Pass It - A Vocabulary Review that uses Flashcards! - Easy ESL Games

03:01
In this video, Steve demonstrates a super easy way to review vocabulary while using flashcards. The set up is simple. Make a circle, read the word on a flash card out loud and pass it to the student next to you so they can do the same. When the card makes it all the way around the circle, switch vocabulary targets and repeat. After your students master the basic version of the game, then make it increasingly difficult by throwing in all of the different variations Steve uses in the video. Have you played "Pass It" in your classroom? Are there any variations we're leaving out? Please let us know in the comment section so that we can share it with other teachers Thanks - Kevin Make sure to find all of our materials on Teachers Pay Teachers: https://www.teacherspayteachers.com/Store/Easy-Esl-Games For classroom games please check out our website: http://www.easyeslgames.com We made an album specifically designed for use in ESL/EFL classrooms. A quick 4-minute description of how to play "Hot Seat" and a list of possible phrases to use! This game is great for a one-hour long lesson; it can also be used to teach Spanish and French, for example, to non-native speakers. To be honest it can be used to teach any language. My specialty is teaching using games. Some people underestimate the power of learning through fun; however, I embrace it to keep my students interested. The Teachers' Room: Fun collocation activities

04:00
Collocations are commonly put together pairings of words. They can be weakly or strongly related. Learning them will greatly enhance your students' use of vocabulary and speaking skills. So here are a few fun and memorable activities you can use to practise them. Collocation race The easiest way to practise collocations is to have students sort them into columns on the board. Split the board into columns with half a collocation as a heading. Then call out, hand out or provide the other half and have students put them in the right columns. To make this competitive, create two teams and have a race. Collocation place Divide your teaching space into several areas and assign one half of a collocation to each area. Then call out the other half. Students must move to the space which represents the matching collocation pair. Once they get there, have them make a sentence using the collocation. Collocation aim Great for young learners, or just doing something a bit different! Get the students to screw up paper into balls. Draw targets on the board and assign them a collocation half. Then call out the other half and have students throw their balls at the correct target. Or, if you have a class that gets on well, you can assign students as targets for a bit of fun. Collocation mingle Print collocations on cards – half of the pair on one card and the other half on another. Distribute these cards to students and have them mingle with each other to try and find their collocation partner. To make things a bit more challenging, use one or two collocations that could have more than one possible pairing. Collocation gap fill For higher level students, or those doing academic work. Take an authentic text, find relevant collocations and blank out one half of each collocation pair. Then give the students the text and ask them to work together to complete it using whatever word they think is correct. My favourite ESL class game

04:22
Rules- Before class prepare a key of what weapons will go in each grid space. Divide the class into teams, each person has 3 lives. Draw a 10x10 grid on the board. Ask students the revision questions, whoever gets the question right can choose a square. Tell the student what the square contains. Gun= take one life point away. Two guns = Take two life points from the same person or one each of 2 people. Bomb= The answer-er loses one life point. Fire= The whole team loses one life point. Heart= Add one life point. The team that still has people alive in the end wins. Change the names of the values if you wish. If enough people press 'like' I will add more games.

2 fun new ways to learn English vocabulary

10:49
Learning a new language is difficult and boring. Every student learns differently, and it's important to find a study method that is right for YOU. I want to put the fun back into studying English with two methods that are fun and which make learning easier and quicker! In this lesson, I will teach you how to make connections between words in order to remember them more easily. I will also reveal my hidden poet talents, so you don't want to miss this one! http://www.engvid.com/2-fun-new-ways-to-learn-english-vocabulary/ TRANSCRIPT Yeah, that was fun. I'm looking forward to hearing that from you later. Hi. James from engVid. In this video what I would like to do is help you work on vocabulary. I want to make it fun, because when things are fun, you work harder and you learn more. And today's lesson, I'm going to teach you two ways to not only just remember vocabulary, but learn how to use vocabulary in a way that we use it, and you will really understand it, and... Heck, it's fun. You're just going to have fun doing it. I'm sure you will. All right? It's a little bit creative. So, let's go to the board. Simple lesson. Here we go. Two ways to have fun with language. Not just language, but vocabulary. Ways that you may not be studying in class, we're going to do here today. The first one I want to talk to you about is fill in the gap. Huh? "A gap" means a space, there's a space between something. So, here's my hands, in between my hands is a gap. Okay? You have a gap between your eyes. One eye, one eye, space. In this case, you see I've got this: "tree __________ chair". Now, fill in the gap doesn't mean just one word. It's a couple of ways you can do this. In this particular game, we're going to take two vocabulary words, "tree", and take another one, "chair", and they're kind of a little obvious to make it easy for you, but what I want you to do is one of two things. The first thing we can do is use x words. What I mean by that is you could say: "I want to use five words, and I want to go from 'tree' to 'chair'." Or: "I want to use three words from 'tree' to 'chair'" or two. Huh? Well, okay. How do I get from "tree"? Okay. "Tree", "cut". You cut the tree down, right? "Lumber". Lumber you make into wood you can use. Let's see. "Carpenter". Find a carpenter. "Craft". "Craft" means make. You're like: "What?" These... All these words... And then I can say: "Furniture". Okay? Okay, furniture. "Chair", so if I have a tree, I cut it down and make it into lumber, I take it to a carpenter, he crafts it into a chair. Five words from A to B. So, one game is tell yourself: "I want to go from five... One word to another word, and I want five words to get there." And you can challenge yourself; maybe go from three words. Right? Or make 10 words. You can use it to describe something. How many words you can use to describe a certain thing. Right? "I have this word, and I want to go to this word. How many words does it take me to get there?" What this does is it teaches you relationship between words, and that also can teach you nouns and verbs, and how they function together. Or, we say "syntax", right? So, start at A, say: "I want to use five words to get there." This is a great word to do with a friend. You can say: "Okay, we're going to do 'tree' and 'chair', you need to do five words that make sense to go from 'tree' to 'chair'", and put a clock on for five minutes. You go, and she goes, you write together and see what words you get. Compare, check them out. "Why did you choose this, and why does this word...? What does this word mean?" Right? So, now, you're not just writing words in a book and saying: "This word means this." You're: "What does it mean? How do I use it? How would other people use it? How would other people think?" Right? Yeah. See? That's fun by yourself or with a friend. Okay, listen, the second way to play this game is: How many words to the answer? What? Well, we can pick up two random words, two, like... I have "chair"... "Tree" and "chair", we could have put "chair" and "moon". Now the game gets a little bit more interesting. Right? "Chair" and "moon". How many words does it get me to go from "chair" to "moon"? Now, you might say: "That's impossible. They have nothing to do with each other." I could say, "Listen, the chair in my living room"-"living room" is a noun-"sits"-which is a verb-"close to the big bay window where I can see the moon at night." How many words did it take me to get from "chair" to "moon"? So, it's playing with words, being creative.

ESL - Vocabulary Game Farmer and the Rabbits

00:59
I made up this game during a class. It is a variation of Hot potato. The idea is that the farmer is after the rabbits in is garden. The students must say a question or phrase and the next student must answer the question before asking a new question and throwing it to another student. A variation I've had to use for large classes and younger students is the student must throw the SOFT ball back to the teacher that way the teacher can make sure everybody gets a chance to play. If they get caught by the farmer/teacher with the hammer I sometimes have them do a song or a dance or something else fun. Another variation that can involve more students being active and not waiting their turn is to have students get in small groups with a small, soft object that will allow them to play with each other while the teacher monitors.
