EFL / ESL Teaching Tip: Simple Future Board Game
Fun and games with the simple future! Noga tells us about a student-centered, entertaining way to have students practice their use of this verb tense!! Hello everyone, my name is Noga Laor and I’m the Academic Director here at Rennert in NYC, and I’d like to share a game with you today that I used to use with my students when I was teaching, and it’s to practice the simple future; the simple future with “will” and the simple future with “be going to.” And the great thing about this activity is that it’s completely student-centered and 100% student generated as well. So, it’s called the simple future board game and here’s how it works: You break the students up into groups of 3 or 4 depending on how large your class is. And you give each student three little pieces of paper- just tiny little pieces of paper, and every student has to write a statement in the simple future on each piece of paper, on each piece of paper that he or she has, about their lives. It could be, it has to be true. It has to be a true statement. It could be a statement in the near future or in the far future. So, for example, “I’m going to have dinner with my family tonight.” Ok, or “I’ll travel to Europe next year,” anything like that. Once the students are done, they take their little pieces of paper, and they create a board game with it. So they put their little pieces of paper on the table in front of them. They mix them up, but they create a board game so it’s like 1-2-3-4, 1-2-3-4, 1-2-3-4. And each group receives a die and some, some placeholders, some markers, let’s say a coin, a penny, a nickel, a dime. So, one person rolls the die- let’s say they get a 5. So they take their marker, and they go to the board game and they count or and they move 5 steps, so 1-2-3-4-5 and they land on the 5th little piece of paper and they pick it up and they read the sentence. If it’s a sentence that they wrote, they have to talk about their, this future plan for at least one minute and their classmates or their group mates can ask them questions. So, for example, if the statement is, “I’m going to have dinner with my family tonight,” they can say, “Yes, I’m going to have dinner with my family tonight, my mother will be there, my father will be there, my sister is coming and she’s bringing her friend. I think we’re going to have chicken and maybe pasta. So they just talk about the future plan for a minute. If they pick up a card that is another student’s sentence, they have to ask that student questions about their future plan. So, “What are you going to have for dinner tonight? Who’s going to be there? Do you have dinner with your family every week?” Things like that. So it really allows the students to practice making statements in the simple future and also asking questions in the simple future. Once they’re finished, that piece of paper gets taken out of the board game, the next person rolls the die, they move their marker however many steps the die tells them to move, and the game continues until all of the little pieces of paper on the board game are gone. So again, this is a really, really nice way to practice, to allow students to practice using the simple future in questions and in statements. And as I said, it’s completely student generated. The game itself is student generated and it’s completely student centered because the students are doing all of the work. It’s a great game. ESL game for 5th Grade Lesson 8 I went Focusing on PAST TENSES Pair-work Activity Key Expressions: How was your weekend/ vacation/ week? It was great/not good/ okay/ fun/ etc What did you do? I (past tense verbs/ activities) This turned out really good with all of my classes. Despite NOT having pictures, my students did pretty well. Most of the kids that were lower leveled were paired up with students that could read & help the other students. Plus, most the key expressions were ingrained in their minds that it was pretty easy for most of the students. If you have younger students, you can create a game with pictures & sentences to help them. Make sure that in your lesson you have showed them the pictures so they have them as a reference. I find that flashcard vocabulary sessions in the beginning of class is very effective, if the pictures are related to the game. Happy Teaching everyone.

Let's go to the board. Because as E says, he wins and you can, too. So, first I'm going to look at is preposition, and I'm going to pick one. Because when we play this game of Xs and Os, you can see the board is here, we're going to play and I'm going to teach you how to use this preposition with these verbs to create phrasal verbs. Now, one of the things we want to do is figure out what "up" means. You don't have to do this. You can just go in... You're on the internet, and you could look up these verbs, and see, you know, the phrasal verb "pull up", what does it mean? "Pick up", "close up", but today I'm going to help you with "up". We actually have a video with phrasal verbs on it, or many videos, where you can go and research and find out what these ones mean and other ones. And I believe I did one that gives you a method for "up", "down", and other phrasal verbs. Go check it out. www.engvid.com. Right? So: "up". "Up" can mean more. Okay? "Increase", "closer", "improve", "finish", or "end". So, when you know that "up" can mean these things, it means when we use these words here, we add "up", it will change the meaning of each word and give it a new meaning with the two words combined. For instance: "pull up". When we pull up it means to get closer, so when an English-speaking person says to you: "Please pull up a chair", it means get a chair and sit close with us. "Pull up" means closer, move closer. "Pick up". "Pick up" has several meanings but I'm not going to go into all of them. I'm going to give you one that you can use now. If you say: "I will pick you up at 4 o'clock or 5", it means I will come to a place you are at, meet you, and we will go together. A lot of times when someone says "pick you up" it means they will either have a taxi or a car, and they will take you, transport you with them. That's why they're picking you up, or they would say: "I would come to your house". "Close up", when you close up a store it means to shut, finish, and you end the work, so you close the door and go home. "We going to close up at about 6 o'clock." We will finish working about 6 o'clock. "Lift up", well, this pen, lift it up. We could say it more, and I should have added "move", right? Because when you lift something up, you take it from a lower position, you put it to a higher position. "Brighten up". "Brighten up" means to go bright, so we go from... Well, let's look here: Purple, this is brightened up. It's not clean, it's not perfect, but it's brighter. Right? So "brighten up" means to give more light. Or it could mean make happier. "He brightened up at the prospect of going out." He got happier. "Hold up" means to make wait. If you're saying: "What's holding up the train?" It means: "Why is the train staying here? Why is it waiting?" "Shot up", it means to go straight up. "The rock got shot up into the sky". "Clean up" means to clean. "Let's clean up the room." Let's clean it up, make it better. In this case, improve the condition of the room. "Take up" means review. […]
