud base and waterproofing, large format tile on the walls and main floor including an electric floor heating system by Schlute Ditra Heat, river rock on the shower floor and a stone glass mix mosaic tile on the tub accent wall
Glass tile requires the use of a high polymer content thinset to insure that the tile will actually stick to the substrate, but this goes against Schluters recommendation to use an unmodified thinset to install tile on its products.
Steps include installing the Schluter bonding flange drain, wire lath tar paper, mud base and Schluter kerdi Membrane and Kerdi band to make the whole thing waterproof.
The base can be installed with a bed of deck mud that can be shaped to any size and shape. Once the mud has set, the entire shower floor is waterproofed by installing kerdi membrane and tying it to the shower walls and Curb.
River rock is a popular type of tile used for shower floors; they are also called pebble floors. This is a sliced or shaved river rock, which means that the surface of the shower floor will be flat, other types of river rock are rounded and result in a bumpy floor.
When installing tiles which are this large it is important to use a thinset that is suitable for a large format tile.
Ditra Heat is a floor warming system made by Schluter, it is a three component system consisting of the Ditra Mat, the cable system and the thermostat, it comes in both 120, and 240 volt. The Ditra mat for the Ditra heat is configured in such a way that the heat wire can be easily inserted and routed through the mat to heat the desired areas, in this case the whole floor was heated, but can also be used to heat different zones. Large format porcelain tile installed start to finish. T-Lock was used as a lippage system, also known as a leveling system to install the tile to reduce or eliminate lippage. When installing tile on Schluter System Products, an unmodified thinset is used, this is required by schluter to maintain the warranty, Large format tile also should be installed with a larger sized notched trowel to help achieve the recommended coverage and transfer of thenset to the tile, back buttering the tile is also a good practice to use. I also give some usful information about grouting, these days with the many different types of grouts available, it is important to read the direction of the grout you intend to use to understand the specific steps for that grout.
The T-Lock leveling System, is a tile leveling system designed for the installation of all kinds of tiles from 12”x12” and larger. This system is a wedge type system designed to be used without the aid of any tools; however a pliers tightening tool can be used for those that prefer to. The base plates come with automatic spacers built-in for different size grout widths, 1/32”, 1/16” and 1/8”. The bases are inserted around the corners of a tile and then the wedge is slid in to bring the tiles into plain. Once the tile has set the wedges can be removed with a rubber mallet hitting the bases in the direction of the grout lines, on floor they can simple be kicked with a foot if you like. The wedges are reusable and should be collected for use in future tile installations. All tile installed by Sal DiBlasi, Elite-tile Company, in the Boston North Shore area.
