Can computer games make learning grammar fun?

01:37
Education research: the big questions Learning grammar is one of the hardest parts of learning a foreign language. But it’s really important. Grammar helps language learners express and understand meaning in a sentence. Dr Rowena Kasprowicz, Lecturer in Second Language Education at the University of Reading’s Institute of Education, describes how a computer game can help young learners focus on learning grammar. The game was developed as part of an education research project by Dr Rowena Kasprowicz, Professor Emma Marsden and the Digital Creativity Labs (University of York). This is the first of a series of films about research at Reading’s Institute of Education, to answer big questions in education research. The Best Way To Teach English Grammar Teaching English The Fun Way

08:20
I created this game style of teaching about 10 years ago. I believe it is the best way to teach grammar, not only because it makes learning grammar fun, but also because it is a holistic method. The class is inherently student centered. Students are active and never stay in their seats for the entire class. The basic structure of the game involves two students, head to head, writing a sentence on the board. The sentence includes the correct answer. For example, the assignment might involve choosing the correct form of the verb, and, or identifying the object of the verb. Or they may have to change the voice of a verb, and write the new sentence. Students must remain in their seats until the teacher gives the signal. Then students race to the board and write the sentence, or the answer as fast as they can. They then slam the marker on the desk at the front. The student who slams his or her marker down first wins if the answer is legible, without spelling mistakes, and correct grammatically. The winning student earns a point for their team. The class is usually divided into two teams, but this can vary. The team that has the most points at the end of class wins the game and each student gets a sticker. Many variations can be used for variety and to challenge students in different ways. A relay race is another commonly utilized form of the game. After the signal, the first student writes their answer on the board and then passes the marker to the next student and so on until all the answers are on the board. Again the same rules are applied to determine who wins the point, or points depending on the prearranged criteria. The team that has the most points at the end of class wins the game and each student gets a sticker. The stickers are quite motivating. The students really enjoy receiving stickers every day. One of the most important strategies incorporated in The Game method is that if neither student writes the correct answer on the board I simply say that no one is correct. Then the thinking begins. Students try to solve the problem and help each other. All students get involved in this process. Sometimes the solution ends up being quite complicated, like a math problem, or a puzzle. The students say they really enjoy trying to solve these grammar problems. So students self-correct and peer correct. Even teacher intervention begins with questions and clues. It is easier to recognize common errors which allows for immediate teachable moments for the teacher to remind, or teach, or reinforce. So it’s constant assessment and improvement. The students do the learning themselves and together.
